About this property
Adirondacks - Hill Top Bungalow - Keene, NY-Near Lake Placid
Cute, two-bedroom, one-bath, two-story bungalow sits on one-half acre, just up from Main Street in Keene. Situated in the heart of the Adirondack Mountain's high peaks, this home offers beautiful views of Cascade Mountain, and easy access to Lake Placid (11 miles), Whiteface Mountain (nine miles), Keene Valley (five miles), and all of the best hiking trails, fishing, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, and skiing (cross country and downhill) that you might be looking for! The house is furnished with all sorts of little 'getaway amenities' - from a queen-size futon on the outdoor screen porch (for an extra non-winter sleeping spot for two), and a campfire pit (for roasting marshmallows). The house has a well-stocked kitchen for any kind of cooking you would like to do, a bathroom with a claw-foot tub, a Smart TV, and a full-size washer and dryer (to keep you with fresh, dry clothing).

We enjoyed our stay in this sweet, quirky home. Kate has created a lovely welcoming space to relax in and it was right in town and easy walking distance to everything. Close to where we wanted to be. Neighbours are lovely, beautiful views and a great property manager who helped us with check in
centrally located to many outdoor activities. nice to have access to gas, convenience store and garden center with craft beer a quarter mile away. needs some updating but adequately stocked with paper products and soaps. would like to have had a remote for dvd. nice to have wifi while staying to keep up on the weather and plan our days.

Great get away
We had a fantastic time. The bungalow is located in the heart of small town Keene on the main road, but set back far enough to not feel like you are going to get runover by tourists. You are close enough to head to Lake Placid daily if you choose or avoid the mainstream with easy access to numerous trails. The house is small, but perfectly adequate for up to 6 people. The porch is the perfect place to relax and read and the garage is quite handy for storing oversized item (bikes, skis, etc) We would return without hesitation.

We are thrilled to know that you had a fabulous time and would love to have you return. We, too, enjoy these same features, and we are delighted that our attempt to share them with travelers coming to the Adirondacks has been successful! Thank you for your lovely review!
The bungalow was perfect!
It offered easy access to find it, it was clean, had all the amenities you need, walking distance to food, groceries, etc. and a great spot to access all the ADK High Peaks have to offer: climbing, hiking, fishing, etc. Kate was great to work with, very quick to respond and super helpful. I’ll definitely be back.
I wish we had stayed longer. I didn't want to leave. The place has everything you will need and more. Wait til you meet the neighbors, If you haven't dreamed of moving to the mountains... You will after seeing how happy they are 🙂 We even met the caretaker, very nice gentleman. When you come to stay definitely have the fire at night, the stars alone make it worth it. Don't forget the s'mores, but if you do there's a Stewart's store within walking distance that has literally anything you want. We will absolutely be back next year, hopefully sooner. Thank you 😊
Kate is very responsive and quickly cleared up an issue with the VRBO app billing. Her place is a great mountain getaway, plenty of space, very close to trailheads and walking to a great coffee/food shop and restaurant, but less close to lake placid itself for groceries and more food options. Older house but plenty of fans are provided and despite being 90+ some days was still plenty comfortable. Wifi was excellent, no problem teleworking with video conferencing. Small kitchen but much better than average cookware and cutlery, new washing machine and dryer were great. Kate's photography and artwork throughout the house are also beautiful!
We were 4 women who wanted a cozy house where we could cook, eat and sleep for a couple of nights while we had a hiking adventure in the mountains. And it was just the ticket. Simple, rustic, but very comfortable. Host was most gracious and responsive. Would absolutely go back
Very convenient to down town Keene, hiking, swimming, biking. Very well appointed. Spacious 2 car garage. Super friendly and helpful neighbors. Host really helpful, available and friendly. Price was right. Old and funky. Old two prong outlets and not enough of them. Second bedroom cramped with cheap metal table and shelves for modem and printer. Too small for a bureau. Most windows throughout the house had broken sashes that had to be held up with dowels. Hook and eye locking system for front porch of house. Very difficult to work locks on the screen doors to house. No shelf space in bathroom to put toiletries. Only one rack for a towel. Words for house need to be updated for Wi-fi access(wrong house name and password) and where to put compost. The neighbors let us use theirs because if you put it behind the garage, neighbors dog and other animals get to it. Overall I’d say if you don’t mind old and quirky, the price was right for what you get!
A very sweet cottage perfect for our family for a multi week stay with our two kids and cat. Kate provided pretty much everything you would need to be comfortable- extra blankets, ample cooking equipment, soaps and shampoos, laundry detergent. The cottage was comfortable with a great sleeping porch with futon and hammock. Great location in Keene, easy to walk to several stores and Stewarts, easy to get to hiking trails and Keene Valley. We loved the neighbors. Loved the beautiful garden and expansive lawn with wild flowers, set back from the road. Internet connection was good for working from home. We didn't want to leave!
We have stayed at Hill Top several times. This was our first visit during the fall. What a lovely spot, with a gorgeous view! The owner, Kate, is very responsive, and the house is cozy and charming. We will be back!
As always this year was great. That's 4 years in a row without issues. Great location for hiking the high peaks. Many swimming holes nearby also. Short drive to Lake Placid if you want to head that way for a day. If you absolutely rely on internet it's not very fast and can be frustrating but I did eventually get everything that I needed done. Relaxing place to stay with all the necesseties we need.
The Hill Top Bungalow has been the perfect getaway for us for years. We will keep coming back to enjoy the mountains and relax with all the comfort and necessities of home.
My second extended stay at the HTB was even better than my first. Charming house, delightful neighbors, beautiful view, and a great location in the heart of the High Peaks.
My husband and I stayed here with our two dogs for a whole week and loved absolutely everything about it! The house is a small, 1930s bungalow and is in great shape and immaculately clean. The porch was my favorite part and we spent most of our time out there as it has a beautiful view. We slept out on the porch most nights and the futon is decently comfortable but perhaps not the best. The bed in the main bedroom upstairs however is lovely. Super comfortable with plenty of pillows to use in the closet.
I will warn you that the bathtub is an awesome claw foot tub, which is great for baths, but a little cramped for showering. It's also a bit of a step up, and over when getting in and out. I'm 5'9" and felt like a giant as I was only a few inches away from the ceiling.
The town itself is small but the house is perfectly located. The Stewarts Gas station is across the street, there is a beer and garden center next to that, the Cedar Run Market is just down the road, and Lake Placid is 20 minutes further down route 73. We were able to access plenty of beautiful hikes and restaurants and have a wonderful time.
It should also be noted that the property managers, Teri and Larry are wonderful. They are friendly and helpful and lent us their camp grill because the house's grill had recently been removed and we were not aware. I also sprained my ankle on the first day and Teri brought me an ace bandage down from her personal supply in case I needed it, along with a bag of freshly picked lettuce from their garden.
The neighbors right next to the house, Amy and Peter are very kind as well. They are friendly but also respect your privacy. (Hopefully they felt the same way about us.)
If you are traveling with dogs, be sure to clear it with Kate the owner first, and be aware that there are a lot of dogs (the ones we met were friendly) in the neighborhood, a few of them roam around freely. We have a leash reactive dog, so we just had to be on the lookout when we walked him.
Overall, we had a fabulous experience and plan to return.

Perfect Location
The bungalow is quiet, and has everything you could need. The location is great for easy access to the high peaks and Lake Placid. My third year renting here and I plan on staying a fourth.

comfy bungalow warm and inviting
This little gem of a bungalow was perfect for our getaway! My husband and I and our dog Skye stayed at Hill Top in early October. Located in the heart of the Adirondacks, we were centrally located to all the mountains had to offer. Owner Kate had provided us with plenty of information pre-check in and upon our arrival ensured everything was clean and well stocked, with many unexpected amenities provided. Kate's beautiful photography, local maps and brochures were abundant and available for reference, and little notes were thoughtfully placed throughout the premises providing helpful information ranging from operation of wifi and TV to use of kitchen equipment. We had the pleasure of meeting the neighbors and their friendly dogs - really nice people who were happy to answer questions or assist with anything. We particularly enjoyed sitting in the screened in front porch looking out onto the mountains and spectacular foliage. A few notes that might be helpful to anyone considering Hill Top: WiFi is good but if you have AT&T as a carrier be prepared to drive near town (Lake Placid) for reliable phone service. The owner does provide a phone for emergency calls but service is limited. The staircase in the home is typical of an older home - a little narrow and winding - so any guests that travel with older, larger dogs should plan to have their 4-legged companion remain downstairs. Also, best to do your grocery shipping either in Lake Placid or Elizabethtown - those larger towns will have more product options and better pricing, although there are a few local stores that carry staples and yummy baked goods and spirits. I would definitely return and recommend this bungalow to singles or couples!

Good location to hike and also visit Lake Placid
The owner is nice and the place was clean and cozy. There was no outdoor bbq Grill as advertised, but still a five star rating for this bungalow weekend trip with my wife and our dog. Thanks, Kate!

About the host
Hosted by Owner - Kate
I first came to the Adirondacks for what was supposed to be a paddling/camping trip on Saranac Lake... it turned into a life-long addiction with Lake Placid and Keene (home of the High Peaks.) I began to live here full time until the middle of 2004, when a career opportunity back on the West Coast led me to turn it into a vacation rental. I run an international travel business these days - Global Soul Adventures ...and try to visit the Adirondacks as I can.
Why they chose this property
The Adirondack Mountains are an especially spectacular place. They offer some of the highest peaks in the Northeastern US, which are home to hundreds of trails, lakes and rivers that offer up all sorts of summer and winter activities. I fell in love with Keene, and its prime location for accessing all outdoor adventures that one seeks. Additionally, the energy that continues to reside in Lake Placid from past Winter Olympics, along with currently training Olympic athletes, will inspire just about anyone to join in on the fun around town. The bungalow itself was built in 1930 and retains so much of its original charm - a clawfoot tub, castiron sink, and original flooring / stairs are some of the most unique amenities. I chose to offer this space as a vacation rental for others who love to travel - I am personally a traveler, and my ultimate wish is that other travelers will have the opportunity to fall in love with this ultra-perfect 'base camp' while enjoying all sorts of activities around the region.
