About this property

Santa Cruz Mountain Cabin. Utmost Tranquility Amongst the Redwoods!

This cabin, built in 1906, the second built in the Mount Hermon Christian Conference community, is nestled amongst majestic giant Redwoods, with lovely Zayante Creek running just below the cabin. Often, kids are down playing in the creek before the car is even unloaded! Path to the Sequoia Hiking Trail. Five minute walk to the Mount Hermon Auditorium.

Enjoy the crisp, clean air and blue sky. Guests often come to this getaway to write, catch up on some reading, or just experience a time of reflection. Great nature trails through the Redwoods located in the Mount Hermon Conference Center grounds are literally outside your front door. This place is a photographer’s dream location.

Those wanting a little more excitement might want to try the Mount Hermon Canopy Tour, a two hour tour of the Redwoods which includes six zip lines and two sky bridges!

Other visitors are drawn to the many opportunities available nearby: World Class golf courses such as Pasatiempo (10 minutes away) designed by Alister Mackenzie who designed Augusta National, site of the Masters or Pebble Beach and Spyglass less than an hour away in Carmel; the Monterey Bay Aquarium; fabulous beaches in Capitola and Santa Cruz (15 minutes); Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, an oceanfront amusement park; best shopping in the Bay area at Stanford Mall plus Stevens Creek and Santana Row in San Jose (45 minutes); many antique stores in Capitola, Aptos, Felton, and Los Gatos; wonderful restaurants throughout the area. Plus guests can enjoy all of the excitement of San Francisco, just 90 minutes away!

An absolutely 'don't miss' experience is walking the 3 mile oceanside along West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz.

You will find this rustic cabin to be in excellent condition and beautifully furnished. The cabin has a small kitchen with a table and chairs overlooking the wooded forest, an inviting living room with two couches and other seating, one bedroom with a brass queen bed with French doors opening to the living room, another bedroom with queen bed (comfy 12' mattress). A huge outside deck with a redwood picnic table and a second picnic table.

The cabin is full of antique furniture and plenty of books and games.

Decks completely surround the cabin as with spectacular views.

Dining on the deck is an option with a large propane grill.

We welcome you to a wonderful experience in this very special place.

This is a residential neighborhood located adjacent to the Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center grounds, and 'partying' is absolutely unwelcome here.

Also, for those who need to stay 'connected', WI FI is in the cabin. There is no cable or smart TV.

Absolutely no pets or smoking indoors or outdoors or anywhere on the property is allowed including the parking area. Thanks for your consideration.

We regret that the fireplace is not available for use for renters in the fall of 2025 due to fire season. Please note that there is no washer and dryer and no dishwasher. There is a drying rack available.

For those visiting the cabin without a vehicle, within a mile from the cabin, you will find a Mexican restaurant, a few coffee places, an organic market with a nice deli, a supermarket, drug store.

Best,
Stacy (co-owner with brother, Scott)

SPECIAL NOTE: From time to time Mount Hermon has weekend getaway camps for children at Redwood Camp. While this camp is across the canyon, you can expect to hear singing and announcements over the loudspeaker for periods of time (an hour usually).

Amazing and Beautiful Location!!! The property was amazing.

This is the second time my family of six has enjoyed this property and cannot say enough good things about the preparation and attention to detail to make sure that guests are comfortable here. The location is tough to beat nestled between the redwood trees and the creek running through the back. We plan on returning many times!

A BEAUTIFUL HOUSE AMONG THE REDWOODS

We really appreciated the Schmidt's Cottage, it's a beautiful, cozy old house which made us feel immediately at home. We spent two great days there, even if it rained a lot, thanks to the wonderful " faimily atmosphere " surrounding us. We recommend it to all future guests, families or group of friends.

Little Bit of Heaven!

Our stay at this cabin was amazing again. Everything was in great shape when we arrived, and all communication with the owner was both quick and reassuring. This place has become what my family looks forward to every year. The place is beautiful, surrounded by redwoods, and is in close proximity to a number of fun day trips. You simply cannot beat this cabin! Wonderful!

What an amazing spot

Thank you for a dream weekend. We used this lovely cabin for a family gathering. It is located within the redwoods, close to santa cruz and other attractions. The beds are very high quality, kitchen was all what we needed for cooking. Having shower in each room was super convenient. Only think work consider is to add more lights, especially in the kitchen.

The cabin, setting in the redwoods and location were outstanding!

The cabin is the most well- equipped I have ever seen. It is cozy, warm and with all the amenities. Easily accomodated our 4 adults and 1 teenager with room and beds to spare! Don Schmidt, the owner was great and very helpful. I would highly recommend this site! We were here in the winter and it must be even more awesome in the summer. Our gang loved the Mt Hermon zip line adventure located close by. Definitely gets an A+.

Cute, rustic place - good access to hikes

This cabin is a nice intermediate step between car-camping and full on glamping. It is a cute and rustic little cabin with a modest kitchen (no dishwasher but it has a nice gas stove) and a cozy family room that has a wood-burning fireplace. The bedrooms are all very comfortable and it was very convenient having so many bathrooms since we were a group of six. Two things to note - the only access to the downstairs is outside (which wasn't a big deal), and you are limited to short showers (which was a small annoyance post hiking, but otherwise fine). Would definitely come stay here again!

Great Cabin

We had such an amazing time at this adorable rustic cabin. It has all the amenities you need. With two beautiful rooms upstairs and a great down stairs room with a king bed and bunk beds. We were so comfortable. The creek is right below the house which made for a fun day of water play. There are great hiking trails. We hiked through the water to the waterfall close by. We loved it. It was a great escape from electronics and day to day life. It is a quick drive to Santa Cruz to visit the beach or wharf. My family enjoyed this vacation rental so much. We look forward to hopefully visiting again soon.

The Perfect Lodging for Our Hiking Group

Our group of six adults had a wonderful stay at the Schmidt family cabin in Mount Hermon. When we arrived we stepped outside the back and scouted out the beautiful trail system along a stream through a lush redwood forest. The bedrooms were clean, tasteful, and comfortable, each with its own bathroom, and the kitchen was well-appointed. The living room was the perfect size for our fun ukulele jam, and we appreciated the Ipod speaker for additional entertainment. Don, the owner, quickly responded to our questions and gave good recommendations. The cabin instructions are thorough and friendly. In addition to hiking around the cabin, we hiked the 8.2 Fall Creek Unit trail in nearby Henry Cowell State Park. Gorgeous!!

A cozy cabin in the redwoods.

The cabin is just as comfy as it looks. We live a few miles away and rented the upper and lower rooms for family coming on vacation. Big comfortable beds, kitchen with all the necessities. You can hear the creek and small waterfall from the deck. And see the creek down below. Beautiful. A little tricky parking as the driveway is a short steep incline, if you are not comfortable with that. We had no problem with it, but my father in law probably couldn't park there. Less than a mile from groceries, drug store, etc. Quiet and peaceful area. The nearby contact for the cabin is very kind and helpful. Would definitely rent it again.

Cozy Cabin in the Redwoods

We stayed here for 3 nights. The weather was cool and rained much of the time so we enjoyed the wood burning stove every evening. There is much to do close by. I went on the Redwood Canopy Tour, which is about a 10 minute walk from the cabin. The creek, with all of the rain, was more like a river, so there was plenty of soothing background noise. There are a few things to keep in mind though. This is a cabin, NOT a house, so though there are 3 bathrooms, the 2 bathrooms upstairs are very small. I did enjoy the overhead heat lamps, kind of "old school". There is plenty of deck space with plenty of seating, but with the rain, we were not able to enjoy this feature, which I can only imagine would be unbelievable in nicer weather. The counter space in the kitchen is also a bit limited. As a cabin, for sure +5 stars, as a home 3 stars. I would for sure stay here again.

True cabin in the woods!

We LOVED this cabin! A true old-school cabin in the woods with the bonus that they're in the redwoods. It was built around 1906 and has the feel and charm of that era with some modern conveniences. If you want luxury, this may not be for you. If you want an "up close and personal" experience of the redwoods in your front yard and have glorious hikes down the hill or a short drive away, this is the place for you!

Checks all the boxes.

The cabin itself is cozy and inviting. The creek is beautiful and hiking is available right outside the door. When you sit on the deck, it feels really private. Just a great place to unwind for a few days while still being close to restaurants and stores. Mountain coffee was really good and next store you can grab a donut. It’s a gem!

Santa Cruz Cabin Retreat

Shelley is a an outstanding manager of this great cabin get away. This is a nice place where you can relax on the beautiful deck with family and friends or get out and explore Santa Cruz and Monterey. The bedrooms each have their own bathrooms. They are tiny, but serviceable. It is almost like two cabins in one because the downstairs has its own deck, entry, and bathroom.

Fun cabin in the woods

Really cool spot - view of the creek from both decks. Also, we had more than 3 cars, but there were options for additional cars staying an extra night which was convenient for our situation. Place was right along the Sequoia trail which was for an accessible hike that we didn't need to drive to. That being said, the path to the trail is a pretty sharp grade. Would recommend real hiking shoes. Close to town, restaurants, attractions and grocery store as advertised. Easy access to Santa Cruz via Route 9. Also super close to the zip line and eco adventure tour there, although we didn't take advantage of that. No TV in the living room, but several board games. Only an old TV with built in DVD player downstairs (also lots of kids DVDs available), and a more modern TV in the first bedroom upstairs with HDMI plugin. We didn't have kids there but it seems like a decent option if guests had kids that needed entertainment. Beds seemed nice as well, although the bunk beds are kids sized (as advertised). Upstairs separated from downstairs by outdoor staircase accessible by the deck. Deck had several lounge chairs, although we didn't use them. Deck was well built and had grill + nice big picnic table, although probably want to wear shoes around there. Kitchen was well stocked with cooking tools, oil, table settings, and coffee supplies. However, no condiments were to be found (not a problem, but sometimes family cabins have those available). Never used the wood burning stove fireplace thingy, but there was kindling and a fair amount of firewood there. All in all, advertised accurately and responsive hosts (although we never met the hosts during our stay, I'm sure they could have been available if needed). Not to mention, pretty amazing being in a cabin with beautiful forest and redwoods all around!
