It was nice and relaxing...walking, swimming, biking, kayaking and beaching. The house was super cool...150 years old! Nice old fashioned laid back beach vacation! Mary the host was wonderful!

Thank you Noelle! You were the ideal cottage guests, ready to explore and enjoy.
It was a great week there. The owner has a very easy process of check in and out. Just steps away from the water and plenty of items to use. Saves you from more packing. Very clean and related atmosphere.

Antique and worn
While the house was clean and in a good location, it is very old. There is no air conditioning which is problematic on hot days. The attic fan was very old and not working. It would have been difficult to stay there if the weather had not cooled considerably.
The electrical wiring is all exposed and some of it looked pretty outdated.
The overall decor seemed to be turn of the last century. Other than the beds, Much of the furniture is fragile and uncomfortable. The interior is very dark, including ancient pictures on the walls. the stairs are quite steep and can be tricky in the middle of the night. I have a splinter embedded under a fingernail from holding onto the wall going down the stairs. Ended up in urgent care as a result.
The owner seems very nice and tried to be helpful but lives in Cal.
Although we enjoyed Westbrook and the neighborhood, would definitely not rent again.

Thank you for your feedback. The description of this property addresses many of the concerns you reference in your review:
No air conditioning: a/c is not listed as an amenity in the VRBO listing. The cottage is uninsulated, as originally built, and cannot have air conditioning.
The attic fan was installed in 2017, to maximize ways to cool the cottage on hot days. I am sorry you did not have more time to problem solve with me over the phone to get it started when you arrived. I know you were anxious to get on with plans when you told me you thought a family member could solve it. Apparently, by the next day the weather had changed and you didn't feel the need to have my neighbor help you. He did come by after you left and, as I suspected, the switches in the attic and in the kitchen were not in sync. Lesson learned: I need to tell renters to only use the kitchen switch. As we discussed, the windows and doors line up to allow breezes to pass straight through the house and there are numerous fans throughout.
Exposed knob and tube wiring in the stairway is probably 100 years old and is non-functional. I left it in place for historical accuracy and sentimentality. All live electrical wiring has been inspected and is deemed safe. You may have noticed if you tried to turn those switches that nothing happened; the light didn't go on.
The cottage is well over 100 years old, vintage 1872. Reference the historical society photo in the listing showing the cottage at its first location, attached to an observation tower and an adjacent cottage. These were boarding house cottages and were moved to the current location.
Style is antique with many original features
in description
- Marble top server in dining room (19th century)
- additionally, and not in description - the queen sized sleeper sofa on the first floor is top of the line and less than two years old
additionally, and not in description
- the Morris chairs offer adjustable seating with updated cushions covered with quality fabric. There are numerous throw pillows to get comfy with.
- dining room chairs and porch chairs all have updated seat cushions and backs for comfort
- the "ancient pictures" are in keeping with the 19th century. Some are original from the cottage's early years in the first part of the 20th century
- the interior has been largely left as built, with exposed wood, which darkens over time.
The stairs are described as steep in the listing. I'm very sorry to hear of your splinter and regret that you didn't contact me at the time rather than informing me of it via this review.
Though I am on the other side of the continent, I have friends and family nearby in CT who help out.
It is clear that the caption for this property, "Family compound, vintage 1872 cottage water views", and the description that followed may not have been read thoroughly before deciding to rent. For future VRBO property rentals you may consider, I urge you to read about the property in its entirety to ensure an enjoyable stay.
Very nice property, 4 bedrooms, sleeper couch, fans galore, so close to the water, would absolutely rent again.

Our third stay.
We have stayed at this cottage the past 3yrs.
The accommodations are great. The cottage has a special charm.
The outdoor shower is wonderful.
The best part is the location, just 300 ft from the beach, in a nice neighbor.
It is conveniently located near everything

It is especially gratifying when guests enjoy it so much they come back. I love to see family traditions of gathering together in Westbrook. There have been so many over the many years. Maybe that's the charm.

WEST BEACH VICTORIAN COTTAGE
This was thoroughly enjoyable. The cottage is very clean & well maintained. You can immediately sense the 100+ years of enjoyment people have experienced there as soon as you enter the cottage. Located under 200 steps from a very nice beach that is visible from the front porch. MANY great restaurants are within short driving distance.
The beach community setting is very relaxing for adults, and safe for young children.
I would return in the future and would recommend without hesitation to others.

It always pleases me when vacationers enter into the historical spirit of my cottage and relax back in time. I hope that they come away feeling rejuvenated and uplifted. It's the "gift of the sea" to paraphrase Anne Morrow Lindbergh or, in this case, the "gift of West Beach". I appreciate the lovely review and apt description of the area. I look forward to many more people enjoying similar experiences over the years.

I am a third generation owner of this property, now living in San Diego, CA. I return to Westbrook every summer to unwind and regroup. It's my place of renewal.
Why they chose this property
Purchased by my grandparents in 1915 when 'venturesome cottagers' began to populate the CT shoreline to escape the industrial atmosphere of the cities and it's associated ailments. It remains my favorite escape, full of childhood memories of family and fun.
There is a unique history of this cottage and the one adjacent and the former cottage across from that. Those two were mirror images of mine, with some variation in the placement of the kitchens. They were all moved from possibly Quotonset Beach at the turn of the 20th Century, floated on barges and then pulled up from West Beach on horse-drawn sledges.
A unique historical neighborhood with many of the original families still present. Read the September 12, 1895 description of West Beach "cottagers" in this New York Times article:
What makes this property unique
My grandmother visited beaches all along the CT shore in the early 20th century and settled on West Beach as the best beach. It is a lovely sand beach nestled into a crescent of the CT shoreline with a view of Long Island across the Sound. Great for swimming and for children to play on the sand bars.
