About this property

The Hynes Cabin- 1925 Renovated Classic with Stunning Views

The Hynes Family Cabin is a once-in-a lifetime experience. Built by our grandparents nearly a century ago, the cabin will transport you and your family back to the beautiful, authentic charms of the Old West, while you enjoy plenty of modern amenities.

The cabin sleeps seven, with three twin beds and two queen beds. Its 40’ wide sleeping porch is unique, and has a truly breathtaking view. Our grandparents chose this location for the most beautiful vista they’d ever seen. At sunset, you’ll see Mt. Elkhorn and Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) glow pink and gold. An occasional rainbow will dazzle you. Each morning you can watch a herd of horses running from their nearby pasture to the stable.

Children love the Hynes Cabin. Great climbing rocks are all around. Our original ball and claw bathtub is on the porch, filled with pillows and inviting kids to read and snooze. “A Boy’s Life in the Hills,” written by our dad, shares tales of his many adventures. Our guests love to sit on the porch or in our cozy living room and read tales about the West. It’s a place that encourages rest and renewal, with lots of fun things to do close by and a quiet place to come home to at day’s end.

There’s a chest full of fun family games and a DVD player. KOA amenities – trail rides, a water slide, miniature golf, two swimming pools, movie nights and pancake breakfasts – are available. Only the trail rides and pancake breakfasts have a fee. Many nearby trails invite hikers of all skill levels. Iconic Mt. Rushmore and charming Hill City, “the art capital of the Hills,” are both just six miles away. Pristine Sheridan Lake, where the family can swim, fish and hike, is only a 15-minute drive away.

The Hynes cabin is a perfect place for a romantic getaway, too. Its beauty, quiet and privacy will help you relax and refresh. There are two queen beds, one on the porch and one in the living room.

There are so many personal touches that you’ll feel right at home. Our handsome queen headboards were made by a local carpenter, and the four pine chests were built for the cabin in 1925. Frances made all the curtains by hand, just as our grandmother did nearly a century ago. On the porch there’s a display of some of the daily objects she used: her apron, her Vaseline glassware, her Mixmaster and other objects. The coffee table was made from the cabin’s original closet. Newly installed solid wood doors compliment the cabin’s authentic feel. A book of photos tells the history of the Hynes Cabin.

The 40’ wide sleeping porch is just as it was 100 years ago, with our family’s saddles hanging on the rafters. Antique light fixtures from the 1930s adorn the two bathrooms. The newly refurbished kitchen is fully equipped. And for nearly 100 years, guests have been sharing their memories and whimsy on paper plates that are all part of this truly unique experience. We look forward to hosting you in our Hynes Family Cabin.

Nice place to retreat to. Beautiful views and was exciting to see the horses rounded up everyday. Lots of wildlife and family friendly things to do. Do not leave the koa park to get to cabin. We had trouble finding the cabin in the rain because we kept leaving the park.

The Hynes Family Cabin provided our family of 5 an excellent stay. Our host's communications were clear and concise and helpful. The cabin itself was a gem, retaining wonderful character from its original construction in 1925, yet providing more than sufficient amenities that we look for in the present. It was very clean and very well and thoughtfully provisioned. The outdoor gas grill was great, and we still had a fire pit for roasting wieners and making s'mores or just to keep warm at night while gazing at the star filled sky. Loved the sleeping porch with its multiple beds and the large screened windows that let cool breezes through as the summer heats up. I thought the coolest items were the historical pictures and explanation of how the cabin has been updated over the years, and the historical narrative of a member of the family that built and stills owns the cabin. So much history here in the Black Hills, and the family's history is intertwined. Guess I love to see how history feathers into current day. Location is absolutely great - close to all the major Black Hills attractions. You're in the midst of them all! Great logistics. Super hiking. And great for families with kids - plenty to keep busy. This was our first year vacationing here, and on our 8 hour drive home our children were asking, "Can we come back next year?" Hmmm....Mom and Dad had the same idea! Thank you so much, Hynes Family, for sharing your wonderful cabin and all its surroundings with us!!!!!!!!

What a wonderful treasure! This place reminded me of a home I used to visit in the Adirondacks, so it felt nostalgic. The view was amazing. We appreciated the warm bathrooms because we were there with a cold front, and it got really cold. LOVED it here!

Fabulous stay!

We loved our time at the cabin- it was nice to have all the amenities of KOA but also be tucked away in the quiet of the cabin. We loved sleeping on the porch, watching the horses run by each evening, and the cabin was very well stocked.

Scenic view with charm

We loved staying in the Hynes Cabin! The charm of the 100 year old cabin and sleeping porch really made our trip. It was comfy and a great place to land after a day of exploring the Black Hills. We wished there had been WiFi just to be able to plan our day out, look at directions for our outings, and reserve tickets for tours.

Wonderful stay

Of all the places I've rented, this is my favorite. Cannot beat the location and amenities and charm this place has. Loved the paper plates on the walls. The host had this stocked with everything we could possibly need and more. Loved watching the horses run every morning and evening, the various wildlife living the rocks near the cabin, and the beautiful views, especially every evening. I hope to take many more vacations in the Black Hills, and this will be the place I look first to rent.

About the host

Hosted by Arthur Hynes

Host profile image
The Hynes family built this cabin in 1925. It was the first cabin on what we consider the most beautiful valley in the Black Hills. Our grandparents, Mary Louise (whom we called Sister) and Dibrell Hynes were invited by friends to come for a visit to the Black Hills from Evanston, Illinois where they lived. They fell in love with the Hills, and Palmer Gulch in particular, and decided to build a cabin here.

Every summer after that, Sister and her three children, Jim (our father), and his older sisters Aubrey and Susan would make the arduous three-day car trip from Evanston, camping along the way. They’d spend the whole summer here, riding their own horses, roaming freely, fishing, hiking and exploring. Dibrell was a geologist, so he could identify any rock we found. He would come to the cabin for his vacation by train every summer, and the family traveled around the west, visiting America’s other magnificent national parks.

The third generation of the Hynes family, Frances, Carol and Arthur, along with our cousins, spent summers staying at the cabin as children, and the Black Hills entered our blood. Now our children and their children delight in spending time here. Five generations have loved this cabin! We are very happy to share our special place and its history with visitors. Have a wonderful time!

~ Arthur and Frances Hynes

Our manager, Kimberly Herman, grew up in the Stillwater, Oklahoma area. She moved to Moorehead, MN and then to Hill City where she lives now. Kimberly is a responsive and efficient manager who makes all our guests feel right at home, and we are very grateful to have her as part of our Hynes Family Cabin team.
