About this property

Waterfront nature-lover's retreat on wildlife refuge in Prime Hook Beach

We renovated the house in 2023, filling it with comfortable furnishings--nothing fancy or precious, but collected and cared for. We like comfy linens and a clean house (consider leaving the sand outside by leaving your shoes on the deck or by the door). A new washer and dryer were installed off the kitchen for your convenience. We like to cook and make coffee, so the kitchen well-equipped for you to make your own meals. The walls are decorated with vintage book plates and lithographs, bookshelves stocked and a record player with some fun vinyl finds! The garage features an arcade-size air hockey table, adult and kid bikes, a paddle board and kayak for the bay and beach toys/chairs (feel free to ask about specifics). Leave the bulky baby gear at home--we have a pack-n-play and a double stroller for use. Bring your own gear for fishing/crabbing/canoeing/water sports and store it in our large garage.

Welcome to The Shorebird, a peaceful get-away in Prime Hook Beach, Delaware. Fully renovated in 2023, our all-season home overlooks the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge and sits across the street from the private and quiet Delaware Bay beach. Close to the popular Delaware beaches, Cape Henlopen State Park, restaurants, shopping and action for the kids but tucked away from the traffic and crowds. Prime Hook Beach sits along the Atlantic Flyway, and the protected waters behind the house not only provide privacy but also a front-row seat to migratory birds stopping through.

We’re you're kind of place if you enjoy:
-Being off the beaten path: we're just a small, nature-forward community along the bay and the refuge. Zero commercialization.
-Sunrise-watching, surf fishing, kayaking and paddle boarding across the street.
-Lazing on the long, natural/uncombed beach while sharing it with horseshoe crabs (who spawn along our beaches in May/June), shorebirds and treasures that constantly change with the seasons and tides.
-Beach combing for various welks, clams, stones, beach glass and even the occasional north star coral.
-Watching migratory birds (including shorebirds, birds of prey, waterfowl and thousands of snow geese every winter) deer, foxes, rabbits and sunsets over the refuge water from the comfort of our huge windows or back porch.
-Catching crabs or fish off the bridge and cooking them for dinner.
-Kayaking, fresh water fishing and birdwatching from the many close-by trails.
-Taking the bikes for a spin through the refuge and neighboring farmland.
-Heading out to the close-by, historic towns of Milton and Lewes for great restaurants, shopping, antiquing and shows.
-Ending the night with drinks and a fire on the beach.
-Staying in and cozying up to the gas fireplace while stargazing out the picture window.

We strive to have a clean and organized home so that your stay is comfortable. Our guests love the numerous amenities we provide so that you don't have to pack them: quality sheets & towels, plenty of blankets and pillows and a well-stocked kitchen. For the beach we have 8 chairs, an umbrella & tent, a backpack cooler, lots of toys and a beach cart to lug it all. Bring your kayaks and paddle boards or use our inflatable ones. We also have bikes for the whole family, plenty of books, puzzles & games (even an air hockey and ping pong table). Our beach has small bay waves but please note that it does not have lifeguards. Come to relax and explore!

Wow! What a beautiful property - both the location and the house itself. Julie and Donovan have thought of everything - there was nothing that wasn't immediately available to us. The views were stunning, especially the sunsets over the reeds behind the house. It was magical sitting in the screened porch listening to birdsong - we could have done that all day long. It was a magical getaway for us!

Great weekend

My husband and I had a wonderful, relaxing stay at this very comfortable and charming house. The views of the nature sanctuary are beautiful. Its a very short walk to the beach. Its a wonderfully untouched natural beach. The owners are very kind and went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. We'll be back. warmwr.littlehaeveveverythiout

Delaware Beach

Mid century decor meets beachy simple chic in a home that sits, and feels, bigger than it is. Great music on the record player and fun games to pass the time between gazing at wildlife and sunsets. Close enough to Rehoboth touristy fun, but plenty distant to feel secluded, too. Was a perfect ending to a week in DC.

Beautiful home and location

Highly recommend this property! It’s a beautiful house, just as pictured, and the location is amazing! Perfect for a quiet, relaxing vacation but close enough to local attractions. If you’re a nature lover this is the place for you. Plenty of wildlife to enjoy and beautiful sunsets in the evening that you can view right from the living room or back porch. The owners provide nearly everything you might need and plenty of special touches that didn’t go unnoticed.

Mother/Daughter weekend

We couldn't have asked for a better setting for our weekend. The area is peaceful and quiet, and only 30 minutes from Rehoboth and Lewes for more activity. The house is clean, extremely well stocked and beautifully layed out. Julie's amazing to deal with. She's prompt to reply and helpful with recommendations. We'll definitely be returning in the future.

Amazing!

Can’t say enough about this wonderful vacation home. The house is incredibly clean, comfortable, and beautifully decorated, the location is amazing. House is very well stocked with everything a family might need, bedding is fresh and new and comfy. Views of the nature preserve are stunning, and the calm and quiet private beach is only steps from the door. We were over there multiple times a day, for beachcombing and walks (April weather was lovely but too chilly for swimming). A quiet location and easy to get to the busier beaches and towns nearby, we did lots of exploring around the area. It was a perfect fit for our family of five. Julie the host was fantastic - very communicative, shared lots of details about the house and nearby amenities that helped make our stay even more enjoyable. Highly recommend. We hope to be back soon!

beautiful marsh-side beach house

We had a wonderful stay here over Labor Day weekend. The house is beautiful and cozy with perfect screened in porches on the front and back of the house. The back of the house has an incredible view over the wildlife reserve, and the sunsets are breathtaking. The beach is just a short walk across the road, and we were lucky to have great weather to enjoy the quiet beachfront. The basement air hockey table was a huge hit with our kids who were down there playing almost every moment we were at the house. And the host is extremely personable and responsive. We would love to visit the house again!

Absolutely Perfect

This rental was amazing. The views and sunsets were spectacular; the house was beautiful; the walks on the beach were relaxing. The owners of this house really know how to take care of their renters -- everything you can think of was considered from simple things like extra hooks to hang towels and coats on to the kitchen that had everything we could need (no more only one knife and one pot like other rentals!). The house was immaculate as everything looked new, clean and was comfortable, especially the beds. We will definitely back to this gem on the Delaware Bay!

My new happy place

First - Prime Hook is an incredibly beautiful spot very quiet and natural. This lovingly cared for home backs to the nature preserve, and is across the street from the beach. There was one day when I saw the sunrise at the beach and the sunset from the screened in porch over the preserve. Second, the owners are lovely and responsive and have clearly put a lot of thought into everything and anything you might actually need. The kitchen has everything you might want if you bake or cook. There are a ton of games and beach items and plenty of nice blankets to snuggle into. Wonderful find. We will be back.

Excellent property

As soon as we got there, our minds relaxed. It's in a great location. When they say it's away from crowds and traffic, they aren't kidding. The view of the refuge is one of the best views we've ever had from a vacation rental. The house is very organized and comfortable. It's newly renovated and beautiful. Sunset views are amazing. I really can't say enough good things about it. We must have rented at least a dozen VRBO properties, and this one is near the top, if not the best one. If you haven't been to Primehook before, it's definitely a must. We wanted to stay a third night, but our schedules didn't allow it. Hopefully, we will come back to visit again soon.

The house is beautiful and the community is welcoming!

We had an amazing time. The location is serene and the host did an amazing job decorating the home and staying in contact which made us feel comfortable, connected, and safe. We had a group of ladies from 30-60+. Seeing the sunset, having a drink, and gathering by the fireplace created an opportunity for openness that could used for teens as well. We saw people within the community walking their dogs/puppies and they were considerate in giving the dog commands to sit and allowed us to pet their animals. I believe that is what makes a great and respectful community. The host had everything you need to cook in, go outside, or create a fire pit. I could continue to go on and on, but the bottom line is - stay on Shore Drive and you/your family will enjoy yourself! I can’t wait to go back.

Beautiful home with Refuge view

The owner could not be more pleasant and accommodating - she was so responsive! The check-in and check-out procedures were easy and quick. The house was spotlessly clean and had a lovely porch that overlooks the refuge. The beach is very close and easy to access across the street and a few doors down. It unfortunately had a lot of seaweed and horseshoe crab shells due to a hurricane that happened right before we arrived but that is of course unpredictable - can't control the weather. For better weather, the owner provides beach chairs, beach towels, inflatable kayaks, and beach toys. The beds were very comfortable; the kitchen has the pans, pots, plates, glassware, coffee maker - anything you need really to make your meals. The bathrooms were very clean. Washer and dryer available for use. The weather for us was very windy and sometimes not conducive for outdoor activities but there are plenty of nearby places to visit if, like us, you happen to plan for the weekend after a big storm. We had a great time despite the weather and would love to go back to really enjoy the nearby beach. The house is lovely and had plenty of room for us. It is as described and the owner is very helpful.

We are frequenters of VRBOs and this is one of the very best we have experienced, and by far the best in terms of amenities provided, especially for children! Can’t think of anything that was missing. We loved the house and the views of the wildlife refuge. The beach was super convenient, and totally uncrowded. The only nightlife came from the animal kingdom. Julie was an excellent communicator. Can’t wait to come back!

We had a restful stay, great communication from the host, amazing view of the marsh and wildlife. The kitchen was easily the best supplied we've ever experienced in a vacation rental. We appreciated all the family games and attention to creature comforts. The property is peaceful and close to nature, even while taking time indoors. I loved watching the wind through the marsh grasses with the diverse birds hunting and walking on the sandbars at low tide looking at the bay's creatures.

Peaceful, relaxing!

There are images that stay in your mind, for the rest of your life. For these images, photography is optional, at best. It's hard for me to describe the feeling in my heart, as I watched my wife, cradling my nephew's ten month old daughter, in her arms, while they examined her new toys, carefully, one at a time. I, of course, cheat, and take dozens of pictures on my cell phone, most as similar as the others, with me seeking to find that "best shot".So, here we are, all of us, cradled in the luxury of the Shorebird, whose owners have taken every care and consideration possible in preparing such a wonderful place to stay, and have been as warm and welcoming as anyone could ever ask. Everything at the Shorebird contributes to a peaceful, quiet, relaxing time: quiet mornings, at sunrise, on the front porch, spending time gently strumming my guitar, while the birds accompany me in some soft songs; quiet evenings, at sunset, watching the birds, the rabbits, and even the deer, enjoying their sanctuary with them; the comfortable and luxurious furnishings, which afforded each of us, whether lounging in the family room, watching an old movie, or, getting a restful night's sleep on the luxurious bedding in each of the bedrooms.Everything about the Shorebird is positive. I would definitely stay at this property, again, when in the area. Thank you, so much, Julie and Donovan!

Our new home away from home!

We had an incredible stay at The Shorebird! Everything has been completely renovated/updated and thoughtfully stocked with all the essentials—and then some. The house was spotless and beautifully maintained. We have never stayed in such a welcoming rental, it instantly felt like home away from home. The location was absolutely stunning, with a peaceful nature reserve right behind the home and large windows that let us take in the serene views and the small private beach just across the street. It was the perfect spot to relax and unwind. We especially loved watching the beautiful sunset over the water every night from the back porch, Julie & Donovan also went above and beyond with entertainment options—bikes to explore the neighborhood, a great selection of games and puzzles, and a record player we absolutely loved. They had something for everyone with their selection of records. It was the perfect addition to a relaxing stay and created such a cozy, nostalgic vibe. Our family had a blast escaping the hustle and bustle in this quiet, isolated island town, yet we still enjoyed the nearby shopping and local brewery, just a short drive away. We have never vacationed in Delaware before, but we can almost promise more visits in the future. Absolutely no complaints—this place exceeded our expectations in every way. We’ve found our new happy place and can’t wait to book again!

Beautiful location

The house and surroundings are incredible. We enjoyed sitting on the porch watching the birds and from the living room windows. The rooms are large and the owners provide everything you need and more. Very clean! This house borders the National Wildlife Refuge and the views are stunning. We were able to kayak in the Refuge area. The staff at the visitors center were very helpful. It is quiet and peaceful and a short drive to Dewey and Rehoboth. We highly recommend this location for a stay in the Delaware Bay area. Our rating would be a 10!

This house is perfect for a serene getaway. We came for a long weekend in November, so definitely the off season for a beach community. Perfect Family Getaway: Peaceful, Beautifully Curated, and Unforgettable Stay at The Shorebird

Our stay at *The Shorebird* was magical. From the moment we arrived, we felt at home, as though we’d known the owners for years. The house was beautifully curated, impeccably clean, and decorated to perfection, setting the stage for an incredibly relaxing and memorable family getaway. The thoughtful design and decor truly made the house feel like a retreat, providing a welcoming space for unwinding and reconnecting. The location couldn’t have been more ideal. Everything we wanted to do—bird watching, beachcombing, bike rides, crabbing—was either a short walk away or a brief drive. Waking up to the peaceful surroundings of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge and having the private beach just across the street was beyond special. We spent early mornings watching sunrises over the bay, enjoyed family crabbing excursions, and ended our days with beachside fires under the stars -- and comets! Communication with the owners was easy, quick, and comfortable, which added even more warmth to our stay. They clearly put a lot of thought into creating a well-stocked, welcoming environment with everything a family could need—from quality, comfortable bedding, to beach and bike gear. The Shorebird gave us the rare chance to slow down, reconnect with each other, and soak in the beauty of this unique place. We left refreshed and grateful for such a wonderful experience. Highly recommend to anyone seeking a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path escape.

Perfect House and Perfect Location

This was my second trip to Prime Hook Beach in September and my first stay at this property. The owners have thought of everything from kids' toys to kitchen implements to labels on the light switches. I love the real plants in the house, too. There are plenty of bikes and beach chairs. The bed is comfortable. The view of the wildlife refuge is stunning. I spent a great deal of time on the back porch. I've rented many houses and condos from VRBO, and this was the best.

About the host

Host profile image
As a little girl, my grandmother called me her shorebird. I fiercely loved exploring the beach from the time I was a small child, collecting shells, rocks and starfish in the early morning hours. She instilled a curiosity of nature in me, always eager to celebrate its abundant beauty and make friends with all creatures. She would have loved Prime Hook--it's is the perfect place to quietly beach-comb for treasures, observe the ever-changing migratory birds and drink in a colorful sky. Come settle in and explore at The Shorebird! ~Julie

Why they chose this property

Our property backs up to Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, over 10,000 acres of protected land that is home to foxes, deer, rabbits and more than 200 species of migratory birds--all of which can be viewed while drinking your coffee. We created this home as a sanctuary of peace, welcoming all those who wish to create, explore and connect with themselves and each other.

Prime Hook Beach is a sleepy town--there are no stores or restaurants--meant for shore fishing, crabbing, trail walking, water sports and riding bikes. It is a private bay beach for homeowners and their guests (this includes renters), which is what makes it so quiet. The beach is maintained by residents, so it is a natural, uncombed shoreline. Every day is different, but be prepared to find spawning horseshoe crabs, seaweed, welks and driftwood. Watch the sun rise over the bay, go for a moonlit walk and make a bonfire on the beach to roast marshmallows. Visit the refuge's welcome center and explore their many trails--bring your own binoculars and canoe to launch. If staying put is more your speed, enjoy our kayak and paddle board in the Delaware Bay across the street or surf fish. Bring your own fishing/crabbing gear or visit Ted's tackle and bait shop only 10 minutes away. Catch your own crabs at the bridge into town--Old Bay and a crab pot await you in the kitchen!

Those interesting in larger, ocean waves and bike & kayak trails can head south to Cape Henlopen State Park. We are less than 10 minutes off the coastal highway connecting to many restaurants, golf courses, movies, go-kart race tracks, antiquing, waterparks, Tanger Outlets, Dogfishhead Brewery, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry and Delaware's Atlantic beaches such as Rehoboth where you'll find the boardwalk with rides.

What makes this property unique
