About this property
Historic House on San Antonio River and Mission Trail next to Mission San Juan
Historic House on San Antonio River and Mission hike and bike trail. Our casa is right next door to one of San Antonio's five mission's, Mission San Juan Capistrano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We are on the San Antonio River and the wonderful newly renovated hike and bike trail that connect all the Missions. Skip rocks on the river, watch the sunset or curl up in our comfortable, charming home. With extensive grounds, nestled on 2 acres, we have a real 'getting away from it all' feel while still being conveniently located to all of San Antonio's best attractions -10 miles to The Alamo- 3 miles to grocery stores, restaurants, a movie theater and shopping!
History: The main portion of the house was built 1890ish and then the rest was added in the late 20s. All the land to the south of the home used to be owned by the Southwells. It was a pecan orchard. The river portion to your west was cut in the late 50s in order to move water out if downtown more rapidly and prevent flooding. The river to the east is the original river remnant and has incredible bird life. You may also see coyotes and wild hogs on the river. It is rumored to have been a stagecoach stop and even a brothel.

I loved the location; we walked to the mission and to a park nearby; the house was decorated so uniquely; the pool was relaxing and there was so many places to sit and admire the outdoors.
To say our stay was enjoyable is an understatement! We came to San Antonio for our son’s AIT graduation at Fort Sam Houston. This place was a wonderful quiet respite for our family visit with our soldier. The location and surroundings made this historic house a destination. The house itself was a living museum, with thoughtful decor displaying interesting artwork and antiques. A moment to live in a yesteryear setting, stepping back in time listening to old records. Many wonderful memories were made but a favorite was playing cards sitting around a western leather table and chairs. I appreciate the host sharing this historical gem experience with others!
This spot was amazing!! Full of history, style and charm- pure San Antonio. Ten out of ten for my family! My daughters were enthralled with the loft and the terrace overlooking the fig trees, and there were books and reading nooks galore. The plunge pool was a big hit, as well, and there is a swing-set. We loved having easy access to the river trails and the atmosphere felt very old-school, in the best sense. Esmerelda's Mexican restaurant was within walking distance and had the BEST breakfast. While my older children loved the home, we did have to exercise vigilance in regards to our toddlers. There are steep stone stairs and a small pond behind the house. There is a rooster on the property, but the hostess thoughtfully supplied sound machines in each room. She was responsive and kind, and I think she truly values the saying "Mi casa es su casa." Highly recommend.
We loved staying at this character-filled and beautifully-appointed home! The location was so cool being next door to mission San Juan and riverwalk hike and bike trail, and we loved the roaming chickens and dogs on the property. We would definitely stay here again for a long weekend. It’s the perfect place to relax and hang out with family and friends.
Great location for visiting Lackland AFB during our son’s Basic Training—very convenient and close to Riverwalk. The area itself is a bit rough and not our usual preference, as we typically lean toward Hill Country stays.Guests should be aware that dogs and chickens can be noisy, trains pass at night, the master bedroom is a walk-through without a lock, and a caretaker family lives on the grounds. That said, the property is private from neighbors, fairly priced, and full of character. Good value for travelers prioritizing proximity to the base.
Had an expo to attend with family and friends. I booked this place not really knowing what to expect but it was amazing. The property is very secluded and personal that it made our experience very pleasant the home is beautiful inside and out. Just a great place to go and stay and get away
This wonderful property is situated perfectly to access all of SA, and in particular the mission trail and SA River parks and trails.
It is very comfy and clean. A great place to stay on your visit to the city.
Absolutely amazing property that we will definitely be renting again! Decor and ammenities we're amazing, communication is great, and the location is fantastic. A hidden gem!
The San Antonio River House is my dream home. I absolutely loved my stay there; it was just so idyllic. It was a great birthday trip. I didn’t want to leave, but I will definitely book again in the future.
This property is beautifully designed with all the right touches for inspiring gathering and connecting. Margaret was super helpful and flexible in accommodating our needs! Definitely a gem of a spot and great folks who are there to make it special:).
The property has cozy charm and is a great escape from the city. Pleanty of cool little spots to hang out and enjoy coffee in the morning. The dip pool is great when its hot out. Be advised the main bedroom has the bathroom in it that everyone uses. The basement steps are very steep.
Came for a staycation with small group of family & friends. Incredible, historic property with every amenity you can think of. Gorgeous land & native plants. Walkable to historic Bergs Mill, Mission San Juan, and riverwalk.
What a treasure, this river house is! Very eclectic decor, well appointed & equipped. The area is just beautiful, you can happily stay put and you are in easy striking distance of ALL the things you could want to do in San Antonio.
The pics do not do this gorgeous house justice. It's incredible! We loved hanging out, drinking wine, doing puzzles and just enjoying the beauty of the house. It's also in a great location. We loved it!
This historic property was amazing! The outside was perfect! We didn't want to leave!
Everything was just as stated & seen in the listing. We loved this beautiful place & wanted to stay longer! Margaret was easy to contact & all questions were covered in the welcome book. We didn't have any issues & would love to stay again!
Reminder of days on the ranch. Great acreage with multiple cozy sitting areas. Plunge pool is just right for youngsters. The house is a delight around every corner. Hope to return soon.
We enjoyed our stay at this unique property both inside and out!
Esmeralda’s on the corner has the best breakfast in town.
Record player was a fun touch! Love all the separate sitting areas.
To help with sleeping arrangements, both staircases are extremely steep and narrow so seniors and very young kids that get up in the night might need assistance for safety reasons.

Delightful Home Away from home
We loved everything about the home and amenities it had to offer. Although I love animals, the "angry bird" around the home wasn't so pleasant to be around. Otherwise, I would give 5 stars!

We have an insatiable case of wanderlust - we traveled around the world for 6 months prior to getting married. Two teenage sons with the same love of travel. San Antonio is an absolute favorite and the riverhouse is truly our happy place.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with this historic treasure and renovated it to preserve its roots. When we bought the house it needed a lot of love - it had gone to disarray, but after a lot of sweat and restoration magic, it is now a treasure. The original house was built pre1900. The rest of the house was added in the 30s. It used to be a ranch (cows, sheep, goats) and a pecan orchard. There have been whispers of it being a stagecoach stop, brothel and popular spot during prohibition. The ruin across the street is what's left of Berg's Mill. San Juan, the mission next door was built mid 1700s. The ambiance of our property is seductively peaceful - we are so glad the house can continue to enchant visitors!
What makes this property unique
We have a fountain and a pond - our kids love looking for frogs, or feeding the fish. The birding on and around our property is spectacular. In the wintertime, we love having fires in the fireplaces, especially the fireplace in the master bedroom. Our property is surrounded by national park land so we are very secluded.
