Lovely cottage so close to Lake Michigan

We felt privileged to stay in such a beautifully restored cottage in such a quiet neighborhood. It was a very peaceful retreat, and we would go back in a heartbeat.

Loved our stay!

My husband and I came with four teenage girls and had a lovely time! The location can't be beat, is in walking distance to many things and the local trolly makes getting to Saugatuck and other local areas super easy for older teens who don't have a car. There were plenty of beds, all were very comfortable especially the queen bed in the master bedroom. We would definitely stay here again!

Great cottage! Great location!

This cottage was so nice and in a great location in Douglas. It is a short walk to the beach, and a short drive to downtown Douglas and Saugatuck. The cottage is very well kept up and decorated very nicely! There is so much to do in the area and it is an art lovers delight! The owner is very nice and made our trip enjoyable! We highly recommend and look forward to coming back!

Wonderful girlfriends getaway

The cottage was clean, very well furnished and the owners were prompt to respond to the few questions we had. We loved that they were pet friendly so we could take 8# Cooper with us. And we loved spending our time at the cottage on the screened-in porch. Had a wonderful time.

A perfectly quiet and private spring getaway.

My husband and our Labrador Retriever girl and I loved our stay at Shady Pines cottage. So peaceful and quiet. Lovely neighborhood. Visits to the Douglas Root Beer Barrel, downtown Saugatuck, the Holland Tulip Time Festival, and The Holland Harbor Lighthouse were highlights of our stay. Would love to visit again!

Great month of September 2023 at Shady Pines

Shady Pines in Douglas was a great choice for my month long visit with my dog MichU from California. We enjoyed end of summer and fall weather. Cottage was as advertised and fit our needs nicely. Enjoyed coffee and wine in the screened porch. I had my parents and sister and brother visit at times and the cottage worked great. Could cook in or BBQ or enjoy the great restaurants in the area. Enjoyed our daily walks along Lakeshore Drive and up to the root beer barrel lot into downtown Douglas. And you never grow tired of watching all of the local deer. Greg was easy to work with and provided weekly cleaning and a new Roku set up so I could use all if my existing streaming services. I would highly recommend Shady Pines Cottage.

Adequate

Adequate; neat and tidy. Beds comfortable. Kitchen well equipped. Unseasonably warm for October; screens on porch were set for Winter, so we could not use the space. Upon arrival, code did not work for front door. We were given the emergency code and told to expect a bottle of wine, but the wine never appeared. A block from the Lake when we found the short path. Many lovely deer.

We loved our stay at Shady Pines Cottage

We have stayed in Douglas or surrounding areas on previous trips, and were delightfully pleased with the location and amenities offered at Shady Pines Cottage. You will find that the owner is very responsive. The home upon arrival was spotlessly clean. The washroom appears to be newly remodeled. All of the furniture was very comfortable, including master bed. While we didn't use 2nd bedroom, but it appears it can accommodate 4 kids or 2 adults/2 kids. The kitchen is sufficiently stocked with cookware/serving ware for those who prefer to make their own meals to eat in. One of the features we really enjoyed was the screened in porch with table/stools and casual sitting that look out onto a wooded lot across the way. Surrounding neighborhood areas are very quiet, and location is 2-3 blocks walking distance from the public beach. We definitely hope to stay there again in the future.

Fabulous cottage!

My family and I just returned from a week stay and we're already talking about going back! The cottage was in perfect condition- well stocked and well labeled (we LOVED that!!). The owners definitely take care of this property and the decor and furniture are up to date and CLEAN! Our family loved spending the days in Saugatuck, Douglas, South Haven, and Holland. Each afternoon we packed up and headed to the beach (the beach was a little bit of a walk but worth it!) and after watching the beautiful Lake Michigan sunsets each evening we loved sitting on the screened in porch!! There is no washer and dryer (which the owner informed me of before my arrival) so we just had to be sure to pack enough change of clothes for our family! As said in the other reviews, the kitchen is well stocked if you choose to cook in (but don't miss out on the wonderful restaurants the towns have to offer). They also had games and puzzles and books for indoor family entertainment. We look forward to going back!

The shady pines cottage had everything you could need. Beautiful sun porch. Many tables and seating . More than the 2 of us needed. Fireplace was really beautiful. Clean ,comfortable bed. Plenty of drawers and closets. Dishes, grills, just perfect. And Greg the owner was so helpful and friendly and available to chat anytime. Felt right at home and we will be back again. No need to look anywhere else. No stairs was a nice change from home. The Sutherlands great memories...

Cozy cottage in beautiful area

We have stayed at Shady Pines three years running, in the fall. It’s a cozy house where we feel comfortable and at home. It’s in an area with lots of trees, close to Lake Michigan, and a short drive from downtown Douglas and Saugatuck. The host is great—accommodating, helpful, and easy to contact if you need anything/have questions. Check-in was easy, too. Thanks for another awesome autumnal getaway, Greg!

Second time around

We stayed in Greg’s home this past summer and returned in the fall. It is even more relaxing and spectacular in the autumn season! Everything about this home is perfect! The predawn and dusk deer visits and cute turkey family stroll was just a little extra magic. Our dog loved the nightly walks to see the lake and all the new smells. This is hands-down our Southwest Michigan place!

Restful week at Shady Pines

We had a wonderful vacation at Shady Pines. The neighborhood is quiet and walkable with public beach access. It’s a short drive to other interesting small towns in the area. We especially enjoyed the screen porch. My one suggestion is to provide brighter lighting.

Why they chose this property

While visiting the Douglas and Saugatuck area in the late summer of 2010, friends John, Judy and Greg were driving around checking out the area and specifically this fantastic neighborhood. We weren't really looking to tour any homes, but rather get a sense of the area. However, when we happened upon this cute cottage with the fantastic pine shutters, we were all immediately drawn it. The stars were in alignment and we toured the home the following day and were smitten. While much of the cottage retains it's original 1960's charm, tasteful updates have been made where needed and we welcome your suggestions to make Shady Pines Cottage an even more enjoyable and pleasant place to stay.

What makes this property unique

Simply put - location, location, location! Shady Pines Cottage is located only steps away from pristine Douglas Beach and a short bike ride or drive from world-class Oval Beach. Regardless of what we are doing, walking over to the beach to enjoy the sunset is a must. Also, waking up to the birds chirping or simply enjoying the tranquility of the woods, including deer and fox walking through the front yard, is a nice respite from city living. Being able to leave your car parked and bike or walk around is a great feeling.
