Excellent property in every way!

This gorgeous old home was the perfect base for us to hike and explore the area. Super clean with great attention to detail. Beds were very comfortable and the washer/dryer was a plus. The location was walking distance to town; the property and yard were immaculate. Nathan was an awesome host!

Once I grew accustomed to the size, it was great. It took a conversation with Nathaniel to understand the lower level art showroom. Eager to see entire property.

Great Place to Stay in Raton, NM

The Second Story is a beautiful old home right on the main drag on the south end of Raton. Traffic was a little noisy at times but not much of a distraction. We had the entire second floor that has a sitting room with a great easterly view of the mountains and mesas that that made for wonderful sun and moon rises. Great little restaurants all over town, which you'll need because there is only a small refrigerator and coffee maker. We had a very nice stay and will be back at the Second Story when visiting Raton, NM!

A walk down history

The property is pretty cool and because of it’s built it’s like walking down history. The house is what you see. The steps kinda creek as you go up to the second story but it’s just its authentic feel and vibe. Not gonna lie at first my wife was a bit scared she felt it was kinda creepy but it’s just cause the town is not what we are used to and it’s a bit less habited. The only thing I wish it did have was access to the kitchen. For example if you were doing a long stay y oui may want to cook something. We were just there as passing the night before getting to Colorado for that it was perfect cause we just had coffee and sandwiches in the morning before leaving. Overall I did enjoy it and the first floor is filled with great art.

We adore our fun-loving family of 6!
My lovely wife and I are raising our 3 younger boys out on the prairies of the Wild West, east of Raton 35 miles. I am a designer, a builder, and a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist. I prefer to work in lasting materials, steel and stone are some of my favorites. I enjoy painting, photography, and singing along with my guitar. We are an adventurous bunch, often out road-tripping around the country or galivanting around the ranch that we are so lucky to call home. We have an art gallery in the little town of Des Moines NM. A 1920's service station that we brought back to life from a near-death experience.😂. It is now modern, light, and filled with art! Check it out here: www.PrairiePunkGallery.com
We purchased these amazing historic properties out of foreclosure, vacant, and in disrepair. They had experienced a similar near-death experience which we were able to rescue them from. Through thousands of hours of work and care they have been updated, carefully to retain their original historic charm while offering modern amenities and comforts.
While a project of this scale can rarely be "finished" we hope you will come and enjoy the journey with us. We will continue to update and improve the properties and hope that you find them "a home away from home"

Why they chose this property

Raton is a sleepy little town that feels to be stuck in the past. A welcome reprieve for many visiting from the hustle and bustle of the big cities. It is an eclectic mix of industry, history, and remnants of the Wild West. The setting is beautiful, surrounded by the high mesas and mountains. Outdoor adventure is easy to find as well as solitude. We are experiencing a slow trickle of artistic types moving into town and bringing creativity along with them.

What makes this property unique

We purchased these 3 historic homes (all situated on the same property) vacant and in foreclosure and in desperate need of repair. We have carefully renovated each, hoping to maintain the historic charm while adding modern amenities and comforts. They can be rented together or separately and have beautiful common grounds which are shared by all three listings.
