Description and History :
176 Saint Philip Street – The Aiken-Robinson House
Lot 34, on which this remarkable home is constructed, was part of the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. John Robinson, a hugely successful merchant and ship owner, had built this fine brick and stucco building for his personal residence; he resided here until 1822. In 1825 Mr. Robinson suffered an enormous financial disaster by losing five ships in an Atlantic storm. Among his creditors was William Aiken Sr, renowned railroad and canal builder; in 1826 Mr. Aiken took possession of 176 St. Philip Street.
Designed in the distinctive “Charleston Single House” style, this home boasts a variety of unique and charming architectural features that have contributed to its widespread popularity. The term comes from the structure being a “single” room wide, extending several rooms deep; the narrow side faces the street. Full length piazzas provided ample outdoor living space and shade to keep the house cool in summer. Other characteristics of this style are tall ceilings, large symmetrically arranged windows on the facades and standing seam metal roofs.
This is not a typical short-term rental: It’s not a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, standing seam copper roof, copper guttering, original moldings, plasterwork, old glass windows and solid panel doors exude warmth, character and charm that is exceedingly difficult to achieve in new construction. It’s the real deal!
Saint Philip Square :
Saint Philip Square is an award-winning collection of historic buildings with 17 charming rentals. Each unit offers specific features honoring its unique character. There are no cookie-cutter units, yet we’ve retained the highest standards of Saint Philip Square in design, materials, furnishings and onsite management. In the evening, this oasis sparkles with outdoor lighting, making it the perfect place for nightcaps after a day of exploring.
This protected sanctuary is remarkably accessible to the vibrant King Street scene. Be sure to study the area map to appreciate our prized location. You’re as close as it gets to King Street.
