About the host
Hosted by Laura K. Benton
Mountain Adventure Retreats was founded on a deep-rooted passion for the San Juan Mountains and a shared commitment to excellence in hospitality and property care. The venture began in 2013, sparked by Laura’s long-standing love for Ouray County. A lifelong Coloradan who first discovered the Ridgway and Ouray area in 2001, Laura brought with her an extensive background in business, marketing, and travel management. Her years of experience in the ski and property management industries across North America’s premier destinations provided the foundation for a company built on community and exceptional service.
In 2020, the team expanded when Steve moved from Dallas to join Laura in Ouray County. Steve’s arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company, bringing forty-three years of high-level construction management experience to the team. Having served as Vice President for some of the nation’s top General Contractors, he integrated professional expertise in budgeting, procurement, and project oversight into the company’s property maintenance and caretaking operations. His own connection to the state dates back to 1993, when participating in Ride the Rockies ignited a lifelong passion for Colorado’s dramatic landscapes.
Today, Laura and Steve work side-by-side to lead a dedicated team of professionals focused on delivering top-tier property care. When they aren't overseeing the finer details of a guest's stay or maintaining local residences, they are often found embracing the outdoors together. Whether they are cycling, skiing, hiking, or fishing, they remain inspired by the ever-changing seasons and the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.

Why they chose this property
Nestled in the "Switzerland of America," the neighborhood surrounding the Uncompahgre River offers a serene, high-alpine atmosphere where the sound of rushing water is a constant companion. This area is characterized by a blend of historic charm and rugged natural beauty, with the level Uncompahgre River Walk Loop providing a scenic greenway right at your doorstep. As you stroll through the neighborhood, you’ll find yourself surrounded by towering 13,000-foot peaks, cascading waterfalls, and remnants of the town’s rich mining heritage visible on the slopes of Gold Hill.
The community vibe is relaxed and unpretentious, serving as a peaceful residential pocket that remains remarkably close to the action. A short, ten-minute walk through the neighborhood leads you to the beautifully renovated Ouray Hot Springs Pool and the adjacent Fellin Park, a local hub for recreation and community events. While the setting feels like a secluded mountain escape, you are only minutes away from the vibrant, Victorian-era storefronts of Main Street. Here, the absence of big-box retailers preserves a local feel, replaced by independent breweries, artisan gift shops, and "mom-and-pop" cafes that reflect the authentic spirit of Western Colorado.

What makes this property unique
What truly sets this property apart is its prime positioning as a third-floor end unit, which elevates the guest experience—both literally and figuratively—above the standard valley-floor rental. By sitting at the top of the building, the condo captures a unique sense of privacy and bird’s-eye perspective of the surrounding 13,000-foot peaks that lower units simply cannot match. Because it is an end unit, the living space is flooded with natural light from extra windows, creating a bright, airy atmosphere that complements the high, vaulted ceilings and the expansive architectural loft. This layout allows for a high guest capacity without sacrificing the "mountain lodge" feel, offering a voluminous interior that feels much larger than a traditional two-bedroom layout.
Beyond the walls of the condo, the immediate proximity to the Uncompahgre River provides a sensory experience that defines the stay. Guests are treated to the constant, tranquil soundtrack of rushing water, a natural feature that masks the sounds of the town and enhances the feeling of a secluded retreat. The location is a rare "park-and-walk" gem; you can step out the front door and immediately join the scenic River Walk Loop, which leads on a flat, beautiful ten-minute stroll directly to the Ouray Hot Springs Pool. This combination of a quiet, riverfront sanctuary and effortless walking access to Ouray’s world-class amenities makes the property a standout choice for those who want to experience the "Switzerland of America" without the need for a car.
