We really love the Wine Barrel house! My only issue is that the pots and pans are terrible. We had to TRY to tighten the handles of the pans but they kept coming loose. We cook a lot when enjoying a VRBO and having a well equipped kitchen. The pots and pans there are in bad shape. Otherwise, it's an amazing place!
Overall the place was nice & cozy with a great location. However, there was a large black widow in the kitchen which clearly had not been checked recently. The faucet started leaking steadily in the middle of the night which was annoying as well.
Beautiful views, met our needs, some small hiccups
Overall the property met our needs and made for a lovely weekend getaway. The location and views are excellent, and it is very conveniently located close to Mendocino, and is relatively private.
The house has some rodents living within the ceiling, did not have shampoo/soap when we arrived, has some non-functional lights, and has a combination of very harsh and too-dim lighting. Also, the water heating system is pretty finicky (there are lots of signs about this in the property), and so it can be difficult to dial in for a comfortable shower. The kitchen is pretty well-stocked, and the bed is pretty comfortable.
Overall, it's clear this is a rental property and so there are these sorts of little issues that arise from not investing in resolving these things. I likely wouldn't stay here again, but still enjoyed my time here with my partner.
Very cozy and comfortable. I liked the little fenced in area around the hot tub. There is a beautiful view of Navarro River flowing into the Pacific Ocean. There is a free State beach not far away and many nearby places to hike and explore.
The property was accurately described as one of a kind, truly funky and charming. The view was terrific and the location so peaceful and quiet. Our dog felt at home, which was a huge relief.
Our only suggestions are that there be hooks or something more for clothing and stuff. Otherwise the kitchen had everything we could possibly need and the furniture was comfortable, including the bed.
Not sure why we were asked to wash the towels before leaving. That seemed unusual.
We wil very likely come again!
I stayed at the Wine Barrel for 4 nights with my partner and pup to celebrate my birthday and it was exactly what we needed. The location was really convenient, about 15 min to Mendocino and 30 min to Fort Bragg. It was quiet and the view from the house is just breathtaking. This unique little house had such great amenities. We used the hot tub 2x a day for a morning and evening soak, the kitchen was stocked with all the tools to cook delicious meals, the grill was nice for easy meals and the bed was so comfortable - we all slept so well. I really can't recommend this place enough! I can't wait for my next stay at the Wine Barrel!
The cottage was great, rustic but comfortable long weekend getaway. The views are incredible and we used the hot tub and grill everyday. We would definitely come back.

Nice location, rustic accommodations, not for weak knees
The view was great. The hot tub was nice, although the jets were weak. The "house" was a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, a kitchen and dining area up some rather steep stairs. Do not stay here if you have trouble negotiating stairs! Wasn't the cleanest place we ever stayed in, but it you ask for rustic, that's what you get. For the price, I'll look elsewhere next time.
The property was in pristine condition with a beautiful view overlooking the ocean. Inside of the property was very clean and orderly. The experience felt like an old rustic getaway. I would have to say I’d come back here and day of the week.
This was my favorite stay in Mendocino thus far! Dog friendly + hot tub + grill + views was a MAJOR PLUS! I shared some images on social media and have had over 5 friends ask about this stay!
Very peaceful, and the host was on top of communications!
The Barrel House was wonderful; charming, comfortable, and quiet. We loved the access to the Mendocino Coast as well as the Anderson Valley. The view was amazing. Would definitely stay again!
My husband and I booked this for an anniversary weekend. The setting was amazing, and the space was really cute. We loved the rustic charm of the wine barrel. We would happily stay here again.

The view is wonderful but that’s where it stops
Initially excited to stay in a vintage type of dwelling, but upon first entering the wine barrel the smell of dank, oppressive mustiness was overwhelming. The smell was in our clothes after washing them. The host is kind and responsive, which alleviated my stress and anxiety the first night when I complained of finding a dirty sock in the bed along with unwashed, filthy sheets with sand and hairs all over them. The host profusely apologized and made it a bit better by giving us that night complimentary. There were many moments during the stay that made me question why is this place so expensive if it is less clean than my own home? There were dirty dishes outside, I assume left from a previous guest, there were opened bars of soap and trash not thrown out, there were cobwebs and dead bugs on just about every surface. At night pill bugs crawled on the walls and ceiling. The carpets are probably what’s making the place smell worse, and really need changing out. There was no shampoo or conditioner.
The best things about the place are the location, the view of the Navarro river opening out into the ocean, and the hot tub was awesome! The host left a petite bottle of local Chardonnay that was delicious. I admire the host being professional and responsive quickly when I complained of how filthy and unsettling the sheets were. I just don’t understand how this place can make money off of hospitality when it felt so neglected. I hope the host can make changes for future guests.
The house was quaint and warm (warm as in welcoming), and the atmosphere and environment was beautiful and uplifting. We enjoyed our time here and enjoyed periods of profound relaxation and rejuvenation after a long trip. Thank you for sharing this property with us.
