About this property

Summer Mountain Retreat for the family!

A rare home in this market! Ridgerunner Cabin is nestled beside the Carson National Forest in the Village of Taos Ski Valley. We offer incredible views, a few steps to fly fishing the Rio Hondo, and spacious accommodations that sleeps 10. The property includes an authentic log cabin with an expansive upstairs loft that has been updated to provide comfort, a separate structure that holds a game room, and mountainside privacy.

This is a wonderful place for families to be able to enjoy a home away from home. Whether your intention is for work, school, play, or all of the above, this is the perfect place to relax, let go of today's many stresses, take some fresh breaths out in nature, and enjoy the seasons. You can also feel comfortable knowing that we do have high speed internet available. Rest assured that even while traveling, classes and work can still continue!

After (or even during!) a day in the office or exploring the area, take a dip in the hottub and enjoy the views! Our hot tub is in a wonderful location just steps away from our secluded back porch. From there you are offered some of the most majestic views on earth of the mountains and stars. You will have access to an outdoor firepit as well.

The first floor of the main cabin boasts an open concept kitchen, dining, and living room area, complete with picture windows to take in the gorgeous views of the mountains. The downstairs bathroom also includes a washer and dryer for your convenience. Spread out and lounge in the cozy living room while enjoying a movie on your Direct TV satellite service! There is also a wood-burning stove for those who enjoy a cozy, rustic atmosphere (worry not -- the home has central heat!). During the summer, the Cabin remains cool due to a combination of an altitude of 9200 feet and the river nearby.

Upstairs you will find a spacious loft that accommodates two queen beds, two twin daybeds, a sitting table, and second bathroom. Expansive windows also allow you to take in the scenery while relaxing. The kids can take over the loft and play a round of scrabble while you unwind downstairs!

The detached gameroom holds two twin beds, a fold out futon, a foosball table and dartboard! If not for use as an extended kids room or game room, it can also serve as a private music room or writer's shack:) there is no bathroom in this detached, separate structure! This home is available for your ski vacation or mountain getaway, and long-term guests are also welcomed at affordable rates.

Venturing out into the world of this all-season mountain resort is also a pleasure from the cabin. We are located about a half mile from the ski resort at Taos Ski Valley. At the entrance to the resort, you have easy access to a full array of shops and restaurants. Enjoy fine dining at the Bavarian, St. Bernard or Edelweiss or, sink your teeth into to the famous burgers and green chile stew at the Stray Dog. Taos is known for world class skiing, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking and snowshoeing.

As we all know, these are unprecedented times. As such, we are doing our best to ensure that our guests have the best possible experience while staying at Ridgerunner Cabin. We want to emphasize how the Cabin can be a self-contained experience that allows for our guests to experience the wonders of nature while still having the comforts of home. There are hiking trails within the valley for your family to enjoy, as well as snowshoeing possibilities in the immediate vicinity of the cabin.

Please let us know if you are planning on bringing your pet (dogs only unless approved by the owner). It is an additional $35/night, with a limit of 2 dogs. For more than 2 dogs there will be an extra charge of $5/night per dog.

*We do have a part-time onsite caretaker living in the smaller cabin. We kindly ask that the caretaker's privacy is respected, and any questions be directed first to your host.

Beat the Heat getaway!

Very nice one week stay in the mountains for this hot, Houston family! We loved the cabin and Mom could stay for weeks if she could. Hot tub was clean and soooo nice to enjoy. Kids enjoyed their beds and Mom loved cooking in the cabin kitchen. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Best Cabin around Taos

The cabin was so cute and cozy! There were plenty of beds and space for people to pick where they wanted to sleep. There were a few games and a tv for entertainment. We spent cold nights in the hot tub right outside the master bedroom. The cabin was about 5 min from the ski resort making it super easy to load up and drive down. We had a blast here and would absolutely come back!

Decent spot, little rustic but great setting

My wife and I did a quick trip for a few days to Taos and found this cabin online. The booking process was quick and seamless. The caretaker was available when we needed assistance with the cabin. The location is up the ski valley about 15 minutes from Taos (about 9-10K elevation) and we lost power (the entire ski valley lost power) and I imagine this would be a frequent occurrence given the location. Keep in mind, cell service is spotty and there is no Wi-Fi which is unfortunate. There is no outdoor grill and the kitchen is VERY basic. No dishwasher. If you want to cook out, you have small weber charcoal grille outside on front patio. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay. If we do it again, we will pack more groceries and be prepared to stay close to the cabin as the travel to Taos for a good meal is a hassle. The ski village is closer (about 5-7 minutes) but doesn't have much for food that we noticed. Sarbosa is a good restaurant though and would suggest. The cabin sits right on the highway (150) and if you have pets/kids, gotta keep an eye on them. No hiking trails on the premises and you need to walk/drive to nearest trails. I would suggest the Bavarian Restaurant which was very neat up the Twining Road near the base of the mountain. Hot tub outside was very nice after a long hike. Basically, good spot for the price, but don't expect luxury. A very middle of the road accommodation deep in the woods.

Great summer retreat at Taos Ski Valley

Our family of 6 was very comfortable at Ridgerunner cabin. It was the perfect base for exploring the ski valley's hiking and biking trails and venturing into Taos and Arroyo Seco. There was more than enough room for the 6 and the house was stocked with everything we needed in the kitchen, plenty of towels and amenities in the bathrooms and enough blankets for everyone. The cabin is a fantastic structure and we enjoyed the warm days and cold nights - we slept with the windows open. The yard was great and the hot tub was very appreciated. My kids played on the foosball table in the game room but all opted to sleep upstairs in the loft. The interior of the cabin needs updating: the downstairs shower door was broken and the enclosure leaked at the edges, the showerhead upstairs was broken, the washing machine was moldy (I tried to wipe the mold out of it before I washed a load of laundry but my clothes came out stinky so we did laundry elsewhere), there were cobwebs inside and out, a broken living room chair, burned out lightbulbs, a broken oscillating fan, peeling paint on bathroom vanity, and weatherstripping falling off the front door were the major issues I noticed.

Alpine magic for a family

We were looking for a family escape from the summer heat, and found a perfect experience at the Ridgerunner. The property is beautiful and accurately reflected by the online photos from the cabin itself to the surrounding area (Deer! Rabbits! Running stream just across the road!) The views are superb and the stargazing from the balcony is exceptional. Bring a telescope if you have one! You’re only about a 1-2 minute drive from the ski village. It’s perfect for a family with kids- upstairs loft has two beds (could sleep 4 easily in the beds and 2 more if they sleep on the window seats), a full bathroom and table perfect for kids to hangout, play games, read, and stargaze. Downstairs has a king bedroom, full bath/laundary room and very cozy sitting area with a great tv/media setup. The kitchen is well appointed. The “game house” has two more beds and a foosball table. It was a great place hang out with the kids while parents were cooking/having quiet time. Of all the thoughtful amenities (games, umbrellas, hot tub, deck chairs, toiletries) we appreciated the child/pet gate the most to keep our toddler off the stairs. We slept with screened windows open and temps were perfect. Summer dining is limited in the ski valley area so we bought groceries in Taos before heading up to the cabin and cooked most meals. But we did try Rhodas at the ski resort for dinner and it was fairly standard (but good) burgers/soups/salads/pasta. Lunch at the Bavarian one day before going up the ski lift was fun (brats, pretzels). Arroyo Seco is ten minutes down the mountain and has great ice cream (Taos Cow) and a good if somewhat pricey restaurant called Aceq. Pizza at Pizano’s (20 minutes back toward Taos) was excellent. Taos center is about 25-30 minutes away with tons of shops and restaurants. Most of the hikes on the mountain are best for older kids or those small enough to be in a backpack. The hike to Miller Lake is beautiful. We drove 45 minutes west to the La Vista Verde hike along the Rio Grande Gorge. Definitely worth it and more accessible for younger kids (2.3 mile round trip, mostly flat but still really interesting terrain, incredible vistas, more oxygen!!) The owners and caretaker were very kind, prompt and helpful. We would book here again in a heartbeat!!

Excellent Location & Nice get-away

We had a nice stay at this cabin with our 2 kids and dog. The location was really nice & the weather was near perfect. All the neighboring towns are quite nice and a lot of restaurants offering pick-up or outdoor dining due to COVID. The cabin was roomy & rustic. Comfortable beds and living spaces.

Absolutely Awful

I would like to give a better review but I am unable to based on our experience. We had trouble finding the cabin and attempted to call the number, on the email, and left a message. I received a return txt 36 hours later. Luckily after we had found the cabin. Upon arrival the cabin was clean but smelled of moth balls. It appeared as if it had not been used in a while. The hot tub was warm but would not heat up enough to get into. Again could not reach the caretaker. We then had TICKS!!! 5 of the 8 of us had ticks on us!!! We slept in the car the second night after finding the ticks.... we have attempted to resolve the issue with the caretaker and have not had a return email since! We will absolutely NEVER return to this cabin! Completely unacceptable!

The rustic cabin was great.

There were little issues to deal with, like the prior tenant's garbage was still there when we arrived and there was no hot water in the upstairs bathroom sink, but that was easy to overlook considering the great location, the beauty of the rustic cabin, the hot tub. I plan to return!

Dirty, Dirty, Dirty, but great location.

We arrived at the cabin after our arrival time - and it was not ready at all - dirty and not made ready for the us - dirty sheets, trash, towels etc. I immediately called the number I had for problems . No one answered ,it went straight to voice mail - which was full . I called at least twice if not three times - frantic. My son in-law called from the cabin phone and amazing - she picked up. She apologized and then texted me saying they were on their way up and could we enjoy dinner out. We had planned to eat there and had a dog - so it was not convenient to do so, but we tried. NO place in the ski valley allows dogs - we went by Stray Dog, the Pizza restaurant and St. Bernards - no luck. We ended up ordering a pizza and eating it by the fire pit outside at the base. It was cold so we returned - they were still working on the main cabin. They left shortly after they left, I was texted about clean towels in the dryer, They had been washed with the same towels used to sort of clean the cabin. I complained and re-washed them. The towels were what we call dog towels or boat towels - tattered - we picked out a few - and I threw the rest back in the laundry basket. She did offer a credit for one day for all the problems. Throughout the week, we encountered more dirty dishes, mice droppings, a very very hard master bed, dirty sheets upstairs, fixtures with lightbulbs out, cabinet hardware broke and a downstairs bathroom that was filthy. There was a bowl that I thought was an insulated bowl, that I rinsed it and used it, to find out when I washed it in hot water - it had food in it and it was just stuck to the other bowl - I was almost sick!!! We washed every single item we used in the kitchen. The kitchen is NOT well stocked. I was glad I brought my electric griddle. Ok, the good things, awesome view, a wood stove, a great table to play games and eat, and only a mile a way from the lift. The snow and skiing was awesome! My husband did offer to relocate us to another location, but I was unsure how we would have accomplished that, We had traveled from the. Dallas area to come in to a dirty cabin, I honestly had a meltdown. I will not be staying there again, and I will make sure that a take each review that I read seriously.

Wonderful Time in Ski Country!

Just completed my stay at the Ridge Runner Cabin and could not be happier! The cabin is only 1/2 mile from the slopes and is the first house as you head down the mountain. The house was amazingly toasty as the heating system was top notch. We woke up to a sauna after the first evening but then set the thermostat to 62 for a more comfortable setting which is a first. I usually like the setting at 68 - 70. The hot tub was perfect for 4 people and made for a relaxing finish to a day of skiing. We also enjoyed the wood burning stove and DirecTV. I look forward to a return trip with my family!

a GREAT rustic retreat

We would do this again. Like tomorrow. If you're looking for a very quiet mountainside retreat for reading, playing games, and resting from skiing (Taos Ski Valley is about 0.6 mile up the road), look no further. Our family of five ("kids" 18, 20, and 21) easily fit into the main cabin, with a large private king master and ample loft. The wood-fired stove supplemented the good heating against -8 degree temperatures. The outside cabins are a bit sparse, but add capacity, one with a foosball table and no bed, and the other with, I think, a single bed (we didn't look too closely there). The design of the main cabin is beautiful. A classic log cabin with very elegant layout and design. It's built to be very tight against wind and weather. The only drawback was a couple of beams that could cause problems for any guests 6'4" -- walking around the house, tall guys have to have their "radar" on. Maybe the living area near the TV could have more seating, too. Just a single couch. The latter two points are very minor, even trivial, "critic's notes." We all agreed that we would go back to this fine, relaxing cabin in a minute.

Cabin was old, dusty and smelled of moth balls.

Cabin is not what it looks like on the net. It is old and rundown. The owner should have included the problems with altitude before making reservations. The parking area was very icy and needed to be salted or at least a mat for better footing. Not at all impressed.

Great getaway!

The house is great for a family, with space for the kids to be upstairs and adults to be downstairs or on the deck. I'd find it difficult to have too many guests (we had just 2 kids with us), especially if you wanted privacy. The whole house is open except for the master, and the hot tub is off that room - so you do hear everything going on. There are 2 queens upstairs, and the master is a king. The game "cabin" is available, and is the smaller "cabin" - with one twin bed. It'd be good if you wanted some quiet time to read peacefully, but I wouldn't want my kid to sleep there alone - I think it'd be scary for them. Nonetheless, it's a nice little nook. There were plenty of towels and kitchen necessities, and it was very clean and well stocked. We spent a lot of time at the kitchen table, with the windows looking over the trees and deck. Be sure to take some umbrella type chairs with you to enjoy the deck. Unfortunately, because of the extended lack of rain, the Carson was closed to us, however, I am positive when it comes back to life with some constant rain, the trees will be brilliant. The Hondo is directly across the street, and you can hear it all day and night. We saw plenty of deer, birds, and even a baby bear cub on the property (glad I didn't see the mama!). It's very close to the resort, which is beautiful. The only negative I had, and this is to be expected in a house in the woods where you sleep with the windows open (no screens) is that the bugs were your constant companion. I don't mind june bugs or moths, or even spiders, but I didn't like the gigantic ants. My 9YO and I just had to pretend that they didn't exist. Lastly, when you travel between Taos and the cabin, there's a great little community called Arroyo Seco and it's is lovely! The people are kind, the art and food is wonderful, and it's a quirky little place to wander around. There's two large grocery stores in town, about a 20+ minute drive. We did have wifi available (thanks, John!), but cell service was pretty much null. I had some service, my husband had none, and we are both on Sprint. Apparently, Taos (proper) and Sprint are not friends. We appreciated that we were felt welcomed in the house, and really loved our time unwinding and appreciating all the beauty. Enjoy your stay - we did!

It was a great weekend getaway.

The cabin was nice. Kids loved it. The water pressure was not the best as others mentioned but still enough to get clean. Wish we could have stayed longer. I bet it is amazing in winter. Owner/property manager was easy to work with. A downfall is not a whole lot to do in summer at the ski lodge so we drove to Red River and Eagles Nest which was still a good drive. But that was poor planning on my part. I would love to stay there again. We over packed stuff and they had almost everything we needed.

Cozy, rustic, and great location

We stayed here in the beginning of June on our first trip to NM and we loved it! The pros: The cabin and extra buildings had soo much room. Well stocked and tidy. The look and feel of the cabin was exactly what we were looking for. Very authentic “cabin in the woods” type of aesthetic. The hot tub and front/back decks were nice to sit on for morning coffee and to listen to the nearby creek and sounds of nature. There are no close neighbors, so it’s a very private, secluded feel which we LOVED. The fire pit and many trees behind the cabin are great for outdoor lounging day or night. The location is PERFECT if you’re in the area for hiking like we were. Multiple trail heads are within a 2-3 mile range from the cabin. The towns of Arroyo Seco and Taos are less than 30 minutes away and the drive there is beautiful. The cons: There is no patio furniture, so you might want to bring lawn chairs(luckily we did). Being from Oklahoma, we didn’t realize that the cabin doesn’t have a central air conditioning unit until we got there, and it did get hot at night unless we left the windows open. The only downside to leaving the windows open was that many of them didn’t have screens on them, so bugs and moths came in a lot. Didn’t bother us so much as we love camping and being outdoors anyway. The cabin is also RIGHT on the main road, which was a tad off putting at first, but not too terrible. Overall, we loved this cabin, what it had to offer and where it was located. We will definitely be back in summers to come to experience the calming nature of Taos Ski Valley!
