We had a short stay over the 4th of July. Everything was as expected. For an “off grid” cabin it felt like a home with all amenities working. The view from the cabin was better than in the pictures. Access to town and local things to do was great!

Well Kept and Loved
We had a great time staying with our young family of 4 plus a dog. Plenty of room to roam and have quiet time or time together as a family. Great to have time off the grid in a beautiful setting.

Neighbors ruined my weekend
It a beautiful place! The cabin is a loooooong ways from the water and there was not really a dock to use. If you just wanna read a book and look at the lake it perfect. Anything else I would look around some more. Not even gonna talk about the neighbors!!!
Response from VrboOwner on 19 March 2020
Dear Bob!
Thank you for your feedback. Much appreciated.
Very sorry that part of your cabin experince was unpleasant. I now know who the neighbor is and have spoken with him about it at length. He was told about a potentially terminal illness and was crabbier than usual last summer. My apologies.
As far as dockage we simply not need one since we own just over half of the protected harbor and up to three boats can tie right up and step onto shore.
I cannot change the distance to the water and it is a 3-6 minute walk or a 1-2 minute drive. To some it is too far. To others it is a perfect distance to gain maximum privacy.
Thank you again for visiting our lakehome last summer.

This is a really beautiful property, where you feel almost like you are in a tree house in the top of the pines and jutting out almost over the lake! The views are stunning and the property was very clean and pretty much as presented.
The downside of the property is that it is very, very remote and down a very bumpy, slow, curvy, hilly, gravel road. We came in after a rain storm and almost got stuck without four wheel drive, which I would highly recommend. The listing also showed wireless internet when we booked but found out through another review that it wasn't available, so I believe was removed from the listing. Cell connections to Canadian towers were not reliable. Again, it's a remarkable property but potential renters should have a pretty good idea about its remoteness.
What a pleasure this home is. Completely self sustaining with views that leave you in awe. Everything you need is here. We were apprehensive about being completely off the grid but with having Grand Marais close by it ended up being a pleasant thing. No interruptions or distractions to our.family time. Thank you again to the owners for sharing your home.
For being an “off the grid” home, it sure didn’t feel like off the grid living! The windows in the living room made the most amazing views all day and night. Sip your coffee and watch the sunrise listening to the loons, or watching the stars while sitting around the campfire! We saw more shooting stars and satellites in a week than we have in the last 5 years! It was amazing!! We had an amazing time fishing, lots of fish and not a single person on the lake each time. It was peaceful and beautiful. Over all amazing time, we will be back! We highly recommend staying here!

Amazing views
We had a peaceful and relaxing week at this off-the-grid cabin. You never get tired of the view - it is beautiful everyday. The cabin is extremely well equipped and the layout is really smart. The thoughtful details makes it easy to feel at home and to relax. Be prepared for no internet - there is no wifi. There is cell service from Canada. You will truly be unplugged. The access to the lake is great for a kayak or paddle board and the public boat access isn't too far away. Large driveway is super convenient for parking the truck, boat and trailer. The dirt road back to the cabin is very bumpy and can feel long after a few trips back and forth to get to 61 for day trips. It's not bad - just something to be prepared for. We enjoyed our stay and had a great vacation.

A Gem
How fortunate we were to find this very special property! It is homey, comfy and offers a spectacular view—it’s almost as if you are in a treehouse.
The home is immaculate, and the owners have thought through the details. The kitchen is a dream—well appointed with many incidentals included.
We arrived on an unexpectedly chilly day in September and were delighted to find how quickly the heat kicked in. We really appreciated the hydronic heat.
The property is tucked in the wilderness and is ideal for those seeking silence. We came face to face with a young bull moose on one of our treks in—spectacular!
We can only imagine how beautiful the views are in winter and summer. We would love to return one day.
We should mention that the owners were very responsive and allowed us to shift our dates at the last minute. So happy they were able to accommodate us!

Even nicer than the photos
My wife and I and out dog spent 6 nights here in early May. It was a late spring, so the lake was iced over when we arrived and open when we left--watching the ice go out was very interesting. Two other couples joined us for a couple nights and they also gave it highest ratings.
The great room is large and bright. With seating, dining and kitchen all one large space there was plenty of room to spread out. The deck shares the same great view and is big enough for a large party to enjoy. The kitchen is well outfitted with all the pots, pans, utensils, and other kitchen tools needed.
The bedrooms were cozy, but everything necessary for comfort. The beds were very comfortable and everything was spotlessly clean. The only possible shortcoming is with a single bathroom there could be long waits if people aren't efficient in their habits.
The property has a lot of open space and walks to the beach or along the entry road are pleasant, although we were there before the bugs showed up. The high location catches breezes from most directions and should keep the bugs low at least during the day. Can't say much about beach or water recreation, since as I mentioned in the beginning, the lake was going through ice out.
The trip into Grand Marais is about 35 minutes and the roads are easy to travel, although the last mile to the cabin is a bit rough, any car but a low rider can handle it. 3G cell coverage is reliable from Canada, and minimal 4G US coverage can usually be found just a few minutes walk or 90 second drive away.
In summary, a clean, comfortable, spacious and well equipped remote cabin--the best we've stayed at.

Beautiful house with great views
Susie and Darrell’s house was perfect for our fall getaway. The house is clean and comfortable and is oriented to take advantage of its stunning view of Greenwood Lake. If you rise early, the view of the sun rising across the lake is spectacular.
If you’re looking for seclusion within striking distance of Grand Marais, it would be hard to do better.

Stunning view!
This comfortable house perched above Greenwood Lake has a stunning view of the lake and its islands from the deck and the huge windows. Greenwood Lake is beautiful and very quiet with only the occasional fishing boat (and once, a seaplane!). There are very few visible houses. We enjoyed canoeing and fit 2 medium adults and one small adult and dog into the canoe (there is no kayak). The beach is wonderful. The downstairs bedroom has a very comfortable memory foam bed, and there were no issues with gas smell from the garage. The kitchen is well-equipped. Communicating with the owners took a little persistence but they did respond eventually.

Beautiful Cabin with Some Challenges
The cabin offered amazing views of the lake, the northern lights, sheets of rain and billowing mist. Amazing. The hummingbirds, trying to stay warm, were busy at the feeder. The communal space upstairs was fantastic for our 7-person retreat, the hiking in the area beautiful.
The challenges:
First, fumes from the garage (where six snowmobiles are tucked in for the season) permeated the downstairs bedroom, which was usable only with closed door, the window open and heat off--which, fortunately, one of us did not mind even though the nights were in the low forties. One of the upstairs bedrooms, situated above the garage, also smelled of the fumes on occasion: a health risk and serious drawback to a very beautiful space. Maybe this is a seasonal issue only--but it was very noticeable and unpleasant.
Second, with seven of us, all very eager to use as little energy and water as possible, hot water supplies in the shower did not last through the rainy weekend. Brisk temperature and very low water pressure.

Thank you for your review. You were our first spring guest and I'm afraid I forgot to turn the water heater off of vacation mode. We could have easily solved that concern and wish you would have phoned. There were two "new" snowmobiles added to storage and perhaps one leaked. I apologize and again that will be taken care of. With the additional toys we have acquired we are adding a storage area separate from the garage.
Our guests experience is very important to us. I hope we have the opportunity to host you and your friends again.
Sincerely;
Darrell and Susie

Perfect getaway!
My husband and I decided last minute to take a quick trip up the shore for a mini moon after our wedding. This property looked perfect and we were so glad that they accepted our two dogs. Upon arrival we could not believe how beautiful the cabin truly was. The owners were such kind people as well. I would absolutely recommend taking a vacation here!

Greenwood Lake Cabin, Grand Marais
We were very pleased with our stay. The cabin is well taken care of and we had no problems at all. The bonfires were awesome and we had fun fishing on the lake (brought our own boat). Our week stay was quite misty but when it cleared, the view of the lake was amazing! I always received prompt responses if I had questions before our stay and it was very easy to get ahold of the owners during our stay if necessary. Thank you for a great family trip!

Awesome Retreat
Spent a long weekend here for 23rd annual gals' trip. After finding our first rental home double-booked, owners Susie and Darrell were kind enough to let us stay in their lovely and very comfortable home overlooking Greenwood Lake and keep in touch to make sure all was OK. The house is nicely furnished and clean. And, the views are spectacular! Days spent touring and hiking, nights by the fire ring under the harvest moon. We will definitely consider a return visit!

About the host
Hosted by Darrell or Susie Splett
Hi, we are Darrell and Susie. Susie has five generations of family history in Grand Marais, with connections to Greenwood Lake starting in the 1930s. We currently live in Thunder Bay, Ontario, which is just a short drive from Grand Marais.
Fishing, riding our four-wheelers, and snowmobiling in the winter bring us joy. We also enjoy playing games and putting puzzles together on our designated puzzle table. In the summer, we relax on the deck and by the beach. No trip to the cabin would be complete without a campfire! We built the fire ring extra wide for safety.
When designing the cabin, our main concept was centered around family, and we feel we were very successful in that effort!
Why they chose this property
The Brazell family has had property on Greenwood Lake since the early 1930's. This property has been in our family for years. My husband and I dreamed of building on 'The Mountain' and our dream came true.
What makes this property unique
The mountain top location is private and beautiful.
