Who wouldn't love a campfire on the expansive rocky beach while gathering the perfect rock souvenirs?
Guests can relax in the three season room with a card table that has a top that flips to a dining table. Two doors lead to the river-side deck/grill and the covered back porch.
An unforgettable place to gather is the cozy living room by the wood-burning fireplace (recently redone with some of the rocks from the property's shoreline).
You can return on a cold day and sit fireside to watch the legendary gales of Lake Superior.
A dining area seats six guests; there are plenty of dish and glasswares for young and old.

About this property

Lakefront retreat w/ river; wood fireplace/hot tub

Let this magical property be your place to unwind; a Lake Superior waterfront home that is bordered by a designated trout stream. The interior of the home is rustic and comfortable. You will be surrounded by wood and windows that bring focus to the beautiful force of nature that surrounds you. There is strong wifi too!

Location:
✦ 14 miles to Devil's Kettle hike
✦ 18 miles to Grand Marais
✦ 18 miles to Isle Royale ferry
✦ 22 miles to the trail to High Falls
✦ 35 miles to Lutsen

This entire historical 3 acre property is available for guests. If you walk down the road, you will find the Hovland Dock. This vintage commercial concrete dock was built in 1905 and brought passengers and cargo from Duluth before there were roads; passengers would then walk to this property where a boarding house and store stood. This property was settled by Ole Brunes and Hovland was named after his place of origin in Norway.

On the property you can walk the trails, skip rocks, enjoy the outdoor fire pit and a seasonal wood-fired hot tub (available June 1st 2024). Anglers can fish in the designated trout stream. Adventure seekers can launch your own SUP or canoe on a calm day, or even wade in the river or lake for a chilly swim.

There is a studio cabin on a private end of the property that shares this driveway; this cabin has its own parking and shoreline and can sleep four additional guests if rented separately, please inquire about the availability of this seasonal cabin.

The second floor of the home has a spacious primary bedroom with french doors that open to a lake front balcony. An additional bedroom on the second floor has a queen bed and a loft; the loft can sleep one adult or two children. On the first level is a comfortable bedroom with a king bed. Each floor has a bathroom with shower.

Relax in the living room next to the wood-burning fireplace and watch the massive ships go by. The ultimate place to dine, or play games, is in the three season room where you are surrounded by the beautiful lake and river views/sounds.

Enjoy the grill on the deck and a fully stocked kitchen to whip up an amazing dinner. If you want to venture out for a meal we will recommend amazing Cook County restaurants in Grand Marais, down the GunFlint Trail or at the magical dining room of the Naniboujou Lodge (less than 5 miles away).

☆ We require guests to sign a rental agreement which will be sent after booking. This agreement must be read, signed and returned within 48 hours or cancellation for a full refund can be requested within 48 hours.

☆ Up to two dogs are allowed on the property with prior approval. There will be a one time fee of $50 for pets. Rules regarding pets are stated in the rental agreement.

☆ We hope you can enjoy the outdoor hot tub! Because we are near two bodies of water, we chose a natural wood-fired hot tub that does not contain chemicals and can be safely drained. If guests chose to use this amenity, they will fill the tub and then start a fire to get to the optimal temperature. The first preparation will take some effort, but the resulting experience of soaking under the starts, next to the lake, is truly magical. It will be available after June 1st 2024 and then mostly year-round

☆ No more than eight guests on the property and no parties/events without approval.

☆ Children must be monitored closely. The shore line of the lake and river and hot tub are not fenced.

☆ Our water does go through UV and triple filtration, but drinking water will be supplied to comply with the Cook County regulations regarding homes that draw water from Lake Superior.

☆ We are a cabin in the forest and next to two bodies of water. While we do have pest control monitor our home, there are mosquitos and flies in the summer so bringing bug spray is recommended. The area is home to moose, wolves, bears, otters, deer, fox and coyotes; please respect the wildlife.

Spectacular experience
If you’re looking for a relaxing experience up the north shore, look no more! Truly, our family needed a place to congregate since most of us live out of state and it was very accommodating. It has all the bells and whistles in the kitchen from sharp fabulous knives to a Darth Vader toaster…lol. The enclosed porch has a game table to a sofa that faces Lake Superior. Every night we enjoyed chatting by the fire place with enough room for all 7 of us. They have views from every aspect of their adorable cabin. When I tell you we were pleasantly surprised when we entered our code to enter the “barn” looking cabin is an understatement. Decorated very lovely and so very relaxing. Thank you for a wonderful experience, and we hope to return again.

What makes this property unique

This is a beautiful retreat with a lot of history. If you walk down the road, you will find the Hovland Dock. There is no air-conditioning in the cabin. The provided fans, and the cool Lake breeze, are almost always enough to stay cool.
