About this property
Historic Guesthouse in Downtown Laurel
Stay in the Guest House of a Laurel home on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1909, the main house, Carriage House, and Guest House boast Mediterranean architecture on the City Beautiful's loveliest avenue. The newly renovated Guest House overlooks the back garden with its own gated entrance. Enjoy the private garden from two porch swings. Walk past some of HGTV’s Hometown houses to Laurel’s historic downtown or Lauren Rogers Museum of Art — both a block away.
The space
The Guest House is a stand-alone house behind the main house, separated by a garden. The garden can be explored or enjoyed from 2 porch swings. The entire estate is enclosed by lattice and iron fences. The house is of historic construction with heart-pine floors, high ceiling, and clay tile roof. It is a miniature of the main house, with a porch and four rooms: foyer, living room/kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. The living room and kitchen have nothing but outside shutters to filter the sunlight coming through three 6 1/2-foot-tall windows, making it look like lace. The antique and vintage living room furniture is perfect for afternoon tea. Enjoy the fully-outfitted kitchen and eating at the J. Parker table.
The bedroom is extra comfy with a queen adjustable bed and memory foam mattress. There is also a twin bed in the same room. Extra pillows and blankets in the closet. A walk-in closet provides plenty of space for hang-up clothes and suitcase. The antique furnishings and Victorian lamp feel like “home.” The triple-baffle blinds and to-the-floor curtains make this room snuggly; they can block out all light or let the light flood in! The sound of the fountain outside can be heard when all is quiet. The TV streams Sling TV, Amazon Prime, Brit Box, Masterpiece Theater and various other channels for after a long day of touring.
The bathroom is state-of-the-art European style. Ladies, nothing says “relax” like a bath in the footed slipper tub, then drying off with a towel from the towel warmer! The slipper tub is also convenient for bathing little ones with its hand-shower feature. The glass and tile shower (with handicap bar) was built with tall people in mind, sporting a 7-foot-tall shower head as well as hand shower. A front-load washer and dryer is there for your convenience; detergent provided. The remodeling of this house was completed in 2021.
Other things to note
There are 5 steps with no hand rail you must be able to walk up between the iron gate and the lattice gate. Additionally, there are 2 steps to get upon the porch and 3 steps into the house - both with hand rails.
Under no circumstances will pets or smoking be acceptable anywhere on the property. We have our own Samwise the bunny who hops around the garden freely, and my family is allergic to dog/cat hair and smoke. So please allow us to offer others a smoke-free, allergen free environment. We also do not allow parties, professional photo shoots, or any illegal activity on the property.
If you are expecting guests not registered on the rental agreement, please check with me first. An infant in addition to 3 registered guests is usually okay, but please let me know when making the reservation so I can provide what is needed.
When planning your trip, please note that many businesses and almost all eating places downtown are closed on Mondays. I have a studio apartment next door that sleeps 2 if your party is too large for the Guest House. Contact me to see if it is available.

About the host
Hosted by Dawn Marcellino
Hi, I'm Dawn. Though my husband is from Los Angeles and I am from Louisiana, we have lived and reared our 7 children in Laurel for over 30 years. We live in a historic house built by one of the founders of the town for their daughter. We would love to share the beauty of this historic estate and garden with you.
Why they chose this property
We live on the most beautiful street in America's "Hometown," only one block from the first art museum in the state of Mississippi, Lauren Rogers Museum of Art.
What makes this property unique
Built in 1909 and on the National Registry of Historic Places, the Main House and Guesthouse are of unique construction in the piney woods. These buildings are built of solid rebarred concrete, poured one wheelbarrow at a time. The roof is hand moulded clay tile. The architecture is Mediterranean. The Guesthouse is furnished in keeping with its historicity, with the added advantage of a luxurious bathroom.
