About this property

Charming Horse Farm Country Cottage on Rolling Hills

This guest house is at the center of our 30 acre Gentlemen's ranch, one mile south of Suttons Bay and 1/2 mile from the Bay. The address for our location is 1624 South West Bayshore Drive (which is M-22), Suttons Bay While there is not a water view unless you are on top one of our hills, the setting is an idyllic location with panoramic valley and hill views. This house has a warm natural all wood interior with beautiful artwork, yet all the modern amenities such as wifi and satellite TV with multiple movie channels.
The grounds are professionally landscaped and maintained by the Landscape Architect owner.
There is a large open area that includes a wrap-around leather couch and a loft with two beds along with a separate bedroom with a queen-size bed with an exceptional quality mattress. It is important to note that the only access to the loft is a straight up and down ladder. Because of this if you have kids younger than five or adults older than 40 or so (depending how spry you feel) the loft is probably not for you.
There is plenty of room to park any toys (campers, boats, trailers) right on the property. The owners have a 26 foot motorboat and other water toys, so arrangements could be made for their use. If there is a need to stall your horses, or if you want to ride a horse or two, those arrangements can be made as well.
On the property is a large barn, a small barn (both for horses) along with indoor and outdoor riding arenas. Attached to the indoor riding arena is a viewing area with a pool table, bathroom and laundry.
At night, there is a firepit area to warm up on the cold Northern Michigan nights and we are far enough away from any city so that the panoramic star views are incredible.
We are only 1/2 mile away from the Suttons Bay to Traverse City trail and you could ride bikes/horses snowshoe/hike/cross-country ski in any direction from here and see wonderful water vistas and orchard/hill/valley views.
We are 30 minutes away from the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and the Homestead Resort that has skiing with hills that border on Lake Michigan.

Our family stayed in this great little guest home on a horse farm for our niece's wedding close by. Couldn't have been a better spot for us. Our teenaged boys loved the loft and the grounds were beautiful to take a stroll around when we had a free minute. Host was awesome to deal with and everything was as advertised. We will be back when we visit the area again and hope this rental is available.

Very nice, clean and comfortable accommodations! It was our second time at this location and both were wonderful! Location was perfect for us to cross country ski and visit wineries. We would recommend this property for anyone staying in the Suttons Bay area!

Amazing!

This honestly is the best vrbo we’ve stayed in…absolutely beautiful property, clean and comfortable house, quiet setting, friendly and helpful owners. We loved the location…close enough to Traverse City for when we had to be there but far enough away to avoid the crowds and traffic. We would love to return!

Cozy guest house, 2 minutes.from town.

The guest house was perfect for two people. It was a quick 2 minute drive to town. We hadnt gotten any instructions for entry to the guesthouse since the owners were away, but the horse care takers were so nice and friendly, they showed us around and got us settled in. We loved the horses and the cats. And we had the most beautiful view of the Northern lights the 1st night. We would love to stay again. ininstructionson entry gotten any instructions o entry but

Great place to stay in the Traverse City/Suttons Bay area!

The owners are delightful people! The home is very cute and cozy. It had everything we needed! We are avid cyclists and wanted to hit the local trails and the property is very close to the trail which goes from Sutton's Bay to Traverse City. (Leelanau Trail). We LOVED the location of this properyt as it's easy to get to for visiting all the sights in the area. The owners recommended the best places to eat and were super nice! We'll definitely come again if we are in the area! Thanks! :)

Lovely family vacation

We had the most enjoyable stay at this rental. Having 3 small kids makes every vacation an adventure but this rental was able to handle us! It had just what we needed for a most enjoyable week. Debbie and Jeff were very responsive and made sure we had just what we needed. When the shower head had issues- a new, even better shower head was placed! My kids were mesmerized by the horses and were even able to arrange with Debbie for a ride which will be a special memory from this vacation. The location was great, minutes from grocery, restaurants and beaches! It wasn’t the most typical vacation (nothing in 2020 is typical) but it was a wonderful retreat from reality!

Early fall in northern Michigan

We had a great time at this location. It was easy to find, right on the main road along Grand Traverse Bay. The property is a working horse farm and landscape business, so there is equipment and plants around. Beautiful horses grazing in the fields is a plus. The guest house is a beautifully rustic northern Michigan retreat. Lots of wood in all rooms. The loft was somewhat difficult to get to, by way of a ladder, straight up the wall. My only complaint would be with the shower. It had low water pressure and was lukewarm. Overall, it is a great property and we will consider it as a place to stay on a future visit to the Leelanau area.

Absolutely AMAZING Stay!! Pictures do not do it justice!!

This property and the hosts were beyond incredible. As much as I would like to keep this property a secret - the hosts deserve recognition. The guest cottage was perfect for us and another couple and the location is set back off of a main road on the peninsula. We had access to the grill, fire pit, and made great use of the kitchen to have our own steak dinner. The horses and animals really add to the experience as do the incredibly friendly and welcoming hosts. After staying here I felt crazy having ever stayed at a hotel in Traverse City. Location allowed us to quickly shoot into downtown TC for dinner one night but we spent the rest of the time north of town visiting wineries without ever leaving the peninsula - a truly serene experience I've never had before staying in a hotel. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. clean, well prepared and maintained, and you couldn't ask for a more serene environment or more welcoming hosts. 15/10!

Romantic escape with beautiful scenery.

We travel often around the state of Michigan & this retreat is now at the top of our list for a return visit & recommending to fellow travelers. The cottage sits behind the owners home but still has the feel of total privacy. The cottage is spotless & comfortable with views from the bedroom into one of the several horse pastures. The horses are beautiful, so cool to be able to visit them in their stalls in the evening, play pool in the barn with the electric fireplace & radio playing, & I loved the friendly barn cats as well! There is a great party store just up the road called “Barrels & Barrels “. Might I also recommend visiting nearby Fishtown in Leland (wonderful lunch at “The Cove” right on the dam, watch for the fish trying to jump the dam to swim upstream, very entertaining!). Drive north to Northport for a cocktail at “The Garage”, great local bar, our favorite tavern we visited the whole weekend. Their pulled pork nachos looked AMAZING, will be going back for those on a future trip. All in all a perfect romantic getaway. If you are a horse lover check with owner Debbie & she may let you ride. Do yourself a favor & stay at least 2 nights in this beautiful area.

Serene spot to stay near Traverse City

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this unique property. It's not often you can be awakened by the soft neighing of horses, but it happens there. This is a lovely property. The house is well appointed and comfortable. Every convenience we could want for was there. The location is just a short drive to Traverse City, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mission Point and Sutton's Bay wineries and apple picking farms. Very quiet and peaceful location. The hosts are super nice and welcoming. There are lots of little towns nearby with charming main streets for dining and shopping including Suttons Bay, Leland, Northport, and Glen Arbor to name a few. The old Bay Theater in Suttons Bay is a great place to see a movie and it is all run by volunteers. When you're in Suttons Bay you must stop at Bahle's (pronounced Baileys). Great clothes for men and women and the nicest salespeople in a neat old building. Leelanau Cheese is about a mile from this VRBO property. They make their own cheeses there and have a gift shop. Try their delicious famous Raclette Cheese. Sleeping Bear Dunes are a must see in the area. It's $25 per car load but well worth it. For somewhere to eat nearby, I would recommend Art's Tavern in Glen Arbor (Just remember to take cash as they don't take Cards). I would also recommend eating at The Cove in Leland. It sits on the Carp river just where the river meets Lake Michigan. The food was delicious and it is a neat old Fishing Town with nice shops.

What a beautiful working horse farm with a great guest cottage and gorgeous grounds. The cottage has one bedroom but also has a loft with two beds for the younger generation. Host/Hostess were most accommodating, friendly, and happy to answer all questions. Location is very close to the village limits of Suttons Bay on M 22 and we had an easy ride to the Suttons Bay/Traverse City bike trail, which was paved and relatively flat the entire distance (15 miles). There was also easy access to nearby golf. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and quaint little towns such as Leland, Glen Arbor & Empire.

We loved our stay here! Debbie was extremely welcoming and helpful and even introduced us to her beautiful horses. The barn cats were even friendly! The guest house was clean and had everything we needed. Debbie also gave us some wonderful recommendations on where to go to make our exchange student’s first trip up north a memorable one. A Magical Return to a peaceful horse farm retreat

This was our second stay at this beautiful VRBO in Suttons Bay, and it was just as magical as the first. Nestled on an active horse farm, the property offers a peaceful, scenic escape that’s perfect for families looking to unwind and reconnect with nature. The owners, who live on the property, are incredibly kind, generous, and welcoming. They went above and beyond to make our stay special—inviting us to help feed the horses and even giving our daughter the unforgettable experience of trying her hand at horseback riding. Their warmth and hospitality made us feel like part of the family. The setting is quiet and serene, with the gentle sounds of horses and rustling trees creating a calming backdrop. It’s the kind of place where you can truly relax and soak in the beauty of northern Michigan. We’re so grateful for another wonderful stay and can’t wait to return again. Highly recommend this unique and heartwarming getaway!

About the host

Hosted by Debbie Slocombe

Host profile image
Jeff and Debbie live on the property with their daughter Samara. Jeff is an attorney and Debbie is a Landscape Architect who designed the beautiful grounds and maintains them as well. They enjoy the life up North with the opportunity to raise, ride and show horses.

Why they chose this property

Jeff and Debbie have been coming to the Traverse City/Suttons Bay all of their lives for vacations and decided to move to the area in 1999. They love the location of Suttons Bay because it has all the activities of Traverse City, yet the idyllic lifestyle of a Village just a short distance away.

What makes this property unique

Our home is just a five minute walk to the beach or a one mile bike ride/hike to Suttons Bay. The TART trail (Rails to Trails Suttons Bay to Traverse City) makes it a 13 mile bike ride to Traverse City.
You can bring your own bikes or borrow some of ours to ride into the Village for a nice breakfast/lunch/dinner.
Because we are on 21 acres surrounded by much more open area, you will not be constricted to a small area.
