About this property
Classic Waterfront Cottage with Private Fishing & boat dock - Boothbay Harbor
WATERFRONT COTTAGE WITH PRIVATE DOCK
Our peaceful cottage sits just in front of a rocky beach and calm cove of the wide Darmariscotta River with a private fishing and boating dock. (The dock is only able to be used after Memorial Day) A summer home surrounded by green lawns and gardens, its many picture windows and large deck provide views of the constantly changing 10 foot tides, of lobstermen hauling their traps, of sunrises, of seals riding the river’s current or of the blue heron that favors fishing in our small cove, and of the picturesque boat harbor downriver.
The heart of the cottage is its large living room, featuring three picture windows facing the river with a view of the harbor boats, another picture window facing the garden, a piano and a wood-burning stove. On one side of the living room is the kitchen, a sitting-dining area with a wall of screened windows also facing the river, and the master bedroom with queen bed and full bath with bathtub. The other side of the living room has an enclosed porch with another sitting area, a bedroom with a full size bed, another bedroom with a twin over full bunk bed, and second bathroom with shower. In addition, is a second common area for these two rooms. This section gives privacy from the master bedroom on the other side of the living room.
Outside is a large deck with lounge chairs, table and charcoal grill, and of course a full view of river activity. Our cove is appropriate for children with both a rocky and sandy area to explore and fish from.
Our quiet home is a five minute walk down a private road to the tiny shipbuilding village of East Boothbay, where the river reverses its flows into the large town pond, a fascination to watch when standing on the village bridge. The village’s dock restaurant serves great lobster meals on its large open deck that faces the yachts and sailboats anchored in the harbor. A general store is around the corner with all the necessities you may need including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
A five minute drive takes you to Ocean Point, where old cottages line the winding road beside the ocean’s rocky coast, and where visitors stroll for true coastal scenery. A large public cove provides swimming for children and adults; beyond the cove are two miles of wide rock ledges that can be easily climbed over so one can feel the spray of ocean surf crashing onto the rocks, or so one can discover small tidal pools teeming with crabs, mussels and plant life.
Our cottage is a five minute drive to Boothbay, a lively town with waterfront restaurants and cafes where you can watch yachts, sailboats, fishing boats and harbor cruise boats as they head in and out of the charming harbor. Boothbay is also home for the incredible Boothbay Region Botanical Gardens, now quite famous as the largest in New England, and the small Maine State Aquarium, very exciting to children and situated on a beautiful harbor point with picnic tables, grassy lawn and a rocky shore. 13 lighthouses and 15 wildlife land preserves are available for visits and hiking. Kayaking, golf, mini-golf, a new YWCA pool, lobster and clambakes, and boat cruises are always offered, with Windjammer Days (late June), July 4 fireworks, East Boothbay Shipbuilders Festival (August), and on-going craft fairs as special events.
Nearby are Wiscasset, known as the “most picturesque village in Maine” with old sea-captain’s homes and popular “Red Eats” lobster rolls, Freeport with the LLBean flagship store and other famous outlets, Rockport with its Farnsworth Art Museum which features the Wyeth artists’ works, and the nearby “Christina’s Farm” located on an unspoiled peninsula, and Bath with its Maine Maritime Museum. A day’s round trip boat ride brings you to Monhegan Island, a fascinating island known for its footpaths through village homes and artists’ studios.
Our secluded cottage offers the natural peace and beauty for a genuine Maine experience.

About the host
Hosted by Doug Gardner

My wife and I have owned the house next door for 18 years. Our extended family has enjoyed the Boothbay region for many many years. When we were approached by our next door neighbors about buying their family cottage of 46 years we knew it was a great opportunity to own 'another' slice of heaven, and a cabin that has a bunch of "Maine cabin character" wrapped into its one owner 46 year history!
Why they chose this property
This quaint summer place was built by and had been in the same family for over 46 years until we, as the next door neighbors were lucky enough to purchase it when it was time for the family to sell. We currently use the house ourselves for part of the summer and will be renting it out the rest of the summer.
What makes this property unique
Many homes may be listed as waterfront but this cottage couldn't be closer, giving you the ability to watch lobsterman hauling their traps, and sailboats bobbing in the harbor from your living room or back porch. The recently added dock gives gives you the ability to easily fish from the dock or use the Canoe or bring your own boat if you have one. As a reminder the dock and float is pulled out for the winter and is only put back in by Memorial day so May renters won't likely be able to use the dock.
