What an awesome place to unwind and relax. You can just stare at the mountain or enjoy the beautiful gardens. Very close to downtown but feels like you are at your own mountain retreat. Everything you could ask for in a place to stay.
Great hosts and a wonderful location! Property is nice. The Dragon's Lair was cofy and cozy with views of Mt Shasta! Will definitely book this place again!
My friend and I recently stayed 3 nights in this lovely studio. The location is really central to all activities. The setting is fabulous - quiet, private, surrounded by nature. And if you’re a gardener, the owners share their gorgeous garden, all of it created by John. They have made every effort to keep scents out of the place, much appreciated by those of us with allergies and sensitivities. The bed was really comfortable and warm. I would definitely stay there again.
My family of 4 had a great time at this property! There's room for the kids to run around outside, and many thoughtful accommodations inside and out. John and Sandy have created maps and guides to help guests make the most of their time in the area, and John's amazing craftsmanship can be observed throughout the property. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to stay here and we'll be jumping at the chance to stay here again in the future.
We really enjoyed our stay. Beautiful grounds. Fully stocked kitchen, fast Wi-Fi, and great communication with the hosts. They were very accommodating. We arrived with a decent amount of snow on the ground after a storm. Driveway was plowed nicely and it was easy to arrive even late in the evening. My son enjoyed some sledding and a zip line on the property. We wished we stayed longer and will be returning!
The one bedroom cottage was lovely with Mt Shasta view and beautiful flower garden. Owner John and Sandy was very easy going.
The place has everything we need. It is tucked away in a private street in the serene woods, yet walking distance to downtown.
We will definitely recommend it to anyone!
The warmth and kindness of our hosts, the beautiful layout and landscape of the property, and the well appointed guest quarters made our stay at the Dragon’s Lair feel like home. The Lair provides privacy and a sense of inclusion both; we felt welcomed and cared for. Thank you John and Sandy! We’ll be back again.
Our impeccable hosts were above and beyond kind and friendly, making it one of the most personable experiences we’ve had. The place was beautiful and so thoughtfully cared for. We learned about great local spots and cultural events and wish we could have stayed longer. We will definitely be back!

Amazing place to stay
We stayed for a week and it was wonderful. The space was perfect and we felt like we were staying with family. Breakfast on the deck with views of the beautiful garden and Mt Shasta was very nice to wake up to!
We will be back next year!
Cozy, clean space with beautiful forest views. John and Sandy are lovely people. They provide lots of great info on the area with books and binders. I would definitely stay here again.
Property was quiet. The Dragon’s Lair was comfortable and clean. The kitchen actually was stocked with plenty of pans in silverware plus spices and some condiments in the fridge…
I definitely will stay again. I really enjoyed our trip.
The owners were very helpful and friendly.
Thank you so much to John and his wife for creating such a comfortable and lovely place to stay! Everything was so clean, well thought out and enjoyable. We cooked a few nice meals in the well stocked kitchen, enjoyed some DVDs during the rain and generally were able to relax! We found wonderful sledding at Bunny Flats for our children! Highly recommend this sweet cottage.
This was our first visit to Mount Shasta and we couldn’t have chosen a better location and hosts. John and Sandy were simply amazing and were only outdone by the beauty of their property and gardens! Our kids loved staying in the apartment and were thrilled when John told them about the ‘hobbit hut’.
We plan to stay here each time we visit Mt Shasta and recommend that you not miss this gem by the mountain!
Thanks again to our amazing hosts :)

This is a beautiful place tucked into a quiet pocket and low key neighborhood. The place has a great view of the mountain and the setting has a beautiful sanctuary feel to it. You are close enough to town that travel is very easy, yet you feel very close to nature and the wilderness. The loft is very spacious and comfy, I did not want to leave. You will love this place, especially with the extra touches that John and Sandy have added to their gardens and property. They are so welcoming and sweet you will feel that you have known them for years. One of the best places I have stayed, I will be coming back as often as possible in the future!

Home away from home at Mt. Shasta
My husband and I just returned home from a stay in John and Sandy’s Mt. Shasta garden loft, and I have to say that all of the nice things previous reviewers have said are all true. The location is scenic and peaceful, with stunning views of Mt. Shasta and both trails and town nearby. The loft itself is confortable, private, beautifully designed, and fully equipped with everything we could have needed during our stay. John and Sandy are warm and welcoming. But probably the best thing I can say is that we didn’t want to leave, and we have already booked our return stay!

The Perfect Place
We stayed 3 nights at the Garden Loft and wished it could have been longer. Great location, convenient to everything but secluded, surrounded by trees, gardens, and a view of the mountain. The owner did a beautiful job on the loft, lots of nice details inside and out, very clean & spacious. Kitchen has everything you need. After a day of exploring we really enjoyed the deck lined with colorful geraniums, a bird feeder, and the mountain view. The stars at night were amazing! A great spot, enjoyed every minute of our stay!! Look forward to going back again. We know the area and this was the perfect place for us.
Our stay at the dragons lair exceeded our expectations immensely! The host’s were very communicative and it was an absolute pleasure to meet them: The place itself was extremely beautiful and clean with lots of storage space and a beautiful garden that is very loved and tended to on a daily basis. I loved how the place wasn’t attached to the host’s house so that we didn’t have to worry about being to loud after a certain time. We felt like we entered a healing portal of love and synchronicities as soon as we entered the property. 10/10 recommend to anyone who is seeking a safe space to explore and heal their inner worlds while taking in the beautiful mysteries that Mount Shasta offers along with being very close to the actual mountain.
Thank you so much John and Sandy we will definitely be back 🙏😇
Beautiful property inside and outside, wonderful owners
The unit is a whole second floor over the owner's craft shop (their house is next door) and has its own covered carport. Inside it is like a giant loft apartment, with a full kitchen (lots of appliances, full-sized frig),and lots of closet space, washer and dryer (!!!). Table to seat four, Dish TV, big couch and reclining chair, games in a cabinet, huge bookshelf full of books, comfortable bed that looks out on garden. Lots of places to charge your devices. Gorgeous garden of owner. Bathroom does not have a tub but has a huge shower stall. I imagine this is a hygiene concern so appreciate why. But my achy bones would have liked a soak after hikes! The place is very tastefully decorated and has a heat pump AC that does the job and is almost soundless. It is very quiet and secluded in a wooded area inside the city limits of Mt. Shasta, just a mile from stores, but so wooded you could pretend you are in the outskirts. Overall, just a gorgeous place. I almost don't want to tell you, lest you compete for my stay another time!
The Garden Loft was the perfect place for my friends and I. We came here to snowboard for the weekend and wanted to make sure to beat the holiday crowd. Had everything we needed to enjoy our weekend.
The loft is within minutes of everything in Mount Shasta. John, our host, greeted us when we arrived and gave all the info we needed on Mount Shasta and had very organized binders about Mount Shasta history, places to eat, birds to see and even about the flowers.
The kitchen was perfect. It has all your essentials to make a great dinner. It also had many extras likely left from past guest.
We also really enjoyed having a TV. We usually don’t watch television much but after snowboarding we were exhausting and watched many movies. The loft has a decent selection of DVDs as well.
The property was gorgeous, quiet, and a very accommodating host. Highly recommended.
The loft is beautifully laid out, uses space so well it feels much larger than the numbers. Very comfortable, very nicely appointed, new throughout. Lovely wood furniture. View of the mountain! The garden is glorious, flowers and veg. But the key EXTRA here is the hosts: Starting with big binders of local food and attractions, how-tos, important info and good Wifi, all the way to personal gardening advice, genuinely warm people when needed, no botheration when not. QUIET. Away from town, so you have that 'in the forest' feel, but just a half-mile away when you need something. Mt. Shasta City isn't a city; it's a small town (my hometown is miniscule and calls itself a city, too!) but it has all the amenities you need and none that you don't, to make a restful or exciting getaway, and with the Hansons as your host, you enter your adventure completely ready with insider info. Hubby and I really can't praise this place and these hosts enough. One advantage of the next-door-carriage-house location: Hubby could observe a midnight lunar eclipse and do other potentially-bothersome nocturnal activities of the amateur astronomer and neither hosts not neighbors (a dim distance away) were bothered.
We are definitely recommending that you stay here!

About the host
Hosted by John and Sandy Hansen
Sandy and I moved here 47 years ago from the Bay Area because of our love of backpacking. No Regrets! We raised our family here. Both Sandy and I are retired teachers. Sandy elem. school and me, high school. We love outdoor activities as well as jewelry making, playing piano, gardening, knitting, swimming, exercising, hiking, woodworking, and sailing.
Why they chose this property
The garden loft is a great get-a-way from the hustle and bustle of one's home. Guests have called our garden loft serene with a special feeling of calmness. One is in the forest yet only a short hike to the downtown area.
What makes this property unique
Our visitors will enjoy the privacy and solitude as well as the close proximity to town, skiing, and many other outdoor activities that Mt. Shasta is known for. Park in the carport that is steps from the front door of the loft. Enjoy the 1 acre of flowers during the Spring, Summer and Fall. How about a two person shower with two shower heads!! Total relaxation awaits you here.
