About this property
Charming bungalow w/WiFi in tranquil downtown Newport, walkable to everything!
Discover the beauty of Newport from this charming studio bungalow with a loft, located in The Point, walkable to everything Newport has to offer.
This cozy retreat features: Full-size memory foam bed in the loft, Queen-size sofa bed, RV twin foldout bed upon request, bathroom with shower including handheld shower head, fully stocked kitchen that includes a dishwasher, stovetop, microwave, fridge/freezer, toaster oven, Nespresso coffee maker, water kettle and other kitchenware. Enjoy amenities including radiant flooring and fireplace heating, mini split for AC and heat, Roku TV, fiber optic Wi-Fi and a private patio. Immerse yourself in the tranquil surroundings and unwind in this terrific getaway.
This historic location built in 1870 is called the "Sail Loft" with the name spelt in nautical letters above the front door, which we preserved. A neighbor down the street at that time constructed the cement bricks that were utilized to build this property. Early on, the bungalow was a "men only" tavern called the "Idle Hour" that had a secret knock at the front door and three tables where men would play Pitch while a bartender kept players well-served via kegs.
We love this neighborhood, and this property holds a special place in our hearts as it is incredibly unique. This is a safe location for a single person and ideal for those who want to walk around Newport and cross the street to the RIPTA station to get around town.
Some of our favorites... a walk to Goat Island in the evening to sit by the firepit, enjoy live music and marvel at the beautiful scenery. Across the street, The John Stephens Shop that was founded in 1705 creates beautiful one-of-a-kind inscriptions in stone. Around the corner, Jessica Hagen is as beautiful as her art gallery. Cottage & Garden, next door, has beautiful antiques and my father grew up in Bloomfield Hills, MI with one of the artists who works there. Down the street, Young Designs Floral Studio is the perfect place to purchase a bouquet to freshen things up. Every morning, we walk to Drift Cafe or Nitro for breakfast. There is so much more that we will send before check-in via our Newport document that we have been creating over decades with many, many ideas!
*Additional services like cleaning services and washer/dryer are available upon request.

About the host
Hosted by Stephanie Shuler

Our family recently moved back to the northeast after spending 20 years in Colorado and California. Newport, RI has always been a special place for Stephanie who grew up in Connecticut and spent many weekends and summers enjoying all that Newport has to offer. Our family decided to purchase a few historic properties that were built in 1870 and have since carefully restored them to modern day use and efficiencies. The location of this "Sail Loft" cannot be beat! We believe that it is an ideal hotel alternative for couples and families who want to spend time in Newport, year-round. Our absolute favorite times of year in Newport are during the spring & summer, Jazz and Folk Festivals and December holidays but we truly appreciate any time of year in this special place. We love sharing this property with others and look forward to hosting you!
Why they chose this property
This particular location is in the Historic District of Newport. There really could not be a better location for walking to the beach, downtown and trolley stop. This area has been gentrified over the years and the beautiful mature trees, cute shops and historic homes with people walking up and down the street makes this bungalow a very lively, special spot.
What makes this property unique
Our renters marvel at how many people stop to take a look at this bungalow, which many would call a tiny home. This is a very unique property in that it was an all-male bar back in the day and we once met gentlemen who stopped over to tell us all about the bar and what the property used to be like. This particular property is surrounded by quite a bit of land that the National Preservation Society owns so it is extremely private and yet the distant sounds of the nearby minor baseball league and music from various venues make it feel like it is truly located at the center of Newport life.
