About this property
Fab modern garden apartment in idyllic hamlet in natural park. Lovely terraces.
Situated in an idyllic hamlet within the magical pine forest of La Brena behind the village of Los Canos de Meca, the views lead through the verdant landscape to the sea and the historic lighthouse of Trafalgar. Casa Margareta offers a very special experience. The tranquility of its natural surroundings makes it a great choice for that relaxing 'get away from it all' holiday, yet the summer 'buzz' of the beach is just 5 mins away. The living space is open plan and boasts a glass wall of four doors opening onto a large, shady patio, filling it with light and allowing the outside-in.The garden terrace made of rustic railway sleepers is great for sunbathing and the perfect place to sip those sundowners. Chill for sure, but we are also ideally located for an incredible variety of activities, culture and adventure. How about walking, horse riding or cycling in the forest; a day out to one of the many famous historical Andalusia villages/towns nearby; or a simple stroll down to Canos beach to take in the sublime view to Morocco across the water
Casa Margareta is unusual in the area, in that it offers the best in contemporary design, modern facilities and comfort in genuinely Arcadian surroundings. This Mediterranean Modern apartment is fueled by solar power, inspired by Corbusier and much cared for by its owner. The large airy open plan living/dining/kitchen area is stylishly furnished with a mix of the modern, vintage and ethnic,.This opens onto the shady covered terrace with a wooden table and 4 chairs for outside dining, and a fabulous L shaped outdoor sofa for relaxing. There are lovely views to the pebble garden, the rural landscape and the sea beyond. The underfloor heating provided by solar panels ensures total comfort in winter and on chillier days and can be purchased separately for cash.
The garden is very special.and one of the highlights of staying at Casa Margareta. It has been imaginatively landscaped with different sized pebbles, wooden posts and Mediterranean architectural planting. A large palm tree is the focus in one corner, leading the eye down towards the sea in the distance. All the neighbouring houses have large, rural gardens too, and so do not impinge on each other in any way. The surroundings are very green at all times of year , the pine forest always an inspiration, the bird and animal life always vital ( including cows with tinkling bells, allowed to roam the forest in the winter), and the light of the Costa de la Luz always happily reminding us of where we are - somewhere very exceptional.

About the host
Hosted by Miriam Reik
As a photographer by profession and an artist by rote, building my own house in the most beautiful of surroundings proved in hindsight to be a venture that I was destined to realise. So now although I still live in London, enjoying everything a great city in Northern Europe has to offer, I am always thinking about and looking forward to the next time I can come back to my very own 'place in the sun' here in the most southerly part of Europe. And believe me in mid winter, when I come here from a grey and cold London, I am truly grateful for the consistent warmth and sun that greet me.
Why they chose this property
I bought Casa Margareta when it was practically a ruin with a view to renovating it. Situated in a lovely little hamlet in a umbrella pine forest with views to the sea, the house itself wasn’t the greatest - but the location was stunning and we all know that the winning formula is ‘ location location location’. I also knew I wouldn’t come across such a chance again within my budget. As happens with most building projects, nothing goes to plan and I ended up tearing down the house and building a totally new one. No regrets - just a typical story about a Brit building in Spain ! Twelve years on and I still never fail to marvel at the loveliness of my house and its situation.
What makes this property unique
I'd always dreamt about that house in the sun. In 2005 after a trip to Mexico, I realised Spain could suit my purse as well as my recently discovered affinity for Spanish culture, and was a comfortable flying distance from London. So deciding to take the plunge, I looked to the most undeveloped coast of Spain and came for the first time to the Costa de la Luz and Canos de Meca. I was not disappointed. The countryside is stunning ; virgin beaches stretching for miles; umbrella pine forests; protected natural parks. I love the historical context with Morocco across the water and the ubiquitous local white Moorish hilltop towns. The economy is still led by farming /fishing with the Andaluz character intact and tourism still having minimal impact on the environment. In summer the area is popular with mainly Spanish tourists and so inevitably gives rise to a very fun overall vibe. What is so great about Casa Margareta is that it benefits from its location all year round. In summer when the crowds do come, there is no stress in our little hamlet, and in winter if it is blustery or cooler down by the beach, more often than not because of our sheltered situation, all is peace and calm here at Casa M.
