About this property

Red Cat House Vacation Apartment

Red Cat House is a one of a kind vacation rental apartment in Taos. When inquiring about vacation accommodations in town, an often asked question is 'Are you walking distance from the Plaza?' Red Cat House is unique in that it across the street from the Historic Taos Plaza. In fact there are Plaza, town and mountain views from every window. This apartment offers convenience combined with a peaceful and quiet, spacious yet cozy, home away from home for one or two guests.

Red Cat House is located on Dona Luz Lane, 'The Garden Street of Taos' (landscaped by me, a professional landscaper) This street boasts a wonderful variety of shops and restaurants. It was once the 'Red Light District' in town and La Dona Luz was a madame.
Entry is down a little brick pathway surrounded by blooming plants with original outdoor art on all walls and an outdoor seating area. Upstairs is Red Cat House-a wonderful intimate world of its own. You will discover antiques, color and light, original art and whimsical touches in your own private little world.
The sunny eat in kitchen is well equipped for morning coffee, a gourmet breakfast or a romantic dinner for two.
The living room is a perfect spot for lounging with a comfortable couch, lamps, a flat screen TV, DVD's, books and a selection of music for just that right mood. Enjoy dinner at an 18th century walnut tilt top table for two looking out over the Plaza with a view of Taos Mountain in the distance. If you need to do a little work (not too much I hope), there is high speed internet available and a desk where you can write about your wonderful Taos adventures or even compose a spontaneous love poem if so inclined. Many of my guests enjoy my record player and collection of albums.
The sunlight bathroom has a large shower, lots of towels, robes for two and some fun touches to discover.
The bedroom is so very special with an antique queen size, pillow top, four post teak canopy bed, down comforter, fine linens and lots of pillows. I even have an electric mattress pad for chilly Taos nights. So nice to climb into a warm bed.Hang your clothes in a tall mirrored English oak armoire. The bedroom is cozy with a gas log stove. The multi paned windows are screened to allow you to enjoy our wonderful mountain air that just invites snuggling-so cozy and romantic.
Summer visitors will enjoy window air conditioners in bedroom, kitchen and living room. There are also ceiling fans in living room and bedroom.
If you can tear yourselves away from the comforts of Red Cat House, all of Taos is just outside your door. You are within easy walking distance of all Historic District shops, restaurants, galleries and museums. You may browse my "Melissa's Picks" found in the apartment or just ask me for suggestions about 'All Things Taos'. Ask me where to go for live music and special events during your stay so you can meet folks who enjoy life and all the richness Taos has to offer. I enjoy sharing the charms and stories of our town with visitors.
Although this apartment is right downtown evenings are quiet; an advantage of these old Taos buildings with thick adobe walls.
Red Cat House has so much to offer. This is a little slice of Paradise in Taos-the perfect vacation spot you will always remember.
p.s. No significant other at the moment? Red Cat House is a perfect solo vacation spot too.
As with all of my properties I am dog friendly. $10 per night per dog. You may leave on dining table upon departure. I provide dog sheets for sofa and bed. Please use.

PLEASE NOTE: Even if my calendar shows a reservation for your dates take a look at Vrbo 513557 or Vrbo 598600. Both are similar apartments on the same street.

Perfect!

Staying at the Red Cat House was perfect...for location to Taos Plaza, its activities (dining, shopping, etc.), and nearby museums and galleries...for quality and pricing...for marvelous decor...for comfort...for desired amenities...and for a great view of the Taos Mountain range. It was everything needed and then some for staying in Taos! Thanks, Melissa, for it all!

The apartment is right on a parking lot, and there are lots of police and ambulances that pass by at night. It was clean but smelled and felt really old and dusty. And my car was broken into at nite.

Great new spot!

We took a break from our normal Thanksgiving holiday, and had a wonderful time with our stay. The weather was sunny and lovely, the nights were cold and perfectly cozy with two natural gas fireplaces. The place is well decorated, and perfectly appointed with everything one needs to cook there, or go out. Walking distance allows many options goods and services from local shop owners. Music and entertainment was available nightly by local artists, and the art was prolific. The design, warmth, hospitality, and artfulness of what she has created was perfect for the two of us. This newly renovated house will be popular with good reason. We will return.

Very cute, romantic apartment -- awesome location!

The Red Cat House was wonderful! The location could not be better and the house is just as advertised. As we heard from folks around the Plaza, the two days we were in Taos were two of the hottest yet, so we did miss a little A/C in the afternoons. But having said that if we kept the swamp coolers filled with water and ice it did help a bit, and after the sun went down and we opened windows it cooled down very quick. We loved everything about Taos, great hike up to Williams Lake, great breakfast on the patio at Bent Street Cafe and so much fun walking around the Farmers Market on Saturday morning! We definitely plan on returning to Taos someday, and would stay here again for sure!

Looks good, lives poor

Overall - would not return. We stayed for 7+ nights. Positives - awesome location near the plaza, the place is big enough for stays that last longer than a weekend, the charm of this place is awesome. It can be fine for a 1-2 night stay as long as you just need a place to sleep and enjoy the uniqueness of this place before the charm wears off. Areas of improvement: 1) The plumbing is weak in the entire place and you are guaranteed to run into clogging issues especially in bath. The toilet makes a weird sound on water re-fill every time it is flushed. Loud that you can hear it throughout the place. Needs to be looked into urgently. 2. The kitchen supplies and amenities are weak. Sink is poor designed that makes it hard to use it for cleaning utensils. Hard to tell what are kitchen supplies and what are trinkets that are all over the place. It was really hard to make a meal and we gave up after first time. 3. The living room sofa is end of life. The covers are very rough and there isn't much support. Hopefully the hosts replace it for future guests. Looks fine in the pictures but nothing that you can put to use. 4. The cleanliness was average. We get that Taos is dusty and it can get windy which spread the dust around. That said, the cleaners left lot of places unclean. Example - The cutlery was dirty and we had to clean it before using it. The bath should be cleaned more thoroughly. 5. The bedding is average and can use an upgrade urgently

What a wonderful, zany, eclectic, warm apartment! Plenty of cat motif to enjoy but our dog, Ruth, felt right at home. Red Cat House is located directly west of the historic Plaza so dining and shopping was so easy. The collection of pictures on the site is very accurate. The kitchen is small but well-appointed. The apartment has a large living area with a wonderful picture window. The bedroom is spacious. It can get warm in the summer but the three window A/C units keep the apartment comfortable. And, at night, you have the choice of opening the windows (which are screened) to let in cool, fresh air. The hostess was quick to respond to any questions. We certainly recommend Red Cat House.

Best Stay Ever

While traveling cross country from the east coast, staying at Red Cat House in Taos, NM was absolutely the best stay ever. When first entering the apartment, one finds it clean, beautifully decorated with well thought out with useful and quality provisions. Melissa has gone a step above to make the apartment comfortable and inviting. Great location for leisurely walking, restaurants, dog park, shopping and hiking. Directions are clear and Melissa is easy to communicate with and always responds quickly. Thank you for an outstanding accommodation.

Cute place

Very cute little place, we enjoyed the decore and location quite a bit. Only downside is that it is right by the police station and so it was pretty noisy with the fire trucks going by and also if you’re sensitive to gas smells, the gas fireplaces are a bit much. Overall, I would stay there again but I would go in the spring when you can open the windows and have ear plugs.

Quaint and cozy apartment

The apartment is a nicely decorated apartment in the heart of historic Taos. The central location made it easy to walk in the downtown area. There was a full kitchen with everything you needed to cook meals and a grocery store was just around rhe corner. The large living room window allowed wonderful morning sunlight in each day. I would definitely stay there again.

I seem to collect homes in Taos. I now own 11.
I was a professional landscaper in California previously and now landscape all of my Taos properties.

Why they chose this property

The first time I saw this apartment I saw the potential for a wonderful vacation rental. It is cozy yet spacious and the location can't be beat. I receive so many compliments on my other vacation rentals in town for my taste and sense of zany style and I love to garden so the combination of the apartment and the front garden was something I could not resist. This could become the most popular apartment in town! Everyone who sees it (including me) wants to move in!

What makes this property unique

I love the spacious, yet intimate feel. I love the way my eclectic taste with the furnishings (high end antiques, rustic, country and New Mexican pieces) work together. All the art is original with great variety. lots of nouances and fun little touches to be found throughout the space.

Then there is the location--right in the heart of town and just across the street from the Plaza. Peaceful and quiet inside with so much of Taos just down the stairs and across the street.
Parking in lot across the street. Meters, but town is not ticketing.
