About this property

Wonderful, Downtown Treasure

This apartment is right downtown and convenient to everything Taos has to offer including restaurants, shops, galleries and museums.
For five years this was my popular shop Red Cat Melissiana. One day I realized my passion was Vacation Rentals (I have 11) and not retail so it was time to re invent myself once again... Red Cat Melissiana Apartment is located in an 1880's building with all the charm of old Taos and so much history. Originally this was a street with small homes and shops across the street from the Plaza and the original Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. This street was once the Red Light District of Taos with a network of underground tunnels leading to interesting destinations and all kinds of varied stories. There are many spirit activity reports for juicy stories to share. Just ask me...
This apartment is now a newly re furbished space decorated with my antiques, original art and sense of whimsy throughout. It's everything you could want on your vacation for 1-4 guests and so very 'Taos'.
Built in the 1880's, the building has many wooden vigas (ceiling beams), creaky old wood floors, 14" walls and many windows.
The living room has a queen sofa sleeper with a gel foam mattress and sleeps an additional two guests with bedding stored in antique trunk/coffee table. ($25 per person per night) There is a big flat screen TV if TV is something you want on your vacation. It's located in a one of a kind cupboard in the living room behind closed doors. I also have a record player and albums for that retro feel.
The bedroom features a queen bed with high end bedding and a decorative quilt. There is a trastero/armoire for your clothing and just leave your robes at home since there are two just waiting for your cozy moments here.
The kitchen features an eclectic tiled counter, vintage cooktop, sink and refrigerator combo. It is well equipped and offers all amenities for any cooking at home. Table for two-four and extra chairs if you need them.
The bathroom features a fully tiled corner shower and a sink set in an antique Mexican cabinet. There are lots of towels and any supplies you might need.
Winter heat is provided by two stoves. One gas and one electric. Operate gas log stove only by the wall thermostat. NEVER turn off main gas line. For summer there are ceiling fans and a swamp cooler, but the 14" thick walls keep this space comfortable year round.
If you visit in spring, summer or fall you can enjoy 'Melissa's Secret Garden' a private little private oasis under a box elder tree surrounded by container plants, a wall fountain, outdoor lighting and lots of assemblage garden art. I am also offer a BBQ grill and string lights so my guests can enjoy this outdoor space.
My style of decor is Melissiana Eclectic. What is this? it's a mix and match style with antiques, yard sale and consignment treasures, original art and more--always fun things for my guests to discover, appreciate and enjoy.
This downtown historic building actually has three private apartments and is perfect for single travelers and couples or combine the three and bring a bigger group of friends and families. The three apartments will sleep up to ten guests in total. All kinds of possibilities (Check out my other two apartments on this street Vrbo 422849 (the Red Cat House) and Vrbo 513557 (Casa Flora)
As with all of my properties this apartment is dog friendly. I provide dog sheets for bed and sofa as well as a decorated mutt mitt box in the side courtyard. $10 per night per dog. Just leave on kitchen table.
Great prices, nicely furnished with a quirky sense of style, well equipped, comfortable beds, old adobe with thick walls for peaceful nights and privacy, right downtown and parking across the street. WOW!

We loved this place. Great location being next to town square. Great art decors on the interior. Everything are there for our needs even though we didn't need them all. Looking forward to our next stay in the future.

Fantastic Stay

The house was exactly as described and was a very enjoyable and a comfortable stay for myself, my husband and our 2 kids. The house was fully stocked from plates, cups, bath supplies, etc. We definitely recommend staying here and hope to do it again ourselves!

Easy access

My two friends and I enjoyed staying so close to the town square and were able to walk everywhere to shop and eat at all the fun and interesting places. Melissa was easy to communicate with and made sure we had her information to contact her if we needed to during our stay. The area we stayed in gave us plenty of room and was comfortable for us.

Charming little place in the heart of Taos

This place is ooozing with character and so many unique touches. We loved the location and could walk to shops and dining options nearby. The bathroom situation is…cozy. There is no good lighting for getting ready, so be advised to pack a lighted mirror if you want to see what you’re doing. The shower is teeny tiny. The kitchen is also very small for food prep but served the purpose for minimal prep. Overall, we loved staying here and would recommend. It was truly a memorable experience!

Needs a little love

We really enjoyed the property and the location. The quirky decor was great. The property while clean could use a thorough dusting. Also the mattress and pillows need replacing.

Very nice, walking distance from everything

Very cute quirky place in a good location. Pretty quiet. The places around had great food and drinks. Melissa was very responsive to concerns even at weird times. Cooking is not really easy because of the kitchen layout, but it's not like anyone goes to Taos to cook more than breakfast anyway!!! The only thing was the front window and exit sign were bright at night and there was no curtains to close, but a sheet worked out just fine.

Cute and Cozy

This was an adorable little apartment and just off of the square. We did not hear a lot of street noise or have issues with outside lights shining. There is an exit sign we were unable to turn off, but it made a perfect nightlight. It is mainly one large room with dividers except for the bathroom, but for my husband and I it was perfect. The property manager answered my text messages. We would stay again and have recommended it to friends.

Great Stay! 4.5 Stars

We had a wonderful stay in Taos and Melissa was a gracious hostess. The apartment is in an ideal location convenient to everything. It's decorated in traditional local art and fully stocked with all necessities. The only issue was the light coming in from the outside at night. There is a restaurant next door and unfortunately, they left a bright light on until the early hours of the morning making it difficult to sleep. I would definitely stay here again!

Michael Hearne's Big Barn Dance

We were in Taos for this music festival. It was our first time and this property was a great location! It was a short walk to the festival and there were plenty of restaurants, shops, things to explore on the way. The restaurant light that was a problem for previous renters was no longer a problem. Free or low cost parking was available very close by and we rarely used our car. We would recommend this property for a couple.

Cute and cozy apartment in a fantastic location

This adorable apartment was just what we were looking for! The bed and sofa were super comfy and it's very close walking distance from the plaza and all the neat little shops in downtown Taos. It was a great base for exploring the town, and a soothing retreat for a cup of tea and a good book when the weather got bad. We were even able to cook ourselves a decent breakfast on the funky retro stove/sink/fridge combo. I only wish the otherwise well-appointed kitchen had at least one kitchen knife -- it's tough to slice an apple with a butter knife! Loved it, and we'd love to come back.

So personal! So "Taos" !

I have now stayed in two of Melissa's casitas, and their furnishings are so personal, I feel like I have met her face to face! This one is literally a stone's throw from the wonderful farmers' market, and anything else that is happening on the Taos Plaza. Thanks, Melissa! I loved them both, but of course will have to try the others too, because they are each so quirky and unique...like Taos itself! ;)

Red Cat in Taos

Studio that was quaint and felt very traditional. Small kitchen area, full bathroom, bed and sofa bed with a small side/backyard. Kitchen has fridge/sink/two electric burner combo that seemed sufficient for small meals. There are two swamp coolers and a window A/C in the front area. The place was very close to lots of shops and restaurants. I think we visited during the low season so there were no issues with finding parking across the street but if it was high season I think I would be anxious about not having a dedicated spot.

Recent Taos Stay

This property is a charming combo of knick knacks and interesting things to look at. It is located across from the historic plaza with lots of shopping and galleries. It is not a residential neighborhood so there is a fair amount of traffic but it is convenient to anywhere you would want to go. The bathroom is very small and the shower stall (no tub) is extremely small. It is next door to a restaurant that was not open while we were there but could be a concern later in the week. All in all, it was a fun experience. Just as an FYI -Be aware that a lot of restaurants and museums/sites close early in the week and we might have planned a bit differently had we known

Treasure Indeed!

We loved loved our 4 nights stay here at Red Cat! We've been visiting Taos for 30 years and this was quintessential Taos folk art cozy comfort. We walked to Farmer's Market just across the street in the Plaza and ate local goodies for some of our meals at "home". We had everything we needed in the sweet galley kitchen and ate by the gas stove and out in the secret garden. Walked to The Love Apple for Dinner one night! Almost didn't want to be away for our day at Ojo but had a great mid-week soak there. The bed was so comfortable--better than ours at home. One night we even pre-warmed the sheets with the flip of a switch. Really didn't want to leave! Next time we stay for a week! Thanks for every little thing!

Context Needed Prior to Booking

Nothing about this review is intended to dispute or take away from the overview provided by the host, which is absolutely accurate. However, what this means in person is worth considering, allowing you to better assess fit for you. It is a studio- the bed and living are separated by a screen and open bookcase. The bed and kitchen are separated by a half wall. The space is LOUD. You are literally on the street facing a parking lot, and you can hear your neighbor, particularly when they are in the bathroom or kitchen. The decorations are extensive. There is no space for your items if you like to be organized, or have them somewhere other than the floor. The one wardrobe was full of sheets so you could only use hangers. Shelves are full, desktop is full, mantel is full, etc. The kitchen does not have an oven or real freezer space. My ice pack for my knee (we were on a ski trip) did not fit in the freezer shelf. The bathroom is charming- but the sink is not terribly accessible for anything beyond hands. To end on a positive note, if your intention is to explore Taos via walking- you could not be in a better location. Again, everything the host says is true, but in reality we found the studio not workable for us and our dog. Despite having booked five nights we left after one night, and unfortunately ended up paying for two lodgings.

This downtown apartment was originally my first and in all likelihood my last retail experience. I spent five years re inventing myself. I was an antique store, but liked my treasures too much to sell them... a lingerie store with great pieces, but...I was a flower shop with amazing floral designs, but... Then a popular gift store with truly unique pieces, but nothing ever quite worked... Once more it time to re invent. I realized I did so well with my six Vacation Rentals. I loved furnishing all my places (all those antiques...) and a reason to go to yard sales and my favorite consignment stores. I filled my homes with eclectic bits and pieces. My style was Melissiana eclectic. As my plumber said, 'Nothing you do makes any sense, but when it's all done, it just works!' I had a reason to buy all the original art that spoke to me. I have stayed in so many vacation rentals myself that I have a good idea of just what amenities and extras I wanted to offer vacationers. I enjoy interacting with all my guests and sharing what I love about this little mountain town I have called home for eleven years.. I received so many positive reviews that I decided to close the shop and pursue my passions so Vacation Rental #7! So much fun!!!

Why they chose this property

I fell in love this this historic little street and love the charm of old adobes. It has a great location right downtown, ample parking across the street. The street has so much charm and is beautifully landscaped! That would be me. I was a professional landscaper in Northern California before I moved to Taos and am proud that this street is now considered, 'The Garden Street of Taos'! I even won a Taos Beautification Award. All in my spare time. Ha Ha! It gives locals and visitors so much pleasure every summer and I love the color and vibrancy of my plants.

What makes this property unique

Charming old adobe with 14' thick walls, lots of windows, hand hewn vigas (ceiling beams), creaky wood floors. Great privacy and a downtown location that is the best! Comfortable, whimsical and the Secret Garden too...
