About this property

The Braeutigam Cabin at Agarita Creek, Fredericksburg, TX Ranch Retreat; 2/2

The Braeutigam Cabin is the larger of two German chink style log cabins located at Agarita Creek, a 170 acre heritage sheep ranch just ten minutes from the heart of Fredericksburg, Texas, in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The approximately 1300 sq. ft. two story cabin, completed in 2009, features an exposed log interior, stained concrete floors, a wooden cathedral ceiling, rustic pine furniture, Talavera tile from Mexico, and Indian blankets. The cabins reflect and respect all of the various peoples who have called this land home.

There is a living and dining area and a fully-equipped modern kitchen with stoneware, silverware, cookware, and just about every kind of kitchen gadget you can imagine. A luxurious master suite is located downstairs, with a bathroom featuring both a garden tub and a separate shower. Upstairs is a second ample bedroom with its own full bath. All beds are queen size. There is an additional queen convertible sofa in the living area. WIth the convertible sofa, the Braeutigam Cabin sleeps six.

Agarita Creek is a retreat from the everyday. There is no television service to the cabins, although there are small televisions for watching movies (and there is a supply of movies in the cabin as well). There are board games and books for that rare hill country rainy day. There is internet service to the main house and probably to your smart phone. There is no wireless internet service to the cabin. There is no telephone, other than your cell phone (should you choose to bring it)..

Just outside the front door is an ample porch running the width of the cabin, which is perfect for watching the sun set over the beautiful creek canyon below. The cabin has its own fire pit for late night campfires. A grill is available for guest use.

The ranch is home to heritage Jacob and Navajo sheep, a small herd of Dexter cows, a wide array of chickens, four donkeys, and a livestock guardian dog named Beatrice. Children are encouraged, and children of all ages are invited to engage in ongoing ranch activities if and as they wish.

The ranch terrain is varied, and provides ample opportunity for walking, hiking, or just observing wildlife and flora and fauna. The ranch features white-tail and axis deer, Rio Grande turkeys, rabbits, a large variety of birds, and the occasional bobcat. Virtually every tree or shrub native to the Edwards Plateau exists somewhere on the ranch.

Fredericksburg is the most popular tourist destination in the Texas Hill Country, with its many vineyards and wineries, unique shopping and restaurants, vibrant live music scene, world class historical museum, and outdoor recreational opportunities. Visitors never lack for something to do, unless they choose to do nothing but take in a little rest and relaxation.

What gratifies us is that our guests tend to return again and again over the years, considering the ranch to be their home away from home whenever they visit the hill country. This is the only real accurate measure of our success in sharing a place that is so special to us.

Wonderful Getaway
The cabin was perfect for our needs and we absolutely loved the property. The sheep grazed past the kitchen window every morning while I had my coffee. Very peaceful and relaxing and owners were very responsive. Truly enjoyed our stay and would definitely book again!

Great Stay!
We stayed here with friends for two days while visiting Fredericksburg. It’s close enough to town to get there quickly, but yet completely secluded. We loved our stay here. Beautiful views of both scenery and wildlife. We saw deer, turkey a llama and of course the sheep and lovable livestock gaurdian that reside on the property. Communication with the property owner was just right. Plenty of information but unobtrusive at the same time. Easy check in and out. We would absolutely stay here again.

Birthday Weekend
It was a great location. Close enough to enjoy all Fredericksburg has to offer, while still being able to enjoy the piece and quiet of the country. It was nice to wake up and relax on the porch while having a cup of coffee. The house was very cute, and had everything we needed. The beds were comfortable. The only con was that there’s no insulation between floors, so every sound made by anyone in the upstairs bedroom was amplified. I would recommend, and would definitely stay again!

About the host

Hosted by Beverly Carnes

Host profile image
Beverly and Tom Carnes are the owners of Agarita Creek, a Hill Country Ranch Retreat located just outside of Fredericksburg, Texas. Beverly grew up on her parent's ranch in Fredericksburg, just north of and down the hill from Agarita Creek. She and Tom spent most of their working lives in Houston, but moved to the farm full time in 2008. Tom is a local attorney and volunteer deejay on a local radio station, in addition to helping out on the ranch. Beverly is primarily occupied with the running of the ranch and assisting ranch guests.

Why they chose this property

Beverly and Tom planned for years to move to this ranch, which is part of a larger ranch previously owned and operated by Beverly's parents. This land means much to her, and has become to mean just as much to Tom.

The terrain is extremely varied, with pasture land, cliffs and hills, woods, and a creek canyon. There is abundant wildlife. There is virtually every kind of plant life native to the hill country. For a relatively small ranch, it provides tremendous diversity to explore.

Fredericksburg itself is a great town to live near. Because of its popularity with tourists, there are things here in town that are just not found in other similarly sized towns; things like a large number of good and different restaurants, diverse shopping opportunities, wine tourism, theater, and live music everywhere you go. It provides a great mix of small town life with big city attributes. Beverly and Tom are proud to call Fredericksburg home, and have never looked back!

What makes this property unique

Agarita Creek is located on 170 acres, and is a working sheep ranch in addition to being a guest ranch. The cabins and the main house sit high on a bluff overlooking a creek canyon on the property and the Pedernales River Valley.

Because there are only two guest cabins on the property, Agarita Creek offers privacy and solitude, when that is sought, while still being only ten minutes from the heart of Fredericksburg. Guests can truly be alone at Agarita Creek, to reconnect -- with themselves, and with their loved ones. Guests truly have the run of the ranch. Guests can explore the ranch and its wildlife, livestock, and varied flora and fauna, and doing so can be as easy or active as is desired. The level of effort required is dictated by the terrain one chooses to explore, and it ranges from easy to moderately difficult.

Unlike many B & B's, Agarita Creek encourages children. The ranch provides an opportunity for children, especially urban kids, to experience just a little bit of rural life. Kids of all ages are invited to participate in farm activities if and as they wish. We have found that nothing brings a smile to a child's face faster than gathering eggs or feeding bottle lambs! We have the pictures to prove it!

But Agarita Creek is not just a great place for kids and family, it is also a great romantic getaway. Privacy and seclusion mean that there will be very few people on the property at any given time. There is room between the cabins, and acres and acres for guests to explore. At Agarita Creek other guests do not impact your trip unless you want them to do so -- and there have been lots of "friend" connections made between guests at the ranch.

The main thing about a visit to Agarita Creek is you choose. You choose the balance between activity and inactivity, and between city and country. You can be busy, or choose to do nothing more than watch the sun set from your private front porch. It is all up to you.
