Very clean and tidy little cabin on the lake. Beds were super comfy. We really enjoyed our brief visit. Susan was super helpful. Will keep this place in mind for our next visit. Keep in mind that what you carry down the stairs will have to be care back up!
Excellent stay. Clean and well stocked for a quick weekend in the dunes! It’s literally outside the entrance to both state and national dunes parks. We stayed two nights and had plenty of time to do a lot of hiking. The beach and Lake Michigan are visible from all angles of the house and is spectacular views! Lots of waves!
We had a wonderful time at this quiet cottage, tucked away down the dune right on the beach. It was just perfect to come back and relax here after a day hiking in the national park. Susan was great- flexible on meeting up to let us in, even helped us carry down our bags. Would definitely stay again.
My family and I stayed here for a little family getaway. Wonderful property, that sits in between the State and National park with unbelievable views! The house was very clean and had everything we needed. Susan was very accommodating and a wonderful host. Would recommend this place to anyone!
The location was just incredible. I honestly do not think there is a better option in terms of location - it was walking distance to the State Park and about 7-10 minute drive from everything else you would need! The views were incredible and being able to walk right directly out to the Lake was very convenient. The only negative is that there are a lot of stairs, but also there is not really a way around that because of the way the dunes are naturally, just don't overpack!
This is such a lovely place to stay. The house, the lake and National Park were amazing! We ventured into Michigan and visited the tulip festival in Holland, Michigan. While in Michigan we also visited a few light houses. The host Susan is incredibly nice and even helped us carry some of our luggage down the stairs to our rental. This house is close to the National Park, hiking trials, grocery stores and places to eat. The views are incredible from the house and the sunsets are amazing! Don't think twice! Book a stay today!
This was a wonderful place to stay! It was the perfect size for our family of 5. The location was perfect, it is right on a beautiful and large beach area that was not crowded. It's super close to the parks and there are good areas around for food and shopping. Susan was a great host, we felt welcomed and she was very responsive when we needed anything. The only downside is that it is a shared unit, so other people stay in the downstairs unit, and you can smell the food they cook and have the same common area with the grill and firepit. It was not an issue for us, the price was much better than fully private places and we had plenty of beach room and still had our own beach area.

Hello Jenna, Thank you for your review. I’m glad you enjoyed your stay and the beach and all the wonderful restaurants and shopping in the area. I’m sorry if I neglected to point out where your grill and fire pit is. Each rental does have their own grill and fire pit and it was my mistake not to show you where yours were. We are committed to providing as private an accommodation as we can in a beach house with an upstairs and a downstairs unit. The only common shared space is the beach. And you are right, the beach is huge this year so there is plenty of room to spread out. Again, thank you for your review and we hope to see you and your family again.
This property is a rare example where the photos don't do it justice. It's rustic but certainly doesn't feel old or rundown, and the beachfront proximity is incredible in almost any weather.
Check-in was very straightforward, and the host offered to help carry our bags down the (many) flights of stairs from the elevated street to the beach. House was reasonably stocked for a short visit, and the abundant firewood offered for use was perfect for our fall visit. One thing to note is that the infrastructure reflects the fact that Dune Acres is a tiny town carved out of the middle of a large forest, and the power and internet can blip out during storms -- but you're not at the beach to sit online, so not a big deal!
The beachfront cafe at the state park is less than a 10 minute stroll along the beach, and another few minutes takes you into the park itself with all of the great trails and hiking that comes with it.
Overall, we'd love to stay here again. The biggest thing to note is that it is not ideal for those with mobility issues or little people who may not be able to climb a lot of stairs to get back to the street (and then a bit further up a hill to the parking area), but that did not bother us.
This was a lovely home right on the water of Lake Michigan. We stayed in early November so we did not go in the water but the beach was lovely and the waves for the week we were there made it feel like the ocean.
The beds were comfortable and warm
The kitchen was well appointed
The bath is adequate. The water was hot and all of the plumbing worked great (not always a given at a beach house)
The living and dining area was comfortable enough for our group of 4 with a singe couch and 1 chair but a larger group might not be comfy for long.
Access is at the bottom of a longgggg staircase (about 50-75 steps) and then through sand. Not for the faint of heart or weak of knee :). But if you can get there it is totally worth the trip!
We will definitely stay again
The cottage was very well-kept, and the view is great. No issues with the cottage itself.
VRBO seems to pride itself on the traveller being able to rent the entire house; this was not the case. While we rented upstairs, another group rented the downstairs. The listing did say this. However; in my opinion, it should be more obvious and state, in the listing title, that it is top floor only. We wouldn't have rented had we known it wouldn't have been completely private.
Another issue we had was communication with the owner. She mentioned she believed no one was staying the day we checked out so we could stay as long as we would like. She said she would double check; we didn't hear from her until one hour before checkout, that we needed to leave. That made our last hour a stressful one.
I would love to stay in someone like this cottage again, but it will not be this one.
We had a lovely stay at this cottage, which is located in a wonderful spot, right on the lake. Everything that we needed was there for us and we enjoyed our stay tremendously.
The cottage was even more comfortable and idyllic than I had imagined. Clearly, the owner takes excellent care of her properties and makes them a relaxing oasis for visitors. We had views of the water from almost all of the windows and instant access to the beach. We love this place and will return.
Wow! What a gem right on the sand. The unit was clean and had everything you need (bedding, kitchen stuff, games). The whole family had a wonderful time swimming, hunting for rocks, and playing in the sand. The stairs… there are a lot of them so pack light or expect a strong cardio workout. Can’t wait to come again!
The view and location couldn't get any better! We were steps away from the private beach and could easily walk to the dunes national park.
Our 3 and 5 year olds were happy to find an extra set of beach toys to borrow during our stay. And, despite the many steps down to the cottage, they were able to easily (albeit slowly!) Go up and down.
My sister, Ericka, and I manage our beach cottages which have been in our family since the 1920’s. It is our goal to create an environment in each cottage that is as unique and beautiful as the Indiana Dunes are themselves. And, when you are ready to step beyond the beach and magnificent Lake Michigan, whether you are interested in birding, hiking, theme parks, fairs, antiquing, shopping or museums we will gladly point you in the direction of any one of our areas numerous natural and cultural treasures.
What makes this property unique
The Indiana Dunes region is known for its beautiful beaches along Lake Michigan (the fifth largest fresh water lake in the world). Just beyond those beaches lie some of the world's largest sand dunes, created by glacial deposits, lake currents and wind. This is an area rich in history, ecological diversity, outdoor fun and family friendly small-town charm. When you are ready to take a break from swimming, playing on the beach and climbing the sand dunes there are many excellent restaurants, cafes, shops, museums and other inland charms to discover and enjoy.
