About this property
Stable House at Grey Towers, 1.5 hours from NYC. Milford, Pa.
"Like going to France without the travel!" The Stable House is located on a historic 20 acre property adjacent to a forest with waterfall. It is a 2 bedroom, one-bath residence with large front porch, walled garden with swimming pool and adjacent forest with trails. There is another house on the property, The Foresters Cottage (VRBO #430708), also rentable, whose renters, if present, may also use the pool.
The Stable House living room is cozy with plate glass window, recessed bookshelves and fireplace. Full kitchen includes dishwasher and appliances. This is a great family house 1.5 hours from Manhattan.
The Stable House was once a part of the historic 19th century French country estate owned by the Pinchot family. The original property included the Stable House, the adjacent Forester's Cottage (still in use and rentable for larger groups) and Grey Towers, a 43-room turreted chateau designed by Richard Morris Hunt that is now an environmental research center and museum. The Stable House overlooks a two-acre walled garden with its Italian urns, box hedges, fruit trees, open lawn and beautifully landscaped swimming pool for guests to use, tucked discreetly out of sight. Beyond the far side of the garden wall lie the forested hills & valleys of the Poconos, a half-mile from the charming, historic town of Milford, Pennsylvania and the Delaware River.
Securely situated behind a wrought-iron electronic gate, the Stable House and Foresters Cottage combined provide a unique setting for family gatherings and reunions, corporate retreats, film-making, writers, artists, environmentalists, history buffs, yoga retreats, and many other possibilities.
An 1/8 mile walk from the Stable House into a hemlock forest brings you to the only privately owned waterfall of its size on the east coast . This 50-foot waterfall courses through a cathedral of ancient moss-covered cliffs carved by a mountain stream. No swimming is allowed in the stream. Guests must sign a liability waiver to enter the forest.
The Stable House sits on a privately owned 20-acre property that includes exclusive access to these features. Only 70 miles from New York City this property resonates with history and a quiet, natural grandeur.
The adjacent property, Grey Towers, now owned by the U.S. Forest Service, has extensive landscaped gardens and a beautiful ground floor museum dedicated to Gifford Pinchot, one of America’s first conservationists and a former Governor of Pennsylvania. You will feel like a 19th century guest of the Pinchots as you stroll through the beautiful gardens and grounds of Grey Towers. Visit the “Finger Bowl”, a wisteria-covered dining table where the guests floated the food on wooden bowls as they sat around the bluestone edge. You can take a tour of the original mansion, beautifully restored to its original state in 2001.
Milford, PA is a former mill town founded on the Delaware River in 1796. It attracts visitors for its fine dining,, inns, antiques and galleries. Atlantic Magazine called Milford “the prettiest county seat in America.”

Grandchildren of the Pinchot family still own this 20 acres of land and we are happy to make available the Forester's Cottage especially to environmental buffs who will appreciate the historical importance of this site that housed Gifford Pinchot's first Forestry School.
