About this property

Charming Vintage Lakeside 4-bedroom Cottage

Magical property on Lake Leelanau comes with waterfront and dock with sandy bottom swimming area and raft and large lawn and outdoor areas. The cottage is a vintage charmer with four bedrooms-one oversized bedroom with a king, and three others with twin-beds in each. All bedrooms have individual air conditioners. There is a great-room style living, dining and sitting/working area with 1 gig internet and Orbi mesh Wi-Fi network, large smart tv with streaming, a porch with spectacular views of the lake containing both dining and sitting areas, as well as a separate playroom (with a separate Dish satellite TV and where we keep snorkel gear and other beach toys) off the classic but updated eat-in kitchen, including dishwasher and coffee bar. There is an outdoor grill by the kitchen side door. There is one full and one-half bathroom plus an outdoor shower. The lakeshore has a swimming area, dock with sitting area, kayaks and paddle boards (with life jackets for all by the laundry room), and swimming raft. Plenty of room to tie up a boat to the dock and a mooring for jet ski. On the shore is a sandy area with firepit-perfect for smores. There is parking for 4 cars and a laundry room in the separate garage building. You are within a mile of the village of Lake Leelanau and within a short drive of so many of NW Michigan’s finest attractions-Fishtown and Leland, Lake Michigan beaches, hiking trails, the Sand Dunes, Suttons Bay and Northport restaurants, many excellent Vineyards, breweries and tasting rooms, as well as Traverse City and Interlochen Arts Academy where you can hear and see performances by the talented music camp students.
This is very much a multi-generational area, and voices travel at night on the water, so we request quiet after 10 pm on weekdays and 11 pm on weekends. No smoking, large parties, indoor fires, candles, or pets (sorry). Stays are by the week with a one-week minimum.
There is an additional more rustic cabin available next door which sleeps 8 comfortably if you are planning a family reunion and need more space which can be rented separately.

Why they chose this property

These are family cottages which were and still are part of a colony of relatives. Some of them were part of the original Colony, as described in Hayward Draper's recent book; the rest are an extension down the cottage line. This creates a feeling that you are part of a much larger space with open views and magnificent vistas over the lake. Aside from Fountain Point, very few houses can be seen across the lake and there is a feeling of great privacy, especially in the early am. But it was the good fishing that brought our family here in the first place. (You can get a fishing permit at Dick's Pour House in Lake Leelanau.) the location is close to everything

What makes this property unique

It is magical. In the early am the lake is often like glass, and it usually stays calm enough for perfect conditions for water skiing and other water sports like paddleboarding or sculling. (The Leelanau Rowing Club is also across the lake if you want to scull or row.)
For nature lovers, I counted 40 different bird species last summer, some rare, according to the Merlin Bird ID app.
It stays light late in summer, up to nearly 10pm, so the days are long with extra time for outdoors.
