About this property
Spacious, pet-free mountain retreat perfect for hosting groups on 15 acres
Rent our spacious, pet-free mountain home with towering fieldstone fireplace! 4 bedrooms sleeps 12 comfortably, 3 full baths. Upgrades to enhance your comfort made Spring 2025: all new decks and native perennial gardens, 2nd and 3rd floors renovated (hardwood flooring, painting, furniture in living room, lighting), new bathroom with accessible shower, 65” tv for sports or gaming, queen mattress main floor, workspace, linens & towels across house.
Hike, ski, swim in and around Waterbury and Stowe, enjoy famous craft beer & don't miss out on our restaurants with locally sourced produce and meats!
We host groups of 6-12 comfortably. 6 guests included in base rate, plus additional $50/night after 6 guests due to costs of hot water, heat and cleaning.
Thirty-two hundred square feet, four bedroom home with mountain views of Hunger Mountain, fireplace. Beautiful sunsets.
Views from every room! Main floor master has a queen bed for those with mobility issue and shower across the hall, upstairs master has a king bed, full futon and full bath ensuite. Downstairs has two rooms that share a full bathroom - each with a king and queen/double bed. There are three full baths total available and an on-demand hot water heater so you wont run out of hot water!
Continental breakfast included: cereal, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and your choice of milk (let us know); plus DIY King Arthur buttermilk pancake mix & VT maple syrup OR a delicious quiche from our friend's french bakery and cafe in Morrisville - Goldfinch Gourmet. You won't want to miss this new spot to get your own French country-style takeout meals like pate & crostini, beef stew, macaron, croissaint, soups and salads.
Skyline Trail is a ridge walk linking three major peaks of the Worcester Range - Mount Hunger, Hogback Mountain and Mount Worcester. The trail is 8.9 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 2,511 vertical feet. This trail is heavily forested. Since it receives little foot traffic, it is a prime spot to see animals. There have been many moose sightings in this area.
The home is the first house after the Stowe border and is located in Waterbury Center on the "scenic byway." It's close to the Alchemist brewery (maker of top ranked beer "Heady Topper,"), Stowe Cider & Shakedown Street pub, Idlethyme pub, American Flatbread, Michael's on the Hill Restaurant, Ben & Jerry's Tour, Cold Hollow Cider Mill, Cabot Outlet and Danforth Pewter. In Waterbury, eat at Hen of the Wood, Gallus handcrafted pasta, or Prohibition Pig. In Stowe, enjoy an awesome meal at American Flatbread, Doc Pond's or Stowe Cider! Many markets and take out dinner nearby. We have jazz and new music at The Phoenix Gallery & Music Hall and lots of other entertainment options. Theater options abound in the summer and enjoy an outdoor concert every week in Stowe and throughout the summer with Vermont Symphony Orchestra at Trapp Family Lodge meadow.
Birding, hiking, mountain biking await you, 10 minutes to downtown Stowe and 25 minutes to Mt. Mansfield. 30 minutes to Bolton, 35 min to Sugarbush slopes. Acres of cross country skiing, mountain biking and snowshoe trails on site. See neighboring farms (horses, sheep, cows) with the kids. Swimming holes and ponds in driving distance. We have a creek and a brook on site - ask for walking directions.
The proximity- 12 minutes to Rte. 89, 10 minutes to downtown Stowe (house sits on the southern border of Stowe). 25 minutes to Stowe Mountain, 30 minutes to Bolton Valley, 45 to Mad River and Sugarbush. 3 hours to Boston,
Four wheel drive vehicle necessary during winter months.
You are very likely to see the following during your stay: wild turkeys in large numbers, families of deer, black bears, moose in spring, bobcat in summer (if quiet), birds including rarities like Bobolink, Savannah Sparrow, Wilson's Snipe and Belted Kingfisher.

There is a second major hiking trail called the Stowe Pinnacle Trail which is accessed from the lower parking lot. This trail is 2.8 miles. The view from the top of Stowe Pinnacle is absolutely breathtaking! The summit has a spectacular 360 degree panoramic view. You can see many mountains from the summit - the Green Mountains, Camel’s Hump, the Bolton Range, the Nebraska Notch, Mt. Mansfield, the Sterling Mountain Range, the Worcester Range and Hogback Mountain. You can access Hogback Mountain via the Hogback Trail at this location.

About the host
Hosted by Laura Fried
Owen and Laura have been hosts for many years, mostly on another platform, where we have an excellent rating and several dozen reviews.
We have lived in Vermont since 2005, raising our two children here where they enjoy outdoor education and any activity taking place in the mountains. Laura spent her toddler years in Warren, Vermont, learning to ski at age 2, just like her children.
We decided in 2024 to put our family home on VRBO. We enjoy helping our guests navigate the area, learn the secret spots, find the best take out and restaurants (some require booking well ahead of your stay).
We are available for guided hikes/snowshoes and first time ski lessons on the magic carpet at Stowe - please inquire.
We enjoy staying in homes when we travel, and in 2024 went to New Zealand and England. Laura has lived in Japan, Thailand, and Singapore. Owen has lived in Mexico. We also enjoy traveling in Canada each summer. We love camping as well!

Why they chose this property
When Stowe put our road on it's Scenic Byway it was no coincidence. This is the road parallel to Rte 100 (the only road into Stowe from the highway). And it's a gorgeous straight shot across a mountain valley with wide expanses and farms. Many think foliage is the best season. Spring ephemerals are magical in nearby mountain trails, summer has backcountry biking and hiking, and winter has skiing and snowshoeing. Our house has a secret entrance to a local backcountry ski network - that is what we mean by "ski in/ski out" for those adventurous to avoid lift service. We are the first house next to the Stowe town line, so expect a quieter time with less traffic and more nature/expansive views of the Hunger Mountain range.
What makes this property unique
Guests always tell us "this house is bigger than it seems from the photos." Or "we love the charm of this cabin." With a surprise bonus suite in the basement, there's plenty of places to spread out.
Guests also love the apple orchard, the mountain views, the neighborhood farms, the brook and trails along it. The sunrises behind the mountain, and the sun sets that light up the mountain pink. And don't forget the clear skies without any light pollution for stargazing. The proximity to Waterbury and Stowe, and even Burlington/Montpelier.
