About this property

Lake Front Cottage Facing Acadia National Park on the "Quiet Side" of Mt. Desert

Located in Seal Cove on the 'quiet side' of Mount Desert Island, this cottage at Hodgdon Pond Farm offers proximity to all the other attractions of the island and Acadia National Park. The 3 double bedroom/ 2 bath cottage with sleeping loft shares 7.4 acres and 800 plus or minus feet of shore front on Hodgdon Pond with Cottage 2, which is about 2/3rds of a football field away. (Please see 924253VB). The opposite shore of the lake is owned and protected by the National Park. Wildlife is abundant and guests frequently see osprey, Bald eagles, kingfisher and many other birds as well as deer, beaver, muskrat, and sometimes otter and moose.

The cottage has its own dock, canoe, two kayaks, two Stand-up Paddle Boards, and a rowboat. Swimming is best from the rocks on the opposite shore, and from a swim float in the lake. There is a charcoal grill, picnic table and outdoor furniture as well as a hammock overlooking the lake, Satellite TV and Internet. We now keep a section of the lower field mowed, and there is a storage box containing outdoor games for renters to enjoy. Note this is shared with people in Cottage 2, and there are posted house rules for using the games. PLEASE CHECK WITH ME ABOUT OUR CANCELLATION POLICY because it is very different from the one indicated by VRBO.

There are also two small ponds, a sitting area, swing set and sandbox on the property that are shared with people in Cottage 2.

Wherever possible, we use 'Green' cleaning products, provide supplies made from recycled paper, LED bulbs, and implement other ways to reduce our impact on the environment. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has certified Hodgdon Pond Farm is an 'Environmental Leader' as designated by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

Though there are beds for 7 people, we limit occupancy to 6 people, but occasionally permit a 7th person for an additional charge of $250.

Peaceful Oasis on the Quiet Side
We had an amazing week here, with everything we needed for our family of 7. The house was packed with toys, puzzles, books, and activities for the whole family; the kitchen and bathrooms were well-stocked and more than adequate for us. Beds were comfy and just what we needed. The property is beautiful and quiet, and we enjoyed all the boats and the access to the beautiful pond. We were there just after Labor Day and had the whole pond to ourselves and another family or two. Highly recommended if you want to be on MDI without the crowds and chaos!

Quiet but close to it all!
This was a great place to stay to have the peace and quiet of the island but also be close to all the experiences of Acadia! We loved our week in Maine.

Perfection.
This place is perfect. Complete privacy. Love that the entire time we were there we never saw another person on the water out front.

Relaxing paradise
The HPF cottage was perfect for our stay. The whole place was very clean and we enjoyed the at-home feel of it. It was a short drive to Acadia and the Park Loop Road. We enjoyed Thurstons Lobster Pound for dinner, which was about a 15 minute drive from the cottage. Our 2 year old appreciated the toys Barbara had at the house (he loved the pull along froggy), and we loved that she had a pack & play and booster seat for him there. The weather didn't cooperate for us to swim but we enjoyed the canoe on the property and loved that there were several small watercraft options to choose from. We loved our peaceful time at HPF and would absolutely return!

I'm a summer kid who fell in love with Mount Desert Island and lived there year-round for 15 years. After many years and many travels, I still think of it as home. My first novel and sixth book, 'Islands of Time,' is set on Mount Desert Island. Linda Greenlaw, NYT best-selling author said, 'I really like it. It's a love-song to the people and landscape of Maine.' The sequel "The Other Island: Ben's Story" was published in 2017, and I'm proud that Greenlaw and other fine authors have liked it as well.

Why they chose this property

I was attracted to this property, formerly a hunting and fishing camp, because the ad boasted abundant wildlife. When I first saw Hodgdon Pond Farm, I realized proximity to Acadia National Park gave it enduring protection and privacy, and yet it was convenient to everything else on the island.

What makes this property unique

I love reading in the hammock beside the lake, and listening to the sounds of the birds and animals - the trill of tree frogs, keening of loons, and the querulous calls of osprey that always sound as if they are trying to get children off to school. Sometimes I hear a beaver slap the water with its tail, and sometimes ravens loudly scolding an eagle. The bullfrogs, Kingfisher, and warblers add to this ever changing, ever fascinating serenade. I also love sitting in one of the Adirondack chairs near the Little Ponds. The last time I was there I watched a mother duck and four very small duckings paddling to the bridge with the beaver dam. When they got very close a mink lunged out from under the bridge - but missed them all. Another time I was weeding the garden between the ponds when an otter stood up about ten feet from me, clutching a frog in its paws, which it then crunched as it rested in the culvert. These experiences carry me through a long winter!
