"Tranquility Base" is a place where you can lose yourself in the beauty, peace, and quiet of nature as land, sea and sky meet on rugged midcoast Maine. PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS ONE WINDOW AIR CONDITIONER, because very few people on the peninsula have central ac since the water surrounding us greatly moderates the temperature. On those few days when it does get hot, in addition to the window ac unit, we have fans that will help pull the cooler ocean air through the apartment. Mountains beckon on the horizon from your apartment windows, as saltwater laps against giant granite boulders. Summery mountain breezes carry the scent of pine trees and tangy salt air through your window. Nearby lighthouses, museums, antique shops, restaurants, and a range of gourmet to simple general stores entice you. Numerous parks and trails offer opportunities for exploration and exercise, including our own one-mile circle loop through the woods and by the water. Your guest apartment is located just outside the picturesque town of Tenants Harbor. It’s 20 minutes from Rockland, and 30 minutes to Camden. The Portland and Acadia National Parks are each a one hour and 30 minute drive. Canada is only three hours to the north. The Port Clyde General Store, where you can get Lobster Benedict for breakfast, is a brief, beautiful, five minute drive. Kayak rentals can be had there too. The East Wind Inn is close by and offers a delicious lobster dinner. Among the many lighthouses is the famous Marshall Point Light, backdrop in the movie "Forrest Gump." Don't miss the best swordfish and local oysters in the world at the award winning "Primo" Restaurant just 20 minutes away. The area has an epicurean feast of great places to dine.
The apartment is a modern second story walk-up with a full bath, two bedrooms, one with a very comfortable queen size mattress and the other with two twins, a full size antique slate top pool table, an efficiency kitchen with a large microwave and a large convection toaster oven and other small appliances as well as a washer and dryer and full size stainless steel refrigerator with ice and water in the door. Free internet and satellite TV.
It is located on the banks of the salt water St. George River, with lobster traps and boats right out back. Across the salt water river is the Olson Homestead, site of the Andrew Wyeth painting "Christina's World", and a museum of his paintings is in nearby Rockland. Bring your hiking gear, and camera with plenty of storage for pictures, and an appetite for fresh Maine cuisine.
In the apartment you will find notebooks with information on local dining, shopping, hiking, boating, museums.
Kayak rentals nearby. Swimming and fishing in the salt water right behind the house are possible. See details that can be found at the end of the amenities section of this listing.

About the host
Hosted by Stephanie Polky

I am a retired Airline Pilot and U.S. Air Force Officer and Pilot. My wife is a former public school teacher. Over the years we have traveled the entire world. We have been fortunate to be able to live where we choose and not be tied down to where we worked.
For much of the year the west coast of Florida on the water is our primary home. My wife spent much of her young life growing up in New England and had roots there too. So it was natural that she was attracted to that area also. After years of looking we found the house on the lot with the location, view and neighborhood we were looking for. The tall evergreen and colorful deciduous trees in the fall, the smell of clean salt air and the amazing quiet all surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the state of Maine made this a natural for a home away from home for us to go on a seasonal basis. We made friends with a nearby couple to rent the place, primarily when we are not there, after spending two years renovating and modernizing the spacious attached upstairs apartment. The center piece inside is the full size antique pool table. The focal point out side is the breathtaking Maine coast view right out back. Huge granite boulders, sea grass at the low point of 20 foot tides, lobster and lobster boats a clam shell toss away, with wading birds, the occasional seal and a passing bald eagle are all part of the Maine magic of this special place. Often the soulful sound of loons is heard drifting on that salt air. The distant mountains behind Camden are occasionally blocked by the sea fog rolling in. If ever there was a place to lose yourself and find peace, this is it.

Why they chose this property
After nearly two decades of looking and several offers on other properties we finally came upon this one. After your stay you will understand why this was the one we were always looking for.
What makes this property unique
As they say in the real estate business, "it is all about location", and this is a very special location in the middle of "Mid coast Maine. Half way between The New Hampshire border and Canada. Right on the water. It is literally a day trip to everywhere in Maine and much of New England. Its location by so much beauty and history make it the perfect place to anchor your Maine adventure and just relax, not say a word, silence your cell phone, or see how many times it will skip like a stone on the river and soon you will actually hear your heart beat.
