About this property
Private oceanside cottage with magnificent views!
Located on the mainland at the Ocean's edge in a beautiful cove looking out at Clark Island and the open sea, our cottage was built in the classic rustic Maine style of the mid twentieth Century. The Township of Clark Island is one of a group of small Towns located on the St. George Peninsula. The peninsula is alive with boaters, bicycle clubs on vacation and legions of kayakers visiting Penobscot Bay.
From the little lobstering village of Port Clyde at one end (with daily ferry service to Monhegan Island) to the Town of Rockland at the other end (in 2009 voted the second best small town to live in in the USA by Budget Travel; ) the whole area is considered the heart of mid-coast Maine. At the foot of the road the cottage is located on, there is the Craignair Inn of Clark Island, with a gourmet restaurant. This area is why they call Maine 'Vacationland, where life is the way it ought to be.'
Easy to get to: Knox County airport is 5 miles from the cottage, with up to 8 direct flights daily to Boston's Logan airport on Cape Air Airlines. Under $70 each way, with car rental available at airport. Or drive from Boston in under 4 hours.
Ferry to Nova Scotia from Rockland. Hourly, daily or weeklong schooner tours from Rockland and Camden.

Why they chose this property
Ownership now resides in Trust for a third generation and soon a fourth, ensuring family use for more generations to come. This is a classic Maine cottage, built in the 1950s in that style that has almost disappeared due to the high cost of waterfront land and the McMansions being built as the original cottages disappear. Fifty feet from the water's edge, with a screened porch enabling sitting outside and listening to the ocean, the cottage has been thoroughly updated and modernized, but still captures that era when waterfront cottages were part of nature, not castles to sit in and look out at it.
Everything one needs for lobster and clam cookouts on the rocks, barbecues plus a fire-pit for s'mores, and views across to Clark Island and the open sea.
Large windows from the bedrooms on the ocean side offer views unchanged from the day it was built.
Watch the lobster boats right out front; kayak from right out front, or just watch the constant activity of the seagulls, seals, osprey, fox, deer, even an occasional moose and a family of eagles. This is the heart and the essence of mid-coast Maine living.
'Maine, the way life ought to be.'
