One of the oldest VRBO listings in Nevada City, we have over 100 5-star reviews since 2013 on VRBO and Airbnb. Check out our feedback from previous guests in our review section.

Looking forward to something different than a cookie cutter home or room with spartan decor and discount department store or Big Box furnishings? Look thru our many pictures to find charm and coziness for you and or your family clan. Our 6 person hot tub and private lake close can be a treat for your eyes, your body and soul.
Every season has attractions at our home and in our Victorian era town of Nevada City. (Especially during year round celebrations with a small town feel).

We are pet friendly (dogs, cats, parrots) as we know that pets are part of your family and need vacations too. (please, a maximum of 2 at a time - must be housebroken, not left at property (unless placed in crate or enclosure) no chasers or puppies)

Two large bedrooms are upstairs (with Queen sized beds, with pull out twin and full sized sleeper sofas) along with a master bathroom suite with a shower stall with his and hers sinks.

Downstairs bedrooms feature a Queen sized bed in one room, and a pair of bunk beds in the game room with an additional Queen sized sleeper sofa.

Living room also has a Queen sized sleeper sofa close to the woodstove, perfect for those nights when the snow's coming down and you just want to cuddle up with your favorite person or persons. Full size HD TV to take in the game or movies while lounging in bed.

Downstairs bathroom has a tub shower with period furnishings and wallcoverings. Upstairs bathroom has a modern stall shower and dual sinks.

Both bathrooms feature pull chain wall mounted toilets' and premium resort quality extra soft and plush towels.

Handicapped or disabled access to house easily made from upper driveway by covered level ramp to front wrap-around porch and deck. House (main level), porch and deck now wheelchair accessible. Please contact owners for more information about interior accessibility.

Unbelievable year round living with cozy Spring, comfortable Summers, and heartwarming Fall and Wintertime ambiance surround the countryside around Camp Run-A-Muck.

Located within a short 3 minute walk to our local lake, the featured house is located on a short, quiet, up hill cul-de-sac, where we're surrounded by mature evergreen trees that even grow through our huge wraparound deck, which can be the perfect place to relax with your morning coffee, a place in the fresh air to start your day, an evening destination for a cocktail or two, or a stop over on your way to luxuriate in the 4 - 6 person hot tub on the lower deck.

After your day is finally done, retire to your private comfortably appointed luxurious bedrooms (with European Style featherbed mattresses or Tempurpedic foundations. 560 - 680 thread count sheets with down like and down alternative memory pillows that will cradle you for the ultimate in a good night's rest.

All bedrooms come with flat screen HDTV's, Blu-Ray DVD players and stereo systems.,
Comcast channels on living room TV only. All other bedroom TV's are Chromecast enabled.

To take off the evening chill, the house comes with two propane fireplaces along with a high efficiency wood stove in the main living room.

All bedrooms have ceiling fans and cozy electric baseboard heating, perfect for those of you that like to sleep with your windows open.

The master bedroom comes with one of the two gas fireplaces so you don't have haul firewood to create a 'spark'.

Our lake has a upgraded multi-million dollar boat concreted launch ramp, which will be perfect to put in your ski boat, sailboat, or fishing boat. As it's a drinking water reservoir, jet skis and sea-doos are not allowed. Calif. State Mussel inspection in force.

The San Francisco Chronicle newspaper has described our lake (which is called Scott's Flat Reservoir), as one of the Sierra Nevada's best kept secrets.

At approximately 760 acres, the lake is roughly 3 1/2 X 1 mile long with up to 7 miles of shoreline. It is actually large enough that a resident fleet of sailboats can dot the water's surface during the sailing season. Most mornings, the lake's water is like glass.....

Wildlife and solitude abound here. Bald eagles, ospreys, geese, deer and coyotes are residents here along with the occasional bear, mountain lion, bobcat and fox. Watch where you step!

A local community store is within easy walking distance (perfect for the morning or an after dinner stroll). Downtown Nevada City is approximately 10 - 12 minutes away by car.

Most days and nights (with the exception of the boating season), there can be little to no noise except the wind in the trees. It's hard to describe that to those that live in a world of 'white noise'.

Come, we invite you and your family friends, co-workers or that someone special to escape to our retreat from the real world. It truly can be a retreat to relax, refresh and recharge your body and your inner spirit.

Whether your life is full, or you're now looking for something off the beaten path, we look forward to providing you an fulfilling experience very few people may ever be able to have, where ever you hail from. Our retreat is as nice as Lake Tahoe, but closer to where you may come from, and without the noise, the traffic and the crowds.

Zenful Retreat

We loved everything! The house is stocked with everything you need. The location was absolutely serene--exactly what we all needed. Scott's Lake is gorgeous, but the secret watering hole was the best! We are already talking about coming again next year. Can't wait to come back!

Great house for City getaway

This house was more than we expected, hot tub, right by the lake, comfortable, cosy, with great attention to detail and the comfort of guests. The location is excellent for any time of the year. Craig was generous and accomodating and even returned some items we had left behind at no cost to us. We hope to return.

Great Getaway by Lake

Very comfortable home, lots of fans provided and wonderful deck to sit on to watch birds and deer in the forest. Everything was very clean and notes on how to use appliances were helpful. There is no air conditioning but house never got too warm despite the outdoor temperature around 95 degrees. It cooled off at night so screened in windows and ceiling fans made sleeping quite comfortable. Nice we could walk to lake.

Heaven on earth

Our family needed a breather from the daily rigors and we found Craig and Caroline's listing for their home at Scotts Flat. It was everything and more than we hoped for. We had such a wonderful time at their home. The kids loved it as well. The home was so welcoming and comfortable. Loved the views and surrounding nature and lake. The whole family was asking when we can make plans to return to the same home. Thank you for the wonderful experience.

Great Lake House!

This is our second time staying at this house. It’s a very short walk down to the lake. The house is in a beautiful spot with mature trees all around it. It is off the main road so it is quiet. Caroline and Craig are very responsive and easy to deal with. We would definitely rent again.

Perfect for family and boating

This property was perfect for 4 adults and three toddlers. We have a pontoon boat; it was very easy to park and only a block from the launch ramp. Scott's Valley is a great lake, lots of places to pull the boat to the shore and watch the kids play. Good communication with the manager and everything was well labeled, plentry of dishes and the pantry well stocked.

Amazing Stay

What a great getaway! Cabin was perfect for our family for the 4th. Plenty of rooms and the hosts thought of everything. And I mean everything! We ran out of baby wipes and even those were available. Walk down to the lake which was gorgeous. Hosts were very accommodating when we needed to extend our stay by a day and even a few hours on the last day. We so appreciated it!

Great Family Wedding Digs

Camp Run amuck was a perfect base for family members attending a wedding in Nevada City. The place was immaculate and the owners provided wonderful extras including chocolate and wine on arrival. There is a huge hot tub, well appointed kitchen and comfortable mattresses. We walked to the lake and swam in a swimming hole which was only a five minute walk away. The owners helped with several small details. This is a good bet for an extended family event!

Perfect Bachelorette Party Getaway

I was looking for a house in the Nevada City area to celebrate my calm and relaxing bachelorette party and Camp-Run-a-Muck was perfect! Craig was amazing, he gave us a tour of the house, showed us how to hook up our iPods to the stereo system and he even gave us a box of chocolate! By day walked to Scott's Flat Lake (which is only 3 mins away by foot) to go swimming and by night we sat on their beautiful porch and soaked in the hot tub. It was the perfect house to celebrate with my girlfriends, quiet neighborhood, beautiful views, ideal location and the house it just too cute. I liked to go back right now...

Wonderful birthday weekend!

We had 2 infants, 8 adults and 2 dogs in our group. The property accommodated all of us comfortably. The lake was a short walk and a *little* treacherous with the babies, there was a tree that has fallen in the middle of the walkway right by the water so we had to be careful passing the babies over while we climbed under. The water was PERFECT and the beach was not too busy at any point. The house was well stocked with towels, spices and a working grill. We were worried it might be too hot without AC but the house actually stayed pretty cool throughout the day. All in all, a wonderful weekend vacation. Can’t recommend the place enough.

Great location overlooking a beautiful lake

We loved our stay at Camp Run a Muck and Caroline and Craig are great hosts! They went above and beyond with a lot of flexibility and having the house decorated for the 4th of July. Extremely responsive and friendly. The lake view from the house is actually better than pictured and it’s a quick walk down. If you can bring a boat that is best (couldn’t be closer to the boat launch) but still some nice swimming holes if you don’t have a boat, like us. Very peaceful home and neighborhood and we enjoyed the Hottub on the deck and looking up at the big trees. Kids liked feeding the birds and squirrels with the provided peanuts. Great stay and owners! Family Stay @ Camp Run-A-Muck

This was our first family vacation with our grandson. We had ages 6 months to 91(was accommodating to handicap-able). Everyone had a great time! We played in the lake, hiked, went to Nevada City for an outing, listened to live music at the dock (not sure if that was a one time deal or not) went in the hot tub, and just hung out. It was a lot fun and very relaxing. When we had questions, they were readily available and quick to help. The only thing we didn’t expect was having to remove our shoes before entering the house. Not a big deal but it would have been nice to know so some of us could prepare that didn’t want to wear what was provided. All in all, wonderful time! Recommend for any family of all ages!

Lake days

We were looking for a family trip that was close to the water and this totally fits the bill. There is a cove for swimming that is a short 5 minute hike down. The boat launch (closed mondays and tuesdays) is 1 block away. On mondays and tuesdays you can still put the boat in but you have to drive to the other side of the reservoir. The home had plenty of space for our 9 people. The master bedroom has a couch and a cozy chair which made caring for my newborn comfortable. We ate dinner on the deck each night and watched the hummingbirds after the feeder. The kids loved the outdoor space and playing too. We didn’t use them but the house has water guns and pool noodles as well as life jackets. The hosts were knowledgeable and made check in simple. We will come again before summer is over.

About the host

Hosted by Caroline and Craig

Host profile image
Caroline and Craig still reside in the San Francisco area and devote time to our stunning Nevada City home and our other vacation rentals throughout Northern California.

We've designed and set up this property to be a home away from home for our family and guests to experience all the luxury and details that we know everyone will enjoy.

We have been associated with the hotel and guest client industries and know how to please people. We have been fortunate to extensively travel the world for the last 30 years and have stayed in many upscale hotels and other traveler's accommodations. This has made us realize the little touches and creature comforts that we can provide to make your stay truly memorable.

Luxury, ambiance and discretion are paramount with us and is our guiding philosophy for this property. We will be continually posting more pictures of this stunning property to showcase all of its amenities.

Why they chose this property

Camp-Run-A-Muck fit every desire we had for a lakeside mountain getaway that we looked for years to find.

Combined with all of the local attractions, plus an easy drive from anywhere in Northern California, and located in the "heart of gold country", it was an easy choice for us.

Almost everything on the property has been updated and to some extent modernized to take full advantage of progress.

We know that you'll enjoy this mountain getaway almost as much as we do.

What makes this property unique

Crafted in the European style, this A-Frame style home boasts a stunning view, location and solitude, all set in a mature evergreen forest bordering the Tahoe Douglas National Forest in Nevada City, California towards the end of Gold Rush Highway 49.

Extensive woodwork with open beamed ceilings, most rooms come with intricate wooden detailed walls and hand crafted touches.

A mixture of unique and modern furnishings and appointments, we have chosen to reflect the historic ambiance of the locale to add to our guest's experience of the property.

Vaulted ceilings for the upper Master and rear bedrooms. Spectacular 180 degree panoramic views from the Master bedroom, provide a filtered view through mature towering evergreen trees of our own personal lake.

3 fireplaces provide cozy encompassing warmth should you desire. A well stocked woodshed can guarantee a romantic fire every evening.

Crisp evenings, warm days, fresh air and gentle breezes provide that mountain ambiance and feeling intune with the 'real world'.

On demand hot water means never running out. Wait till you experience our hot tub while looking up to a field of stars. No local streetlights means almost perfect stargazing. If the conditions are right, our semi-resident flock of bats may delight and entertain you.
