Villa Montemar - Mountain and Ocean Views + Infinity Pool
Welcome to Villa Montemar A Luxury Retreat in the Heart of Southern Costa Rica
Every room looks out to the Pacific. A heated infinity pool hangs over the jungle canopy. Toucans pass through at dusk, and ocean breezes cool the hillside year-round. Perched at 1,200 feet in the lush highlands of Platanillo, Villa Montemar is a brand-new two-story villa built in 2024 where the Pacific Ocean and the San Juan de Dios Mountains frame every view — deeply private, yet 25 minutes from the surf beaches of Dominical and close to everything Southern Costa Rica has to offer.
Fly into Quepos for a scenic 45-minute drive, or San José for a two-hour journey through the mountains.
The Villa
Villa Montemar was designed for guests who want luxury without pretense. The open first-floor plan centers on a custom chef's kitchen with propane gas cooking, a double-sided refrigerator, ice maker, espresso machine, and everything you need to cook or simply gather. The kitchen flows into a generous dining and living area — every room in the villa looks out to the Pacific — all oriented toward the ocean and the jungle canopy below. Step outside to the heated infinity pool, outdoor shower, covered dining terrace, and Napoleon charcoal grill — all framed by panoramic views across two levels of outdoor living space.
Accommodations
Two master suites with king beds, ensuite bathrooms, and private balcony access through sliding glass doors A third flex room: ideal as a private office or third bedroom with a king pullout sofa and its own full bath Full laundry room with washer, dryer, and sink
Comfort & Connectivity
Individually controlled AC in every room, plus ceiling fans indoors and out Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi throughout Solar-powered with generator backup and large-tank filtered well water — no interruptions during outages All towels, linens, and essentials provided
Outdoor Living

The surrounding ridge road, Fila Cacao, is quiet and beautiful for morning walks.
Location
Villa Montemar sits in a rare sweet spot: deeply private, yet close to everything that makes this corner of Costa Rica special. Beaches & Coast: 25 minutes to the surf beaches of Dominical, Playa Linda, and Uvita's iconic whale tail beach. Day trips to Manuel Antonio National Park are easy from here. Adventure: Book whale watching, deep-sea fishing, river rafting, ATV tours, or a guided horseback ride through the valley. Hike to the Nauyaca or Eco Chontales waterfalls — at Chontales, you can ride a horse to the base and order a traditional Costa Rican lunch beside the water. Nature: Fila Cacao's hiking trails begin steps from the villa, winding through valleys, farmland, and jungle. Ambitious guests can arrange a climb of Cerro Chirripó (3,821m), Costa Rica's highest peak, where clear days reveal both the Pacific and the Caribbean. Birdwatching: The immediate area is considered a biodiversity hotspot. Toucans, aracaris, parrots, hummingbirds, tanagers, and raptors are regular visitors. Mornings on the terrace feel like waking up inside a sanctuary. Wellness & Culture: A renowned yoga and spiritual retreat is a short walk down the road. Weekly markets in Tinamaste, Dominical, Uvita, and San Isidro offer organic produce, exotic fruits, local coffee, artisan goods, and some of the best people-watching in the region. Private massage by a local therapist can be arranged on the outdoor terrace.

About the host
Hosted by Job van Leusden
We are experienced hosts, managing our very own personal two short term rental properties in addition to residential property management. When you book with us, you will have the best communication and the best vacation time you deserve. Born and raised in the Netherlands, we reside part time in Costa Rica and part time in the United States.
Why they chose this property
After years of searching the Southern Zone for the right piece of land, this hillside in Platanillo was the clear answer. At 1,200 feet, the elevation creates a natural climate that is genuinely comfortable year-round — we rarely turn on the air conditioning, even in the hottest months. The constant ocean breeze does the work.
The neighborhood itself is quiet, safe, and well-maintained, with a good dirt road and the kind of community feel that is increasingly hard to find in popular tourist areas of Costa Rica. The local people here are among the best we have encountered anywhere in the country.
What sealed it was the views. Every room faces the Pacific, and the rear of the second floor opens to sweeping valley and mountain panoramas. We looked at a lot of properties over a lot of years — nothing else offered that combination at this elevation.
The proximity to Dominical, a wide variety of beaches, national parks, world-class waterfalls, and reliable private healthcare nearby made the decision easy. We did not just want to build a rental — we wanted to build something we would want to stay in ourselves. This neighborhood made that possible.
What makes this property unique
Villa Montemar was custom-built in 2024 with one thing in mind: making the most of where it sits. At 1,200 feet, the two-story open design with soaring ceilings on both floors captures constant ocean breezes and unobstructed Pacific and mountain views from every room.
The villa runs on solar power with generator backup, and draws from a legal private water concession — filtered to drinking quality, never-ending, and completely off the municipal grid. You will not find that combination at many properties in this region.
Inside, everything is brand new — custom chef's kitchen, heated infinity pool, and three ocean-view suites (two full master suites plus a private office that doubles as a third bedroom), all furnished with new interior and exterior pieces chosen specifically for the space.
The property is fully gated and walled, with an alarm system and exterior cameras, so guests can leave for the day and return to complete peace of mind. What sets Villa Montemar apart is the combination: the elevation, the views, the self-sufficient infrastructure, the condition, and the privacy — all in one of the most biodiverse and beautiful corners of Costa Rica.
