Contemporary rustic home nestled among boulders on 5 wooded acres

A recent comment from a tenant:
5/5 Serenity Now!
This was our second stay at this gorgeous home. It’s not hard to feel at home here! Beautifully appointed; ideally situated on a very private piece of property; and, most important, impeccably clean. Sherrie is gracious in every way. She’s easy to reach and very attentive. This is one of the best places we have rented. It’s our hope to return frequently!

Enjoy your morning coffee on the screened porch with a view of boulders and trees while watching the birds and deer.
This house is located 7 miles south of Chapel Hill on 5 acres of mature woods with boulders and a stream. It is a custom-designed home with all the fixtures, colors and details chosen by the artistic owner.

The steep gables make it look like a 'storybook' house from the outside, while on the the inside they form a high vaulted ceiling making a star shape above the loft. The olive green color makes the house blend in with nature and it looks like it has always been there.

The house is Cottage and Arts & Crafts slyle, but also includes Victorian and contemporary elements. Many windows and a large screened porch look out on a private wooded view with many boulders scattered about. The pillars of the front porch are trees that were cut from the land.

The main floor consists of an open kitchen/livingroom space with a gas log fireplace. The ceiling of the kitchen and entryway is paneled with oak boards from the trees cut from the site. There is a master bedroom with queen size bed and entrance into the shared bathroom. The other bedroom has a day bed with trundle and a desk. The floors are 5 inch Chestnut Oak boards.

Upstairs is a loft, bathroom and bedroom with queen size bed. In the loft is a built-in desk, 5G internet throughout the house. Cell service is weak but with WIFI calling turned on your devices will work fine.

This is a cozy home for those who desire to be away from the hustle and bustle of town. There is central air and heat and ceiling fans in every room. There is a 40' flat screen TV with satellite and a bluray disc player. There is a bluetooth speaker and a small boom box for playing CD's with radio.

There is a lovely stream which forms one border of the property just a few minutes walk from the house, either through the woods or on the road. It is a steep walk, but fine for anyone in shape. There is a flagstone patio with chairs to relax in, and a campfire area.

This home is in a 150 acre community of 23 homes, each on 5 acres, giving all privacy. The road into the community is gravel and winds up and down on the side of Boothe Hill. The 225 foot driveway is a climb up to the house.

This property is totally secluded and peaceful yet only minutes away from shopping and conveniences. Within 2-3 miles are 2 grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacy, liquor store, thrift shop, gas stations, car care and more. In 10 minutes you can be in either Pittsboro or Chapel Hill.

Our second stay at Rock Haven

Peaceful, charming, private, welcoming cottage surrounded by lovely woods. Central to needs such as groceries, etc but when in the cottage or screened porch or rock patio, it feels like being far away from the hustle and bustle!

Quiet and Beautiful

This lovely little home is nestled into the woods in Chapel Hill. A short drive from the UNC campus, our family enjoyed the quiet respite to relax in after full days of activities. The house is artsy quirky, and the only thing to consider is if you have toddlers or very young children (ours are a little older) there are many pieces of art and antique furniture in the home. Overall it was a great fit for our family.

Amazing retreat

My 13 year old daughter and I fell in love with this beautiful cottage in the woods. We loved the decor, the layout and the surroundings. Such a happy little place. Time spent on the porch and rock patio are going to be memories treasured. You will find everything you need in the cozy kitchen. We felt secluded and private, yet close to everything. We will be back. Thank you Sherrie!

Peaceful respite

My spouse and I were looking forward to this stay as a way to relax and visit with our children and young granddaughter after a very long time apart due to the pandemic. Sherrie's unique and peaceful home did not disappoint! Whether sitting on the screen porch or on the rock patio, we listened to the birds and watched fireflies dance. The kitchen was perfect! We slept very comfortably and enjoyed the art carefully displayed throughout her home. As far as it feels from the beaten path, grocery stores, restaurants and leisure activities in Chapel Hill are not far away. We hope to return!

Relaxing and Peaceful Cottage in the Woods

We had a wonderful stay. The house is even lovelier in person. The enormous windows help bring the outside in! It was so relaxing and peaceful. The house has all the amenities you need and is decorated with interesting artwork. I wish the weather was warmer so we could have enjoyed the stone patio and screened in porch. We took a nice walk down the road and the kids enjoyed the creek. The property is just minutes away from the grocery store and restaurants. We stayed here for a wedding taking place at the Fearrington Inn and it was very convenient. The only con for me (not for my husband) was driving on the steep and curvy gravel road. This place is a gem!

Great getaway!

Sherrie’s place is outstanding. Home was very clean and communication with host was easy. My wife and I stayed for a long weekend visiting our son in college with our three grown children and 14 year old. Beautiful scenery with quiet, natural surroundings. My wife is a cook and so we put the kitchen to good use. It was well stocked with everything we needed . We spent time out on the back landing playing cards and just enjoying the beautiful trees, squirrels and even a couple dear close by. All of the small details really make this a special place. From the artwork to the carefully thought out lighting this place has a great vibe and we hope to return soon.

About the host

Host profile image
My primary residence is on the Outer Banks of NC where I have lived for 27 years. I had a craft business doing 'Gyotaku,' or fish-printing and opened the gift shop 'Something Fishy' with my late husband.

Before that I lived in Chapel Hill and owned the Kalso Earth Shoe store, which later became the store,'Andromeda.' I moved to Chapel Hill in 1973 from New York to find warmer weather. My daughter and her family are there.

Why they chose this property

Thirty-three years ago when I was practicing real estate in Chapel Hill I developed this property which was listed by my real estate firm. I was living in a rustic cottage at the time and came upon this beautiful land, which I noticed had been recently surveyed, while walking in the woods. Determined to find the owner, when I went into my real estate company the next day, I found that we had just listed it!

Wanting to share this great discovery, I brought a few good friends out to walk the land and each one fell in love with it. Seven of us decided that we would buy it and sell it off in 5 acre pieces. We had Restrictive Covenants and Homeower Association Rules drawn up, but when the interest rates went up to 17% we got scared and didn't do it. I ended up finishing the surveying of the road and the lots, perking the lots and doing the rest of the development and the whole piece was sold in one year. Each of us bought a lot ourselves and that is how I come to have this lot today. Some of my oldest friends in Chapel Hill also live in the community.

I ended up moving away from Chapel Hill in 1986 after obtaining an MSW at UNC, to take a job in mental health on the Outer Banks. I never thought I would be able to live on this land, but now I have seen my way to build this second home close to family and friends. I am thoroughly enjoying the serenity of the woods and the special birds and wildlife I see there. I saw a box turtle laying eggs right next to the house, the last time I was there.

What makes this property unique

Being the originator of this community, I got first choice of my lot. I (and others) believe it is the best one, with the rolling woods down to the stream and 2 large rock outcroppings.
