The decor was charming (1st star), and the host polite in conversation (2nd star). But I couldn't get the front door to lock, and ultimately left because I didn't feel safe. I could unlock the front door digitally, but there was no deadbolt, and no button on the front of the keypad to lock the lock digitally again. When I manually turned the knob towards the door frame for the lever (from the inside) and I'd check it externally, it still remained unlocked. There was a key to the side door, but no light switch that I could find for the outside light, or it was burnt out. But still, I would try to lock it, go out the side door (in the dark), down the steps around to the front but, still it was unlocked! After an hour of trying, texting with the owner, no reply from their local person, and 50 mins on with VRBO and Expedia (who were polite and supportive). I then drove back home because by that point I was rattled and didn't feel safe. I booked this cottage as it was the one year anniversary of the passing of my long time life partner so I just wanted a quiet place to organize pictures. I'm sharing for other solo, senior, or female travelers for awareness so they can make the best choice for themselves and maybe consider a condo or like the Whale Cove Inn at a similar price point so there is someone to solve the issue immediately (and have a beach view).
