About this property

Historic Adobe - Organic King Bed - Walkable

Welcome to Watermelon Adobe, a lovingly restored 1890s home with a private backyard in the heart of Marfa. Walk to the town’s best coffee shops, galleries, restaurants and shops, then return to a peaceful retreat filled with historic character and modern comfort.

The spacious 1,600-square-foot adobe features soaring 12-foot ceilings, thick earthen walls, Spanish tile and polished concrete floors, an organic king-size mattress, whole-home water filtration and a new remote-controlled mini-split for year-round heating and cooling.

The Space

Designed for couples, solo travelers and remote work, the adobe feels calm, spacious and private. Large windows bring in soft morning light, dramatic sunsets and views of Marfa’s star-filled skies.

Handcrafted furniture, heirloom rugs and an eight-foot dining table made from Texas knotty pine create comfortable spaces for dining, reading, working or simply slowing down. High-speed Wi-Fi and dedicated work areas make longer stays easy.
There is no television by design, but a Sonos sound system lets you enjoy your own music throughout your stay.

Bedroom

Rest comfortably on an organic king-size mattress with organic bedding. Two soft cotton-gauze robes are provided for use during your stay.

Kitchen

The kitchen includes a vintage-inspired refrigerator and freezer, a restored 1940s O’Keefe & Merritt stove, cast-iron cookware and the essentials needed to prepare meals at home.

Bathroom

A sliding barn door made from repurposed wood opens to a thoughtfully renovated bathroom featuring a cast-iron tub and shower, hand-painted tile, ceramic sconces, an LED medicine cabinet and soft mood lighting.

Screened Porch and Backyard

The screened-in porch includes comfortable seating, backyard views and a potbelly stove with firewood. It is an ideal place to drink coffee at sunrise, enjoy sotol at sunset or stargaze after dark.

Guests have private access to the entire adobe and its expansive 7,000-square-foot yard. A full-size washer and dryer are also available.

Historic Character

The natural movement of the adobe walls tells the story of a home built more than a century ago. Inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, ceramicist Mary Rose has subtly highlighted some of the home’s natural cracks with veins of gold leaf, honoring its character, resilience and history.

Location

Watermelon Adobe is located in a quiet residential neighborhood within easy walking distance of central Marfa. You can leave the car behind for most restaurants, shops and galleries. The Marfa Lights Viewing Area and Prada Marfa require a drive.

Really wonderful stay at the Watermelon Adobe house. Beautifully decorated, with everything you need. Our favorite spot was the screened-in porch for morning coffee and evening hangouts. The central location made it easy to walk everywhere within town. Jesse checked in a few times before, during, and after our stay. Highly recommend!

Each room more beautiful than the last. I took too many showers because it was SO lovely in there (also bc ROBES). Great outdoor space. The most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. Jesse was so on top of things. A super special place.

My boyfriend and I loved our weekend stay here. The bed was SO COMFY and the place was very clean. It is much bigger on the inside than it looks from outside. It is really in the heart of Marfa, in the same neighborhood where many locals live. My family is from Marfa, down the street from here, and this home really does give you a taste of the style and aesthetic of typical homes in the area. There was art in every detail. The host was easy to contact at any time and answered all our questions before we even booked and before we even arrived at the location. We enjoyed the local coffee available in the kitchen and the quiet mornings in the screened room outdoors. I hope to stay here again!

About the host

Hi, we’re Jesse and Mary Rose — we got married in Marfa, had our rehearsal dinner at the Watermelon Adobe and fell in love with the desert, the community, and the creative spirit that fills the town. Restoring our historic adobe has been a dream come true, and we’re thrilled to share it with guests who appreciate beauty, history, and the slower pace of desert life.

Why they chose this property

Blending the best of Marfa’s landscape with the ease of its walkable in-town charm. This restored 1890s adobe stays naturally cool, warm, and quiet, with polished concrete floors perfect for barefoot mornings. Earthen walls and modern desert design, creates a sense of space and calm. Large windows draw the soft morning light, dramatic sunsets, and star-filled nights.

What makes this property unique

Designed with relaxation in mind, the space features Heirloom rugs, handcrafted furniture, and an 8-foot dining table made from Texas knotty pine-a welcoming spot for eating, reading, daydreaming or Zoom meetings. High speed WiFi keeps you connected when you need it.

A sliding barn door made from repurposed wood leads to the bathroom, which features an LED medicine cabinet, hand-painted tile, ceramic sconces, mood lighting, and a cast-iron tub/shower combo.

The natural shifting of the Watermelon Adobe over time, tells a story chronicling its past. Inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where cracks in pottery are filled with gold to accentuate imperfection, ceramicist Mary Rose has subtley placed veins of gold leaf throughout the interior walls, embracing it’s character, resilience, and history.

Step into the screened-in porch, where a cozy potbelly stove, plenty of firewood, comfortable seating, and backyard views set the tone for true relaxation. It’s the perfect spot to stargaze, sip matcha at sunrise, or sotol at sunset. There’s no television—by design—but a Sonos music system lets you fill the space with your favorite tunes. The utility room includes a full-size washer and dryer that guests are welcome to use.

Simple, soulful, and built for downtime, the Watermelon Adobe has seen some beautiful things over the years and we kindly ask that you show it the sweetness, love and respect it deserves.

Please be mindful of goat heads (tiny desert thorns) that like to hitch a ride on the bottoms of shoes. They can be painful if carried inside and stepped on barefoot in the middle of the night.

Floor mats are provided at the front door and at the entrance to the screened-in porch—a quick wipe of your feet helps keep the adobe comfortable for everyone. Also, to keep the space breezy and bug-free, please pull the screen doors shut behind you to help keep mosquitoes and flies out.
