Charming 2-bed private suite at The House on the Hill in marvelous Cave Spring
Welcome to The House on the Hill, a peaceful retreat nestled on a scenic hillside just minutes from Roanoke. This private lower-level guest suite has been thoughtfully designed to offer comfort, convenience, and a calm place to recharge or get things done. Whether you’re visiting for work or leisure, the goal is to make your stay smooth, relaxing, and welcoming. Guests are asked to treat the space with the same care and consideration they would their own home. Check-in is available at 4 p.m. or later, with checkout by 11 a.m. The guest suite is accessed via the exterior basement steps and offers a private entrance and dedicated space. While the host lives upstairs on the main floor and you may occasionally hear everyday household sounds, your suite is entirely your own. Parking is available for up to two vehicles near the guest entrance, though space can be a bit tight. Guests are welcome to turn around at the top of the hill to make coming and going easier. The home is located on Colonial Avenue, which can be busy at times, so extra care is recommended when entering or exiting the driveway, especially during peak hours. Visibility is maintained by regularly trimming the bank in front of the house, but guests who prefer a less stressful exit may find it easier to turn right and loop around using a nearby street or traffic light. Inside, the suite includes two bedrooms—a larger bedroom with a queen-size bed and two spacious closets, and a smaller bedroom with a full-size bed—along with a full bathroom. Guests have access to a laundry area, a small kitchen setup with a mini fridge, microwave, and coffeemaker, and a dining area intended for enjoying meals. Dedicated workspaces with desks make the suite well-suited for remote work or study, and a small library offers a wide selection of books to enjoy during your stay. Outdoors, guests are welcome to relax in the backyard seating area, perfect for morning coffee or winding down in the evening. For a quieter escape, the upper backyard offers a peaceful, wooded setting ideal for reflection and connecting with nature. Wildlife sightings are common, including rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, deer, and a variety of birds, which can be enjoyed from a respectful distance. Guests are asked to be mindful of neighboring homes, especially during early mornings and evenings, to help maintain a calm environment. During the summer months, an outdoor griddle is available for guests who wish to cook outside, with instructions provided and cleaning appreciated after use.

Great place to stay! I was in town for a short weekend, and this was the perfect spot...easy, clean, comfortable, and private. It was a great place to relax and enjoy my stay.
The bottom half of the house was spacious, comfortable, and located near restaurants and places of interest. The host shared that the driveway was very steep and to proceed with caution. I would suggest that a box of tissues should be placed in each bedroom and in the living room.I would stay at this house again. It is comfortable for two people.
Host was very responsive, the space was large, clean and private. The driveway is extremely steep which is an issue if you have a very low vehicle like me. Great experience overall.
We loved our stay here. We were traveling to Maryland and stopped here for an overnight. Communication with the host was easy and we certainly had plenty of space to spread out. Really, the only downside is that it's maybe 15-20 minutes off the highway, so a little bit out of the way, but we felt safe in the neighborhood and there is a designated parking spot for visitors. The bed was comfortable, you can use the washer and dryer if you need, there is a mini fridge for holding things overnight, and there were even extra blankets and pillows. I will add that the steps to the basement were a little steep and there is no handrail. This could be a problem for some, but it wasn't for us. Thanks for hosting us!
My parents and I traveled into town for two family funerals, and were so grateful for a place to stay on short notice! Aila was communicative, kind, and responsive. The lower level unit was private, clean, and spacious, and I enjoyed the contemporary decor. The living area was spacious and included a large, comfy sofa in front of a TV with a wood stove to the side and a small table with stools where 2 could comfortably eat. I found the beds in both bedrooms to be quite comfortable, and it was quiet & dark during the night hours. I slept well! The entrance is definitely quite steep (first step is a doozy), but my parents were able to navigate ok. This would be a concern for anyone with limited mobility. My father was worried that a basement unit would be musty, but the air smelled fresh and the furniture felt new! Both bedrooms had shelving/open closet areas. Bring your own hangers if you need to hang formal attire. Our only trouble was the bathroom - the previous tenant had apparently busted the shower door off the hinges. Aila let us know as soon as she knew, and had it fixed a few hours after our arrival. The shower was also out of shampoo and body wash, and had some staining around the base. Aila was apologetic, made a repair promptly, and graciously offered us a later check-out free of charge for the trouble.
