My Story: Roots in the Forest

The story of Troll Hill began long before it became a retreat; it started with my parents’ journey from Norway. When they immigrated, they brought with them a deep-seated Nordic connection to the land and a vision for a life surrounded by nature. They chose this unique pocket of the Carolinian forest to build our family home, hand-crafting the foundation of what this property is today.

Growing up here was a gift. These woods were my playground, my classroom, and my sanctuary. I spent my childhood exploring the trails and learning firsthand the quiet rhythm of the seasons. Living on this land shaped my perspective on wellness and the importance of preserving wild, peaceful spaces.

Today, my husband Mike and I are honored to be the stewards of this legacy. As educators, we have a natural passion for sharing what we love with others. We decided to open Troll Hill to guests because we believe the magic of this property—the towering trees, the fresh air, and the Nordic spirit my parents instilled here—is meant to be experienced.

We invite you to step into our story, find your own connection to the forest, and enjoy the sanctuary we are so proud to call home.

What makes this property unique

What makes Troll Hill truly unique is the seamless blend of authentic Nordic tradition and the rare biodiversity of the Carolinian forest. It isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a curated sensory experience rooted in heritage and nature.

Here is what sets us apart:

A Living Heritage
Most retreats are built as businesses, but Troll Hill was built as a home. Hand-crafted by Norwegian immigrants, the property carries an authentic Scandinavian soul. Every trail and structure is part of a lifelong story of stewardship, giving the land a warmth and character you won't find in modern, cookie-cutter accommodations.

The Nordic Thermal Cycle
We bring the traditional "Sauna Culture" of the North to the heart of Ontario. Our focus on the Thermal Cycle—the intentional transition between the heat of the sauna, the bracing clarity of a cold plunge, and a period of deep rest—offers a transformative wellness ritual that revitalizes both body and mind.

Rare Carolinian Sanctuary
Troll Hill is nestled within a rare Carolinian forest ecosystem, home to a diversity of plant and animal life found nowhere else in Canada. The towering trees and lush landscape provide a natural canopy of privacy and a "soundtrack" of wind and birdsong that allows for true unplugged immersion.

The Educator’s Touch
As lifelong teachers, we don't just provide a space; we share a perspective. We’ve designed the property to foster curiosity and connection. Whether it's the way the light hits a specific grove or the intentional layout of our wellness amenities, every detail is meant to help you learn the art of slowing down.

At Troll Hill, you aren't just visiting the woods—you are experiencing a legacy of wellness and a deep, ancestral respect for the wild.
