About the host
Hosted by Laura K. Benton
Mountain Adventure Retreats was founded on a deep-rooted passion for the San Juan Mountains and a shared commitment to excellence in hospitality and property care. The venture began in 2013, sparked by Laura’s long-standing love for Ouray County. A lifelong Coloradan who first discovered the Ridgway and Ouray area in 2001, Laura brought with her an extensive background in business, marketing, and travel management. Her years of experience in the ski and property management industries across North America’s premier destinations provided the foundation for a company built on community and exceptional service.
In 2020, the team expanded when Steve moved from Dallas to join Laura in Ouray County. Steve’s arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company, bringing forty-three years of high-level construction management experience to the team. Having served as Vice President for some of the nation’s top General Contractors, he integrated professional expertise in budgeting, procurement, and project oversight into the company’s property maintenance and caretaking operations. His own connection to the state dates back to 1993, when participating in Ride the Rockies ignited a lifelong passion for Colorado’s dramatic landscapes.
Today, Laura and Steve work side-by-side to lead a dedicated team of professionals focused on delivering top-tier property care. When they aren't overseeing the finer details of a guest's stay or maintaining local residences, they are often found embracing the outdoors together. Whether they are cycling, skiing, hiking, or fishing, they remain inspired by the ever-changing seasons and the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.
Why they chose this property
Selecting this neighborhood was a deliberate choice to place guests at the historic and cultural epicenter of the "Switzerland of America." This area is anchored by landmark architecture like the Citizen’s State Bank building, allowing us to offer a stay that feels deeply connected to the 19th-century mining heritage of the San Juan Mountains. The primary luxury of this location is its unmatched walkability; once you arrive, the car becomes unnecessary. You are perfectly positioned just steps from the curated boutiques and high-end dining of Main Street, as well as the world-renowned Wright Opera House.
For those seeking the natural wonders of Ouray, the neighborhood serves as a premier gateway to the outdoors. You are within a few blocks of the iconic Perimeter Trail and the breathtaking Box Canyon Park, while the world-famous sulfur-free mineral pools at the Ouray Hot Springs are just a short stroll away. During the winter months, the proximity to the Ouray Ice Park makes this the ideal home base for climbers and spectators alike. By centering our portfolio here, we ensure that every guest experiences the best of Ouray’s culture, history, and recreation from a sophisticated, central vantage point.
What makes this property unique
What makes this property unique is the architectural harmony between its storied past as a historic financial institution and its current life as a premier mountain retreat. Situated within the original Citizen’s State Bank building, the unit features soaring ceilings and original transom windows that are rarely found in modern builds. The centerpiece of the home is a massive overhead skylight that acts as a natural sun-cannon, dowsing the open living area in the brilliant, high-altitude light of the San Juans. This vertical volume creates an airy, expansive atmosphere that elevates the guest experience beyond a standard rental.
Beyond the architecture, the property stands out through its sophisticated mountain decor and professional-grade staging. Every element is designed to reflect a refined, high-end aesthetic while maintaining total functionality, utilizing organic textures and a neutral palette that allows the surrounding peaks to remain the star of the show. The rare combination of a central downtown location, a historic bank setting, and a spacious two-bedroom layout makes it a sophisticated home base that is uniquely equipped to handle family needs while maintaining a polished, boutique hospitality feel.
