About this property

Vintage Pool Hall Store House – More Than a Stay, It’s an Experience

Step back in time with a stay at the Vintage Pool Hall Store House, located in the historic Cox Store in the Hasty Community of Scotland County, North Carolina.

Nestled in a neighborhood affectionately known as Coxville, this unique property celebrates the legacy of Cox Store, established by Alfred and Lolar Cox in the 1950s. For decades, Cox Store served as a beloved local convenience store, gas station, pool hall, arcade room, and juke joint before being converted into a home in the early 1990s.

Today, the space honors that rich history with a pool table, Pac-Man arcade machine, vintage relics, and nostalgic replicas from days gone by.

This is more than a place to stay — it’s an experience.

About the host

Hosted by Kenneth Bowen

Host profile image
Hello and welcome! My name is Dr. Kenneth Bowen, and I’m proud to call Scotland County, North Carolina home. I am a Professor and Program Coordinator at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and I have spent much of my career working in education, leadership, and serving communities.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family, working outdoors, landscaping, restoring and preserving pieces of history, and supporting my community.

As both a host and frequent traveler myself, I understand how important it is to create a space that feels welcoming, comfortable, and memorable. I enjoy hosting because it gives me the opportunity to meet people from different places and share unique experiences and local history.

The Vintage Pool Hall Store House is especially meaningful because it preserves a piece of our community’s past. I enjoy bringing history back to life and creating spaces that are more than just places to stay—they tell a story. My goal is for every guest to feel at home and leave with memories they will not forget.

Why they chose this property

I chose this area because of its deep roots, history, and strong sense of community. Located in the Hasty Community of Scotland County, this neighborhood—affectionately known as Coxville—is especially meaningful to me because it is my home community where I grew up and where my parents still live today. This is a place filled with memories, relationships, and a history that has shaped who I am.

For generations, this community was a place where neighbors gathered, friendships were built, and community life centered around places like the historic Cox Store. There was a true sense of connection here that many communities no longer have.

What I enjoy most is the peaceful rural setting and slower pace of life. It offers a chance to step away from the rush of everyday life and enjoy a more relaxed environment. There’s something special about sitting outside, taking in the quiet surroundings, and appreciating a place where history and community still matter.

The area also carries a great deal of nostalgia and character. Staying here gives guests an opportunity not only to visit Scotland County, but to experience a small piece of local history and community that has meant so much to me throughout my life.

What makes this property unique

What makes the Vintage Pool Hall Store House unique is that it is much more than a place to stay—it is a place with a story. This property is the former historic Cox Store, a gathering place established by Alfred and Lolar Cox in the 1950s that once served as a convenience store, gas station, pool hall, arcade room, and juke joint for the community.

Rather than simply creating another rental property, I wanted to preserve and celebrate its history. The home now blends comfortable accommodations with nostalgic experiences and vintage touches that honor its past. Guests can enjoy a pool table, Pac-Man arcade machine, and unique décor featuring relics and replicas that reflect the building’s earlier days.

The property also offers a spacious layout with four bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, dining room, office space, patio, and sheltered parking, making it ideal for families, groups, and travelers seeking something different.
What truly sets it apart is the experience itself. Guests are not just booking a home—they are stepping into a piece of local history and becoming part of the story of a place that meant so much to generations of community members.
