About this property
Now with optional car add-on
Car is a 2022 Tucson compact SUV, Special rate of $30 a day for cottage guests. After you book the cottage, Jordan's email will be shown and you can contact him for the details. You'll pick up the car in the parking across from baggage claim. No lines or paperwork there.
No cleaning fees. VRBO will add their fees and the required taxes. Totally private so no face-to-face contact needed. Contactless entry.
Coded gate. No passing others in hallways, lobbies and elevators. Enjoy peace, quiet & privacy and a big deck and yard.
Escape the traffic and the touristy areas yet be right on the ocean watching sunrises and moon rises over the ocean, surfers, whales, windsurfers and kite surfers. Our location is central to all the places you will want to go and we are at your service to share our knowledge and love of Maui.
The Space
Our cottage was built in 2012 and we welcomed our first guests in 2013. It has all appliances , comfy Serta bed, all-cotton bedding, pillows, towels, etc. Sliding mirrored doors separate the bedroom from main room. The cottage sits across from the beach below our upscale neighborhood and your only neighbor is a doctor on one side and us up the hill behind in the home we bought in 1999. 420 friendly.
Air-conditioning, washer and dryer, Netflix and YouTubeTV! And we have an AED in the main house, a Christmas gift from our son!
Cottage is stocked with coffee, tea and condiments, fruits and bagels or pastries and butter in the freezer to get you started on breakfast. Snorkel gear, beach chairs, coolers, etc. in a storage bin on your deck and we can give you tips on good things to do and things to avoid.
Separate bedroom and bathroom has 2 doors so there is privacy if one person wants to sleep and the other stay up or get up. Plenty of room for two or for a family with a child who can sleep in a crib (available to rent from No Ka Oi Baby Rentals) or on the couch.
The area we are in is called 'Central Maui' because you can easily drive to everywhere else. Yet our particular location feels more like country with open beach and ocean in front and to the north. Be aware that there is no commercial business within walking distance but the beach and a golf course are there for pleasure walking!
Guest Access
Anywhere on the property. It is yours for the duration of your stay. My husband and son surf and with permission, cut through the yard to access the surf across the street.
Interaction with Guests
At the discretion of our guests. Some have become best friends; some we've never met.
The Neighborhood
Our neighborhood is upscale, our neighbors really friendly owners. The beach is right across the road in front of the cottage and when the surf is big, it's great to watch the surfers there. When there's no surf, the beach is empty. We love it both ways! It's not a swimming beach but those are a short drive away and by staying here, one avoids the touristy, hot, dusty surroundings of the beach cities
Getting around
We have a bus system and Jordan and I can drop guests off on our way places but a car really is recommended as only tour buses go up into the valleys and up to the top of Haleakala.
Other Things to Note
We stayed in a B & B years ago in Switzerland and the women treated us like family and it had such a positive impact on us that we try to do the same and make our guests feel at home. On the other hand, you may want to just do your own thing and that's perfectly fine, too.

About the host

Jordan was born and raised in Lahaina and comes from a well-known and highly respected family. His grandparents immigrated here from Japan. He went to University of Hawaii for 3 and a half years and has traveled extensively in the South Pacific. He and his wife also traveled England, Sweden and Europe and a half-dozen US states. He was owner of a highly successful fish wholesale business and knows just about everything there is to know about the ocean and the things that live there and the things you can do in and on it. He’s a happy-go-lucky guy who is game to do just about anything on a moment’s notice.
Gail was born and raised in Michigan. After graduating from the University of Michigan, she fulfilled a childhood dream by moving to Hawaii. She is the founder of H.A.P.P.Y., a social and networking group for homeschoolers. As such, she planned social events, offered crafts and field trips., She still counsels families interested in homeschooling and is the author of "Homeschooling: Why and How" and "Real L.I.F.E. Parenting." She is a writer, speaker, and artist.
Both Jordan and Gail are veteran Red Cross volunteers and should anything happen on Maui, you will be in good hands.
We have been married since 1979 and have a grown son who, in case you need a cinematographer, is the highest rated videographer/editor in Hawaii, having All-Five-Star reviews.

Why they chose this property
Before we bought the main house 15 years ago, I asked my family where they most wanted to live and we all said this subdivision. It's like country but not so wet as Haiku, which can be moldy, nor so hot and dusty and crowded as Kihei and Lahaina, and not so far and cold as Makawao and Kula. We love the feel of being private and quiet and yet so close to everything commercial, the parks, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, the hospital, the YMCA, the malls, good restaurants and our favorite: Iao Valley where we go for short or long hikes and swims in the cool clean river pools. We didn't want to downsize so we built the cottage in 2013 so we'd have a bit of income so we could continue living in this heavenly spot.
What makes this property unique
Fresh air, beach ambiance, not touristy, views of sunrises and moon rises and whales playing (December through March) and surfers, stand up paddlers, and an endless source of driftwood.
