About this property

Mid-Century Retreat - 1959 Architectural Gem, Vintage Decor, Records, 4+ Acres

This is a sprawling 2500 square foot Mid-Century home custom-built in 1959 located on 4+ private and fenced acres with electric security gate.

Relax with your friends and family in a spacious 2 bedroom 2 bathroom home decorated in an eclectic mix of antique, vintage, rustic, and modern - it's a time warp with modern comforts.

Every room is over-sized - 2 large bedrooms with plenty of privacy between them, dressing room sized closets, new Cal King beds and 2 full bathrooms - both with original tile. Master bath has very interesting sunken roman shower/tub while the guest bath has a separated shower and comfortable bathtub for soaking.

The kitchen is fully stocked and features a new oven and refrigerator with ice maker as well as a coffee maker, blender, mixer, air popcorn popper, crock pot, and pots, pans, utensils, and staples such as spices, sugar, flour, condiments, etc. If you have a special food preparation requirement then just ask - the equipment is probably on site. For example, there is an Omega Vert350HD juicer which does a great job on both fruits and vegetables. Enjoy your meals around a maple table with seating for up to 10 in front of a wood-burning fireplace. There is also a gas barbeque outside on the patio and and a picnic table for al fresco dining!

Living room has a large wood-burning fireplace, 11 foot long couch, lounging cushions, and a wall of windows that look out to beautiful views of mountains. There is a queen memory foam bed in the living room just off the den which is perfect for reading or extra guests.

The den has 2 comfy twin size day beds, flat screen television wired to Netflix, Apple TV, record player, CD/DVD player, and an interesting collection of books, CDs/DVDs and hundreds of records for use during your stay. There are 3 vintage stereos in the house - each with record player and AirPort Express AirPlay device for wireless or hardwire connection to your IPhone, IPad, or MAC.

A washer and dryer, iron, ironing board, and clothes steamer are located in the house for your use.

Enjoy wandering the gated grounds, warm yourself in front of the fire pit, soak in the 6 person hot tub, or relax in the hammocks on the patio. Write your great novel on the vintage typewriter or catch up on the TV shows and movies you never have time to watch.

A dart board and horseshoes are provided for drinking sports aficionados. Cards and chips and various board games are also provided - had a good game of Life, Monopoly, Chess, or Scrabble lately? Come on out and slow down!

We also have a Guest House on the property available to rent separately. Please see our separate listing Joshua Tree Modern Guest House for details. The Guest House has a living room area with fireplace, queen bedroom nook, 1 or optionally 2 twin beds, newly remodeled bathroom, full kitchen and wood-burning fireplace and a hot tub.

We are just a few blocks away from the art galleries, restaurants, and bar in downtown Joshua Tree and about 10 minutes away by car from the west entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.

The property is in close proximity to the Joshua Tree National Park and the village of Joshua Tree. The village of Joshua Tree offers a variety of great restaurant options and art galleries. Pappy & Harriets in Pioneertown is just a 15 minute drive and is not to be missed for great music and food and drink.

We love to share our experiences in the Joshua Tree area with our guests but are very respectful of your privacy. As such, the amount interaction with our guests is entirely at our guests' discretion.

We hope you can come stay at our property soon!

A Desert Stay Sweeter Than Dessert
This home is magical. The setting alone is truly stunning in its natural beauty, but the home itself is also gorgeous. Just about everything has been thought of with this property. There are so many nice touches throughout. We spent as much time as the thermometer would allow outside in the incredible outdoor spaces on the property, and we also thoroughly enjoyed the record collection and sound system. This home was exactly what we needed for a restorative few days away. I would absolutely recommend this home and would return in a heartbeat.

Wonderfully eclectic desert retreat
We had a relaxing long weekend getaway. The location is great; close enough to be in the middle of town in under 5 minutes, yet just far enough away to find a little seclusion. The home itself has an interesting slight split-level layout to conform to the topography of the lot which adds to the character of the property. There’s so many interesting things within the house that you could spend hours just exploring all of the different decorations, books, records, etc. I would absolutely recommend staying here.

What an amazing house! So relaxing!
By far the coolest house we have stayed in so far from VRBO. We are really into mid-century modern houses/items and this house did not disappoint! Mark and Laura were really responsive when we had questions and I would highly recommend staying here! Centrally located and super close to the West Park Visitor center. House was super clean and it is like you never left home....they have everything and anything you might need to cook! A must is to lay on the hammocks outside and view the stars--so quiet and peaceful! We for sure will be returning!

Great house, excellent location
Mark was a wonderful host! He brought my husband a husband a guitar to play and also sent me some clothes that I accidentally left in a closet! :) The house is spacious and great for hanging out. We loved sitting out on the patio and watching the sun and shifting light. A roadrunner often crossed by, right in front of our chairs. It's very close to Joshua Tree and we went hiking every day. We took two guided hikes, which was a great way into some really beautiful and untravelled areas. Loved Natural Sisters restaurant. Joshua Tree is a unique national treasure.

Just fab!
Well-appointed doesn't come close. This spot is magical and has everything you need - and way more. We lounged, read, listened to music, cooked...and all in a fantastic setting. Everything was chic but comfortable; in good taste but approachable. Tons of LPs for you crate diggers. I would characterize this spot as being incredibly sincere, if that makes sense. All your creature comforts that you want, plus more that you didn't know you wanted. Can't wait to come back!

We recently relocated permanently to Joshua Tree from the Silverlake area of Los Angeles. They operate several vacation rentals in Joshua Tree. Laura teaches yoga and owned a yoga studio - Glendale Yoga in Glendale, CA - which is now closed but operates virtually from Joshua Tree. We both grew up in Cincinnati, OH but have lived in California for 30 years. We love everything that California has to offer but are particularly enamored with the beautiful scenery and interesting community of Joshua Tree.

Why they chose this property

We purchased this property because we both appreciate architecture and vintage furniture and décor. This house was quite a showplace in its day - Donovan used to stop by for coffee - and we have enjoyed restoring it to its original glory and filling it with period furnishing and decoration and wonderful art. There are 8' deep eaves around the entire house which keep it cooler and provide choices of shady seating areas for different times of the day. This house is a relaxing and comfortable trip back in time.

What makes this property unique

There are beautiful views through walls of glass in the kitchen and living room. The large open kitchen with room for a table with seating for 10 in front of a fireplace is perfect for large get togethers. All of the rooms are oversized - the sunken living room is nearly 900 sq. ft. alone - and there are multiple indoor and outdoor gathering spots so the house never really feels crowded. We love to relax on the patio off of the kitchen and master bedroom while listening to one of the thousands of records in the record collection and watching the stars in the beautiful desert sky!
