Amish Built Home in West Kootenai, MT - Near Lake Koocanusa, Rexford & Eureka
A Place to Stay is simply that! A welcome respite after a long day of travel. By the time you get to the West Kootenai you will appreciate the fact that there is A Place to Stay. It's not a gorgeous, romantic hideaway or bungalow by the beach. There are no fine tapestries or linens. A Place to Stay is a simple yet comfortable place to take a load off and nestle in for a day or two while you explore the vast, beautiful wilderness of Montana.
A Place to Stay was purchased by the Dessaint Kimura Family in November 2011 from Pastor Andy Yoder. The home is often referred to by the community as 'The Bishop's Place'. A Place to Stay is a get away from it all; unplug, unwind and reconnect with our children and ourselves kind of place! In many big cities that just doesn't always seem possible. In the West Kootenai it definitely is!
A Place to Stay was originally Amish Built by a growing Amish community in the late 90's. With 6 bedrooms and over 4000 Square Feet our intent was to stay true to the original house while modernizing it just a bit. It is unique in that there is very little electricity, no flat screen tv and no central heat or air. We finally got a microwave in 2020! There are no light switches by the doors. You will see and experience some of the little things that are obviously Amish as you explore the home and surrounding areas.
We are nestled between the Montana Woodworks, the Amish School House and the Kootenai Kraft & Grocery with restaurant. You are remote and at the same time in the thick of town life. One of my favorite things to see as I sit at my desk is a cowboy riding a horse while talking on his cell phone.
Our guests are welcome to cook at home or go next door to the restaurant to grab coffee and a meal. The store has many of the supplies you need for daily life and they serve a good meal.
Visiting A Place to Stay takes some strategic planning and preparation. Because we are so remote, guests will want to stop at Stein's Market in Eureka, Rosauers in Libby, or visit the Kootenai Kraft & Grocery right next door. Our guests will have full kitchen access to cook their own meals. Condiments are in the pantry! Stein's Market is a 40-minute drive, and The Kootenai Store is a 1-minute walk :) The Kootenai Store also has a restaurant and a hot pot of coffee! They are truly the 'Breakfast' to our 'Bed'. They are closed on Sundays, so stock up early!
Our Rooms are very unique in their simplicity. Each room is appointed in blues and greens to reflect the sky and the forest that surrounds you.
Using A Place to Stay as a home base, you will find fishing, hunting, boating, biking, hiking, Glacier National Park, Eureka, Whitefish, The Yaak and Canada all within two hours of our retreat.
A Place to Stay is perfect for Group Retreats or Family Reunions. There are 6 bedrooms with a large shared family room and kitchen. The home is over 4000 Square feet so there is plenty of room to spread out and relax. There is one bathroom on each floor, each with a shower. Our home is often rented by the Amish community. Our 'Season' is typically May through October, weather permitting. Check-In at 4:00 p.m. and Check Out at 12:00 Noon. There is no central heat or cooling but we do have fans for warm summer days. There is minimal electricity - only 1 socket per bedroom, a bathroom socket, and a power strip to charge your electronics. Plug in the Christmas lights as a night light. Solar touch lamps on the stairs and throughout. There is some overflow living/sleeping space in the workshop by the big weeping willow tree. No running water in that outbuilding.
*** Bookings are not processed immediately and may take 24-48 hours to verify as I call into the Amish and wait for a callback ***
I can see Canada from my bedroom window!

This property was great and gave us the space to be together for the family trip we were looking for. This was our second time there and we will be back.

Great get away! The Amish furniture auction is a must (early June) or a visit to their shop (just up the road from the property).
Beach access is great; the water was a bit cool, but some brave souls did go for a quick dip!
Beds and linens were all clean and comfortable.
The kitchen has everything you need.
Lots of books to read while you relax.

About the host
Hosted by Janelle Dessaint Kimura
We bought the home as a retreat for our family away from the big city. Having spent several years in Tokyo and then Phoenix we wanted a special place to kind of unplug and unwind from the attractions of modern life. With very little electricity it is so fun to see kids learn how to find something to do and go explore their world.
Why they chose this property
Big enough for a large family or group. Privacy and community at the same time.
What makes this property unique
A Place to Stay is interesting in that it was originally Amish built. Next door is the one-room Amish school house where children are delivered by horse and cart and the Sunday morning hymns in German are just fantastic to hear.
