This was a wonderful place to stay in DC. It was perfect for our family. Its location is stellar, having easy access to the National Mall and all it has to offer. The hosts were kind and responsive to our needs. The property was clean, exactly as advertised, and in a wonderful, quiet neighborhood. If given the chance, we would absolutely stay here again.

We'd love to host you again. Our family has lived on the block for 110 years. We love the Hill and we want our guests to feel like locals.
Thanks for being such great guests.
This Capitol hill charmer, in a great family neighborhood is in the perfect location. Close to the Smithsonian museums, and the mall if you don’t mind walking. We basically parked our car for three days and walked everywhere. FYI there are three fairly steep triangular stairs down to get inside this basement rental. Thoughtfully furnished with everything you need, from a stocked kitchen to a comfy queen bed with quality linens. Highly recommend this rental. Thank you for sharing your home with us.

The stay was good. The location is amazing. The only issue we had was the destroyed wood floor. We had to put mats down so we wouldn't get splinters in our feet.

Joseph,
Thank you for staying with us and for being patient about the floor. We have since replaced it. The house is 166 years old now. (It was built by Samuel Walker, who also built many of the city's important buildings including overseeing parts of the US Capitol. You may have noticed that the decorative cornerstone sandstones in the building are identical to those int he Capitol. We feel feel sure they we leftovers. :)
My family of five (2 adults and 3 kids under 12) enjoyed our stay here. The location was excellent to be able to walk or take the metro. The apartment was clean and had what we needed, but please be aware that this is an apartment in an old home. There are some things that are worn out or quirky, but we felt safe and the space was clean, quiet, and family friendly. The host responded to questions/requests, and the free parking was right there by the apartment entrance.

Hi Anna,
We're so glad you enjoyed your stay. You are right about the house. It is 166 years old. Major Samuel Walker built the house for his family of 13 children, built some of the important public buildings in Washington, including an addition to the US Capitol. We think this explains why the decorative cornerstones and sandstone panels are identical to those in the Capitol. :) The apartment was built new in 2003. (Originally it was the kitchen-- with dumbwaiter-- and the laundry). The carriage house was built for horses and carriages. We turned it into an apartment in 2014. There are plenty of quirks including the mounting block in front of the house, the stained glass transoms, the Victorian porches and the original iron fence. It's an historic house and anything that needs to be replaced must be an exact duplicate.
If you noticed anything that seemed worn out in the apartment, please let us know.
My wife and our 21 year old son stayed here for its close proximity to all the DC must see places, it didn’t let us down. The location is outstanding as it lies within a 15 min walk to the metro and a 12 minute walk to the nations capital. The historic house is located within a very nice and safe neighborhood and the owners were very friendly and accommodating. Off street parking is available so we parked our car and didn’t use it our entire visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend.

About the host
Hosted by Katy Kelly
The Kelly family is the second family to live in the main house, which was built in 1876 by Maj. Samuel Walker for his family.
Why they chose this property
One of the premier properties on Capitol Hill, the carriage house, the stable and the east side of this Victorian house were completed in 1876. By 1886, Maj. Samuel Walker had more money and ten children so he added the west side of the house, the third floor and the porches in the style of Charles Eastlake, the English architect who simplified Victorian architecture and flattened its rounded gingerbread. All of the first floor ceilings—except the hall—are tin and so is a bedroom ceiling on the second floor.
What makes this property unique
One of the great pleasures of the house is that it remains much as it was when first built. Modernizing was done slowly, with care and caution. On the chance that electricity was just a fad, Major Walker only electrified every other arm of the chandeliers in the living room and the study and left the others as gas lights. The gaslights still work--and so does the electricity.
