About this property

Beautiful Riverfront Home w/ Kayaks & Firewood! Two Dogs Ok! 🏡 🐾 🛶

Welcome to Camp Shoop!

‘Camp Shoop’ is a lovely riverfront home where you will enjoy an abundant taste of the outdoors with all of the indoor comforts of home.

Our home features knotty pine walls, custom cabinetry, custom furniture and granite countertops throughout. The open floor plan in the front of the house stylishly combines the kitchen, dining and family room with a vaulted ceiling and skylights. The adjoining sunroom off the kitchen/dining area offers a delightful river view!

The kitchen is well equipped featuring custom cabinets, a generous work island, a spacious dining table and up-to-date black stainless steel appliances. You'll find an abundance of dinnerware, cookware, small appliances, kitchen tools and utensils.

In the family room you’ll enjoy comfortable reclining furniture and a 55" flat screen TV.

The Master Bedroom offers a king size log bed, chest of drawers, 42" flat screen TV, and sliding glass doors that give access to a private deck with comfy cozy seating for two. You'll access the large Bathroom Suite through sliding double barn doors. The luxury bath provides a granite vanity with double sinks, an oversized soaking tub with large windows that provide a view to the back woods, a 4' x 5' tile walk-in shower and a private water closet.

The Guest Bedroom Suite offers a Queen Size Bed and a Full Bathroom. We call the Guest Suite the 'Stump Room' as the bedside tables are authentic heavy, solid red pine tree stumps, finished and crafted by a talented young Amish gentleman who created most of our other furniture and cabinetry. The vessel sink in the Guest Bath rests on a tree stump. To be completely transparent, the Guest Suite finished out smaller than anticipated, but it's still comfortable and bright with large windows, a sloped ceiling, a full bath and a roomy closet.

The Bunk Room offers sturdy Full-Over-Full Log Bunks, an ample double dresser with a mirror, a large closet and its own private half bath.

Outdoors, you will enjoy relaxing river views from the expansive front deck. A spacious covered pavilion is equipped with a sound system and provides an additional venue to enjoy the outdoors. Kayaks, firewood, lawn chairs and river chairs are provided for your enjoyment.

Guests often remark that our home doesn't feel like a 'typical rental' and that is because, to us, it is not 'just a rental'. 'Camp Shoop' is our second home. We use it frequently and manage it ourselves. We put forth a great deal of time and effort to maintain and continually improve our home for the mutual benefit of our guests and ourselves.

About our Location…..

Our home rests on approximately one acre of property in Everett, PA along the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River just a few hundred yards down from the Woy Bridge (Mile 69). The private gravel/dirt lane has no through access which favorably limits traffic to property owners and their guests. You'll find about 20 properties along the lane. More specifically, you'll find three houses, cottages, RV's, campers and mobile homes. Most of the properties are well kept.

Guests often ask for more specifics... To answer your questions in advance, you'll find a cottage to our left and a home to our right. To the back you'll find a fairly steep wooded hill. To the front you'll find a large yard, the lane and the river. Yes! You will see and hear the river from the deck and the house. Typically, you can expect an abundance of peace and quiet during the week. Activity generally increases on weekends and holidays.

A trip to Everett for groceries, golf or ice cream is a quick four mile trek. Downtown Bedford, an 11 mile drive, provides many dining options, quaint shopping experiences, historic sites, and the prestigious Omni Bedford Springs Resort.

What to do at the River….

• Kayak. When Mother Nature provides favorable river conditions, you might enjoy a float down the Juniata in one of the six kayaks that we provide for guest use. If river conditions aren't favorable, but you still wish to float, each vessel bears a launch permit for use at nearby Shawnee State. Park. (You will need a vehicle sufficiently equipped to transport the kayaks to a drop point upstream, a pickup point downstream or to Shawnee State Park. Guests(s) assume all responsibility and liability with use of kayaks.)
• Riversit. Beach chairs are provided for our guests to enjoy the sounds and scenery of the river.
• Fish. You'll find Bass, Rock Bass, Sunfish, Carp and Catfish in the river. Conditions will determine what’s biting.
• Bowfish for carp, suckers or catfish.
• Just Relax. Read a book, do a jigsaw puzzle or make yourself comfortable on one of the outdoor swings.
• Build a Campfire. Roast a marshmallow, build a s'more or star gaze on a clear night.
• Bird Watch. Sooooo many birds!

What to do in the Area…..

• Dine Out. There are limited dining options in Everett (4 miles). Breezewood (7 miles) offers options typical of a highway interchange. Downtown Bedford (13 miles) offers non-chain options with inviting surroundings typical of a small historic town.
• Go for Ice Cream. The Igloo in Everett is wonderful! (4 miles).
• Golf. Down River Course in Everett is enjoyable and affordable (4 miles). A more prestigious experience is available at Omni Bedford Springs Resort (15 miles).
• Spa. Omni Bedford Springs Resort (15 miles).
• Antiquing/Craft Shopping/Treasure Hunting. Downtown Bedford (13 miles).
• History. Fort Bedford Museum (13 miles) and/or Old Bedford Village in Bedford (17 miles).
• State Parks. Shawnee State Park in Schellsburg (24 miles). Blue Knob All Seasons Resort in Claysburg (38 miles).
• Flight 93 Memorial, Stoystown (36 miles).
• Fish, Boat, Swim. Raystown Lake in Huntingdon (50 miles).

When to Visit….

The warm days of Summer are ideal to enjoy the great outdoors. Water levels in the Summer are typically low.

The chill of Autumn brings beautiful foliage and is a great time to attend the annual Fall Foliage Festival which occurs annually in downtown Bedford the first two weekends in October.

Winter is desolate, yet delightful and is a lovely time for a quiet romantic getaway or family retreat over the holidays. ( A 4WD vehicle during the winter months is recommended as the lane receives no routine winter maintenance.)

Springtime brings the welcome transition from Winter. Historically, late Spring has been the best time to kayak.

Other...

We manage and maintain our property ourselves. We don't utilize a property management service. You will correspond directly with us! :)

Please feel free to ask question(s) you may have that weren't addressed here. We sincerely want you to be happy and will cheerfully and fully disclose whatever information you require to ensure our home and/or the area is a mutual good fit. :)

We take great pride in our home and make every effort to keep it current, clean and in excellent repair for our mutual enjoyment. We love sharing it with guests and we're super easy to get along with but we do have some limitations and rules of conduct.

-Guest must sign a rental agreement and reveal basic contact information.

-Our home is absolutely smoke free (of any substance including vaping).

-With a nominal pet fee, a maximum of two well behaved non-aggressive adult dogs are welcome when accompanied by responsible owners (pre-approval required).

-We will not provide accommodations for house parties, spring break gatherings, bachelor/bachelorette parties, or similar activities that are likely to cause disruption to the neighbors and damage to our home.

-We are not equipped to host large gatherings such as weddings or reunions.

-The depth and clarity of the river will depend upon the weather that Mother Nature chooses to provide. Depending upon precipitation, or lack thereof, river conditions may or may not be optimal for fishing, kayaking, wading, etc.

-Traditional high speed internet services are not available in our rural location. We utilize a TMobile Hotspot.

-We utilize a Ring doorbell security camera. The outdoor video footage is not shared. It is recorded only for liability reasons and to protect us from guest misrepresentation, unauthorized access and over occupancy.

President's day weekend
Sandy was great to communicate with, she even allowed us an early check-in and a late check out. The house was perfect for our group, with plenty of space for everyone. We cooked multiple meals in the kitchen and had evey tool we needed. Check out was a breeze and things we would have done anyway.

Amazing!
The most amazing place for a wonderful get-away. From the moment you drive up to the property, you can “feel” how special it is. From the perfect outdoor swing to the wonderful deck and view of the water to the marvelous interior. The rooms are beautiful and big and so welcoming, the owners take pride in their home as it shows through in every way. They are also very responsive and helpful in all ways. The entire home is beautiful and should be in a magazine. The property is so well taken care and well stocked. The peace and tranquility of the lake and the comfort of the home are truly spectacular and make you feel like you are home. Thank you for a wonderful and memorable time at your beautiful home. Stay here and you will NOT regret it!

About the host

Hubby and I are retired and living in Mount Holly Springs, Pennsylvania.

Why they chose this property

In 2005 we began to feel 'boxed in' in the lovely sidewalk community that we called home. We yearned for a place to escape with our two young boys, then ages 7 and 10.

Our boys showed early interest in fishing so our criteria was that our escape property had to have water access and be within two hours of home so that we could easily enjoy it on a regular basis. After 2 years of searching when we least expected it, we found our diamond in the rough. It was July 2007. Riverfront properties like ours are rare and often come available only by word of mouth. An older couple had decided to part with their property that had been in their family for many years.

In 2009 the old structures were removed and Camp Shoop was born. The original Camp Shoop was less than 1000 square feet. It was small but warm, comfortable and convenient to home. Ten years later, planning for retirement years at the river, we took the plunge and nearly doubled our size in 2019.

We began sharing our home as a vacation rental in 2014.

What makes this property unique

The unique location of our property offers a bountiful taste of the outdoors with the comforts of home. We have direct water access to the river in front of our home. The house is elevated to comply with the 100 year flood plain.
