Yellowstone Bar B Bunkhouse offers the best of all worlds. It is easily accessible by car yet distanced from highway 89 enough to be completely quiet and serene. It is a peaceful setting with beautiful views of breathtaking mountains and a beautiful native cutthroat trout stream running right through your backyard. Bordering the property to the north and south are wide open grassy pastures which are home to our cow herd whose lineage goes back on this place over a hundred years. You may often see a horse frequent by in the summer. The property has walking or horseback access to the Gallatin National Forest (located only a quarter mile to the east of the house) and the 900,000 acre Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness. This Wilderness abuts the 2.2 million acre Yellowstone National Park. It is a huge expanse of wild land. A quarter mile to the west is the free flowing Yellowstone River. Yellowstone National Park is an extremely scenic ten minute drive away.
The home is spacious and comfortable. It is a 4 bedroom 3 bath home. There is also the Yellowstone Cabin available for your use (May 15 - hard frost (late Sept). It is a one room cabin with a double bed and a half bath. It is originally a cabin from Yellowstone and aside from adding the bathroom, it has been left in its original condition. You pay no extra for it and are free to use it if you wish. It is rustic, but really cute. Guests last summer loved it. The property has a beautiful grass lawn with flower beds and bordered by native vegetation and shade trees. There are two decks. The front deck gets the morning sun and is a spectacular setting to enjoy your morning coffee. The back deck is always shaded by beautiful, large cottonwood trees and overlooks Cedar Creek. There is a one car attached garage for your use.
Wildlife frequents the area often. You may see elk, deer, mountain sheep, coyotes, wolves, raccoons and the ever present entertaining squirrels on the deck. It is a birdwatchers heaven from chickadees and sparrows to eagles, cranes and herons. If you are a winter guest, you may also see buffalo from your living room window.
There are endless activities in the greater Yellowstone area. You could spend a lifetime here and not see and experience all it has to offer. Yellowstone National Park offers gorgeous scenery, geysers, bubbling mud, hot springs, wildlife viewing, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, western cookouts, stagecoach rides, boating, guided fish boats on Lake Yellowstone, and many educational opportunities. Boiling Hot Springs, located between Gardiner and Mammoth,is a hot springs where soaking is permitted. It is a unique experience and definitely worth exploring.
The Greater Yellowstone area offers spectacular whitewater rafting, fishing, guided river trips, horseback riding, camping, park tours, souvenir gift shops, restaurants, bar and grills, swimming, biking, hunting and hiking. Bozeman’s Gallatin Field is located 70 miles away.
There is plenty to do right from your Bar B door as well. Two miles east of the house is the historic OTO dude ranch, Montana’s first dude ranch. This is a beautiful, fairly easy hike up a gravel road to the remnants of the dude ranch. The lodge and cabins have been restored to their original condition and you are free to walk around and in them or picnic on the deck.
Cedar Creek, which runs behind the house is closed to fishing as it is a native spawning stream for Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout. We are, however, only a quarter mile from the Yellowstone River which offers spectacular fishing with plenty of access through fishing accesses and high water lines. The spawning cutthroat in Cedar Creek can be seen from the bridge behind the house during July. There are also rainbow and brown trout in the creek.
This is a super location for hunters to base from as well as a comfortable place to come home to after a long day of hunting. There is hunting within walking distance from the house. There is ample Forest Service land in the area for big game hunting during the archery season or general season. We often hear elk bugling at night from our bedroom windows.

Paradise Found!
Our stay in Gardiner was wonderful! The house was so cozy, homey, and had a very well stocked kitchen. The beds were comfy, and we all loved the old western decor. Host was responsive to an issue we had, which was much appreciated. I would love to come back someday!

Family Time
My husband and I flew to Montana to meet our son and his wife to celebrate our youngest's graduation from the Montana Law Enforcement Academy. The home was everything we could have asked for and more. We loved being so close to the hot springs and Yellowstone. We didn't really need to even go to the park though because there bison right out front, along with deer, elk and rabbits. It was incredible! We loved the firepit and stream, and we enjoyed crossing the bridge to explore. This home is fully stocked. We were able to cook dinner both night we were there. Her father-in-law lives next store and super kind. We share some of our meals with him. There was more than enough room for all 6 of us. Would highly recommend this rental!

Best last minute decision ever
We last minute (literally a week before) booked tickets to visit Yellowstone! Not only was the park amazing but we loved hanging out at our VRBO stay! I think if we were here longer we could have done a whole staycation just here! We should be back in October to stay here again! Might make a yearly pilgrimage to it!

Wildlife
The house was exactly as the pictures showed. There were deer everyday in the yard. Our kids had a great time playing by the creek and using their imagination.

Absolutely perfect!
If you are visiting Yellowstone and plan to stay in the Gardiner area, this is the place. Perfect location, everything you need, plenty of space, and incredible beauty. The beds and pillows were extremely comfortable. Everything we needed was provided and l in working condition. We used a crock pot, the stove, oven, dish washer as well as the washer and dryer, everything was great. The location is great, just a short drive into Gardiner and then on to Yellowstone. Overall this was the perfect place for our trip. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful home.

About the host

Hosted by Wendy Thomas

Host profile image
Len and Barb Thomas purchased this home in 2001. The property sits in the middle of our family ranch which has been in the family for almost fifty years. Len and Barb moved here to be close to grandkids. The grandkids grew up in a very special way with both sets of grandparents less than a quarter mile away and the distance was covered frequently. Barb was completely taken with the Cowboy and Native American way of life. Collecting old western artifacts, antiques and curios was her hobby and her method of decorating her home. We hope you enjoy them as much as she did. We celebrated many holidays and birthdays in this home and are excited to share with you the joy it has brought to our family.

Why they chose this property

Grandkids and Gorgeous Big Sky Country. This country is unique and has a special way of getting in your blood. This home sits in the middle of our family ranch surrounded by lush pastures, grazing cows and horses and the footsteps of many grandchildren. It is peaceful and rural. The neighbors are the very best. Sightseeing is amazing, wildlife is abundant and fishing is fantastic. The vistas are forever changing with the time of day and the seasons. We are able to enjoy the beautiful Yellowstone scenery from our picture window without the Yellowstone hustle and bustle.

What makes this property unique

We bought this home because we loved the area and all it offered. Hunting, fishing, sightseeing, rafting, and it just happened to be right where we wanted it; directly in the middle of the family ranch. It was a unique location with a house we liked. We have added many features that have made that house our home. We have put work into creating a beautiful lawn, built decks, added old Yellowstone outbuildings for atmosphere, resided the building, added a stone fireplace mantle and of course added all those Western Americana and Native American decorative touches. We are excited for you to experience what made us fall in love with this place. Please come and enjoy our home. Nothing could give us more pleasure.
