About this property

Wide And Endless Views From A Private Hilltop In The Flint Hills

Settled far out in the Tallgrass Prairie of the rolling Flint Hills, with wide and endless views in all directions from a private hilltop, the True Prairie Home stands up to its name. In all seasons the house is surrounded by the magnificent and unique sea of grass. More than half of the year, the grasslands present the black dots of roaming cattle, everywhere. In late March / early April, the winter grasses are burned, with the prairie fires and their black earth aftermath a sight to see—the more so when knowing the young grasses will sprout up immediately after and color the rejuvenated prairie in fabulous greens. From the house, the prairie opens up a large pasture to hikers, painters, photographers, and dreamers. On all four sides the house has inviting porches for lazy gazing, reading and, again, for dreaming away…
All rooms in the True Prairie Home, which was custom built by local craftsmen from native limestone blocks, have huge windows which frame the natural art of the prairie. Handmade walnut doors, cabinets, floors, and staircase, complement the extensive interior stonework. The ample wall space and soaring ceilings provide a backdrop for the truly great, original art collected by the owners. The style presents a tasteful blend of the old days with contemporary design. On the first floor the living area is centered around a beautiful twenty foot stone wall and fireplace; the kitchen is fully equipped with tasteful materials and modern appliances; and the rustic dining table seats eight. The master bedroom features an interior stone wall, a large adjoining bath, and French doors opening to the expansive porch. On the second floor, you will find another large bedroom, bath, and a spacious den; complete with Western art and a queen size leather sleeper sofa.
And everywhere you look, the setting will take your breath away and stay in your soul…

Why they chose this property

We first came to the Flint Hills about 20 years ago and, like most people, we were immediately mesmerized by it. Although we lived in Kansas City, we found we were being constantly drawn back to the prairie and Cottonwood Falls. After several years of weekend trips here, we realized we definitely needed a more permanent place in the Flint Hills to live. That realization began a long search lasting several years for an historic stone house to renovate. When this search did not result in any possibilities we decided to find the perfect site for its view of the land and build a home - but to construct it with an old stone exterior. We purchased an old stone barn for its beautiful stone and in 2006 the project began. Today we have our perfect getaway home for long or short stays, enjoyed by just ourselves or our friends, or by our five children and their friends. We have already enjoyed a family Thanksgiving here, celebrating with over 30 family members. Also, we have had one wonderful wedding here with the guests dancing far into the warm, star-filled summer night. Visitors have never forgotten their time here as it makes an indelible mark on their souls. Many have returned again and again for the raw beauty of the vistas in every direction, the serene quiet, and, of course, the spectacular sunsets.
