About this property
Enjoy the quiet side of the Door County peninsula, 190' of Lake Michigan shore
Enjoy both sunrise and sunset from our private pier. Comfortable, rustic 2 bedrooms, living room, dining room, one full bath, well equipped kitchen, electric heat, fully carpeted. Sleeps 6. Wood-burning stove. The Haven is located at 1499 Goodnow Rd, Baileys Harbor, WI
Unwind, decompress, unplug, and reconnect with friends or family and the quiet sounds of nature. Great area for biking, swimming, kayak/canoeing, hiking, and fishing. Functional cell phone service (AT&T LTE/4G good, Verizon generally better). No broadcast TV or cable. We do have a flat screen TV with DVD/VCR unit, many movies, and HDMI input. Parking available for three cars. While we have hosted up to 8 (2 on pull-out sofa bed in living room), it is more comfortable for 6. Baileys Harbor quiet hours are 10pm to 8am.
Please be aware that this is a rustic cabin. There is no landline phone, no cable, no satellite dish, or WiFi, and no air conditioning, no dishwasher. The idea behind the Haven is to simplify with a game of horseshoes, enjoy the hammock, relax with a good book, movie or board-game. The Haven is well situated less than a mile from dining at Gordon's Lodge or six miles from shopping in either Baileys Harbor, Ephraim, or Sister Bay.
Available late May through October: Please bring own bed linens and towels. We furnish pillows and blankets. NOTICE: we have our pier taken in for the off-season. Due to damaging storms that seem to be occurring earlier each year, the pier may not be in until June and out as early as early-September. Please inquire about the availability of the pier when renting in September and October. We do have a permanent deck overlooking North Bay about six feet above the water that is available all season.
We prefer that reservations and payments be made online through VRBO. Contact the owners (Sam and Janet Batzli) with questions or rental requests at:

About the host
Hosted by Sam and Janet Batzli (owners)
Janet and Sam live in Madison, Wisconsin. Janet's family has deep ties to Door County dating back to the 1800s. We feel so fortunate to be able to spend time at The Haven and to be able to share it with visitors from around the world.
Why they chose this property
The south shore of North Bay is a very special place. Ecologically it is considered a boreal forest because of its mix of conifers, deciduous trees, lichens and mosses, which are more commonly found north of Lake Superior in Canada. The lake shore provides a cooling effect in the summers that permits these species to grow far south of their common range. The Lake Michigan-side of the peninsula is typically 5-10 degrees cooler than the middle or the Green Bay-side of the peninsula. You may even need a sweatshirt on July evenings.
You will quickly discover why this is called 'the quiet side' of the Door County Peninsula. The main attraction of North Bay is its natural beauty, fresh air, and peacefulness. Much of the North Bay area has been designated a protected natural area. The Nature Conservancy, the DNR, and the Door County Land Trust have worked together to preserve the natural splendor. The most recent addition is Walt's Woods which adjoins The Haven property, and its trail head can be found at the top of our drive way. Visit http://www.doorcountylandtrust.org/ for more info about area natural areas.
What makes this property unique
There are so many fun things to do in Door County and staying at The Haven is a great way to have access without being in the middle of the crowd. These are some of our family's favorite activities and destinations over the years. Please check ahead to see if these options are still available. We are not always able to keep these up-to-date:
1) Biking -- Door County offers some of the nicest biking roads in the state. 2) Eagle Tower – spectacular tower with ramp and view of Eagle Harbor 3) Peninsula State Park -- great beaches, mountain biking, hiking (try Eagle Trail if you are a strong hiker), and golf -- only 15-minutes away. 4) Washington Island/Rock Island -- get an early start, take the ferry from North Port, consider taking bikes for the island. Good summertime food (ice cream and burgers) at the Albatross, rocky shores of School House Beach, hop on another short ferry to the historic Rock Island. 5) Peninsula Players -- get there early to enjoy the sunset before showtime 6) Jumping off the pier in Sister Bay -- the water is almost always warmer over there ;-) 7) Cave Point County Park -- on a windy day the waves can act like geysers 8) Cherry picking -- everywhere when in season, or go to Koepsels on HWY 57 (9669 Hwy. 57 Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, Phone: (920) 854-2433) and buy a cherry pie 9) Nature walk at The Ridges Sanctuary -- walk the board walks but don't forget the mosquito repellent 10) Mini golf at Pirates Cove, a movie at the Skyway Drive-In, bowling at the Sister Bay Bowl, or craft beer at the Door County Brewing Tap House. Also, Bier Zot/Wild Tomato Pizza in Sister Bay.
All of these things (except maybe Washington Island) are a short drive or long bike ride from The Haven.
