A renovated 3-bedroom apartment in an 18th century building. Thick, original walls and exposed wood make this apartment a truly unique place to stay for your family or group of friends. One of its most interesting characteristics is the extended space provided by the lovely mezzanine that overlooks the comfortable and attractive sitting room with a unique “salamandra”, a typical iron heating device from old times (no longer in use, though). Comfort and character are the distinctive features of this apartment. It’s also next door to beautiful national monuments, antique shops and great restaurants where you can listen to Portugal’s traditional song, Fado, which has been part of UNESCOS’s intangible heritage since 2011.
DESCRIPTION This unique ground-floor apartment combines an ancient structure with modern interiors and equipment. Original tiles, exposed stone walls, an original wooden front door and an 18th century wooden frame, the so-called “Pombaline cage”, form the ancient structure (which has been preserved in its entirety). The modern interiors are refined, in tones of wood, beige, yellow and orange, and include a mezzanine (only 1.75 m high) with an extra bedroom, a sofa bed and a working area. The bedrooms are cozy with very comfortable beds, but no windows, a common feature of buildings dating from the 18th century. But there is an excellent ventilation system, so no need to worry! Actually, the temperature inside the apartment always remains pleasantly stable as the apartment’s walls are original and extremely thick. As for the kitchen, you’ll love it! With its stone walls, original tiles and wooden table it’s like an old farmhouse kitchen!
NEIGHBORHOOD Historical Alfama dates back to the time of Arab occupation (ca. 8th, 9th century AD), which is probably why it is packed with so many Fado venues, as the traditional Portuguese song is supposed to have been influenced by the Arab culture. Quite typical and not at all uncommon is to listen to Fado amateurs singing their hearts out from the inside of their own homes! This charming quarter is also jammed with centuries old monuments, quaint grocery stores, charming shops, a flea market and labyrinthine alleys. On foot, you can reach most of old, historical Lisbon. . On your way, you will also come across grocers, shoemakers and other artisans who have been selling their products for over 40 years! This is real, genuine Lisbon, with which most visitors fall in love at first glance. You can also marvel, day in day out, at the glistening Tagus river from Alfama’s highest spots. The Fado Museum is another of Alfama’s highlights.
The apartment’s quiet alley is walking distance from some of Lisbon’s “relics”: 5 min to the Fado Museum, Panteão Nacional (where the Portuguese royal family and prestigious Portuguese are buried) and São Vicente de Fora convent; 10 min to São Jorge Castle or the Se Cathedral;15 min from one of the world’s most beautiful square, Praça do Comércio, and the elegant downtown buildings; a little further away, are the aristocratic Chiado and the alternative Bairro Alto with a trendy nightlife. Of course, you will also have to explore Belém – the Museum quarter. So please take a bus or a tram and spend some time there. Loads to see in Belém!
Nearby, less than a 5 min walk, runs the ultra-famous 28 tram line which crosses some of the best historical quarters, as well as Santa Apolónia metro and train station which links Lisbon to the whole country. The metro network reaches a good part of Lisbon. Metro and buses can also take you to Cais do Sodré train station which serves the beautiful Cascais and Estoril summer resorts, or to Rossio train station from where you can reach Lord Byron’s beloved village of Sintra.

Perfectly located to so many sights, restaurants and shopping. Located in an old section of Lisboa. Easy to get around. Place has old world charm but be aware, some bedrooms have no windows and top floor has very low ceilings. My 2 adult sons would hit their heads easily. We nevertheless enjoyed our stay! Thank you.
The host who met us was very nice and informative about the apartment and areas to visit. The place was near to many shops, restaurants and places to see. It is a quiet area. It could use a couple small windows in the rooms for better airflow. A suggestion is maybe take a humidifier. Fans are available which were a big help. The dryer is not what know as a dryer in the states but it worked.
Our stay here was perfect. The apartment is rustic and beautiful, giving the charm of old town Alfama. It was plenty spacious for our family as well. The location is perfect, near plenty of restaurants and walking distance to many sights. Would definitely stay here again.
Prior to our trip all of our questions were answered quickly and transportation from the airport was arranged in advance - a huge help to a group of 9 after an overnight flight! Carlos greeted us at the place for check-in and gave us an overview of the place and the area. We were in historic Alfama, giving us easy access to restaurants and transportation. We had a fabulous time and enjoyed the sleep accomodations for all. We would come here again.
This place is amazing! It is roomy and has so much charm, from the stone walls to the tiles. We appreciated having 3 bathrooms (with four women) and when it got hot, we just opened the windows and enjoyed the fresh air. I also loved having codes versus physical keys and the building was very safe/secure. Alfama is the best neighborhood and this is a great location within the neighborhood. Shops and restaurants and small markets were just around the corner and we ate dinner at local restaurants every night. Nuno checked us in and was so lovely, he gave us lots of recommendations and even sent me a follow up message on WhatsApp with more recommendations for food and shopping. I would stay here again and would recommend it!
My family had a wonderful week in Lisbon. The apartments was in a great location. The place had enough space for our family with 4 teenage kids.

The location of Travessa I is incredible. Alfama was our favorite neighborhood within Lisbon. There were incredible restaurants within easy walking distance, good access to public transportation (the blue line Metro) and great sites to see nearby. When you stay in a such a great location in a major metro area, we understand that you may have to accept some trade-offs, but we were disappointed in the apartment overall. The biggest issue was that it smelled musty, like mildew or mold. While Paula was very responsive and had an air purifier brought in, it only partially mitigated the issue.Maybe we didn't read the reviews well initially, but as a note to those over 5'6" in height, the upstairs is very difficult to manage. I'm 6'-0", and my head would hit the ceiling if I stood up straight. There were several lower hanging beams, and while they are well marked, they are still treacherous. Both my wife and I hit our heads (whether it was dark at night or we were groggy in the morning). I'd also note that the furniture, including beds, were very uncomfortable and felt cheap. On that front, it seems like they did the bare minimum to turn this into a short-term rental. On the bright side, Paula was very responsive and accommodating, which is always much appreciated.Overall, I'd just say be aware of the trade-offs if considering this apartment.
Beautiful and comfortable apartment in a great location! Easy to walk to various places or catch the hop on hop off bus. Lots of local places to eat very close to the apartment. The owners are friendly and so accommodating! Thank you for a lovely stay!!
Great location! Wonderful greeting from Carlos when we arrived!
We were very happy with our stay. We were fortunate enough to be able to check in early due to our early arrival. Carlos gave us some wonderful recommendations, especially his place for seafood! We had rainy weather, but having the washer, drying rack, and wonderful working heaters made our stay very enjoyable. The apartment had a lot of charm and was very unique. We would stay there again! Thanks for the great time!
One of the most unique places I've ever stayed, in one of the best areas of the city. I couldn't recommend this place enough. The we comfortable slept eight guests, but the place could accommodate more. Just a street away there are shops, restaraunts, bars, and more, but it still if far enough removed to be peaceful and serene. We made friends with several of the business owners nearby and listened to plenty of Fado. Would 100% stay again.
Staying in the oldest part of the city has it’s perks: quaint local bakery, close to Santa Appallonia train /metro station and the delicious Italian Nona restaurant just outside. Corresponding with Property Managers is easy with text/what’s app and they leave a property book for check out procedures to make an early flight out of town. Appliances and decor a bit dated for 6 adults (4 of which have allergies). We enjoyed putting in our daily 10,000 steps walking the beautiful hills of Lisbon
Great location, old town feel with all the upsides and downsides
Staying in Alfalma was great- access to everything. We did a day long bike ride with tour which was a highlight. The residence was very authentic- amazing design and architecture albeit a little small in terms of headroom for our American physiques- with 5 men at least 6 feet tall, the upstairs room and bathrooms are very tight. There was also a musty smell which I am sensitive to. Otherwise, the check on and response of the owners was excellent!
Advertised for up to 10. We were 7 and it was really tight. The upstairs has very difficult access and we were asked to leave it very clean which we did. If rent is that expensive in Lisbon, I would vacation elsewhere next time.
We were a group of 4 adults. Loved the idea of having a comfortable home atmosphere in a historic home. This filled all the squares. We were able to walk immediately into the old area for restaurants and entertainment. Several grocery stores were literally around the corner. Paula was kind enough to get us in early as our flight arrived early morning. Huge help. Would strongly recommend this spot.
Apartment has so much charm and character. Everything you need is there, including a washer and clothes drying rack!. And the location is ideal for getting around the city. However it is slightly challenging to get luggage into and up the street.
Keep in mind that the bedroom on second level has a low ceiling difficult if you are over 5’8. And the bathroom is tiny. But for a inner city apartment that is as old as it is it’s amazing to have 3 toilets! We really enjoyed our stay. And so will you.

Dear Nicole,
Thank you for your kind words! So good that you enjoyed your stay with us. We love have you a guest as well:)
We do hope to have the opportunity to host you again in one of our properties.
kind regards

I’ll start with the pros: this is an exceedingly historic and charming property in a great location on a quiet alley/cul de sac. The showers are self contained, so no drainage issues. Cons: You have to meet someone to be let in which is a little stressful. The upstairs says it is 1.75m, however, this is not entirely accurate as the floor height varies, and all of the doorways are considerable shorter. This may work for very short people or children but this was NOT at all ideal for our crew, who sustained 2 minor concussions and a stubbed toe. Upstairs 1/2 toilet was not possible to use in a regular position, as the front of the toilet is too close to the wall. No windows. All in all, unfortunately, we would not stay here again, or recommend it to anyone else.
Beautiful historic property in the heart of Alfama
We really enjoyed our stay here. This location is ideal, within easy walking distance of several key attractions and many great restaurants. It is located on a short street with no outlet, so there is little foot traffic and no automobile traffic (except fo residents parking). The house is comfortably decorated. We arrived in the evening, and due to unforeseen events our check in process was different than we were expecting (our contact was detained and had to send us the codes to get into the building and meet us later). That said, he was very friendly and knowledgeable of the area and provided us with some great information. Similarly, the hosts have put together a comprehensive guide to their home (how to use everything within) and the area (suggested restaurants, public transport, etc etc) which we found very helpful. I've seen some reviews talking about the smell from the sewers coming up from the toilets (I saw this not just in reviews of this property, but others in Alfama). There is a bit of a sewer smell that wafts from time to time, but it was not a big deal. We found that keeping the lid down on the toilet was all we needed to do, and it was a small price to pay for staying in this really cool area. One thing to keep in mind about this property is that the upstairs ceiling is really low (probably about 5' 9"). This is mentioned by the homeowner and was not an issue for us. The only thing I would improve would be thicker mattresses, but even that was not an issue
Logement tres propre. Tres bon accueil.
