Cozy 1 BR Cottage 2 Block Stroll to Sonoma Plaza.

Enter a private, secluded environment and get away from the busy world in this charming, old-fashioned cottage with many Irish touches -- but also with wireless internet connection and flat-screen cable HD TV with hundreds of channels. Enjoy the easy two-block stroll to Sonoma Plaza, where you can choose from Sonoma's best restaurants, wine tasting rooms, and gift shops, also Mission St. Francis Solano, the last and northernmost mission of the California Mission Trail. The cottage is a wonderful base for taking walks to the historic Plaza, coffeeshops, wine bars and nearby vineyards.

The traditionally furnished living room has a cozy, natural gas fireplace and sofa bed for additional guests for no extra charge. Our fully stocked kitchen has everything you need for preparing meals. The small room off the living room can be an office or nursery. The screened-in front porch is perfect for reading, and/or enjoying a glass of Sonoma Chardonnay. In September 2021 we built a redwood deck off the bedroom for outdoor relaxing or dining, and friendly deer are often, daily actually, sighted in the backyard pasture (they love apple cores).

My wife Rose and I opened the doors of Kate Murphy’s Cottage in 1984. We have thoroughly enjoyed meeting guests from around the world and playing a part in their visit to the beautiful Sonoma Valley. It has been a singularly rewarding experience. And now, I am welcoming my son-in-law, Rick Alatorre, to the endeavor. Rick will be your contact and is looking forward to facilitating a wonderful stay for you at Kate Murphy’s. Rick and I together will ensure that your time in Sonoma is relaxing and enjoyable.

Available at discount by the week, two weeks, three weeks or month, the cottage is ideal for anniversary celebrations, house hunting, visiting family and friends, or extended business trips. We have a three-day minimum stay policy.

We have instituted the following protocols to further ensure the health and safety of all our guests. Our staff and cleaning crew are fully vaccinated against the COVID pandemic. We require that anyone who enters the cottage for maintenance or upkeep or cleaning be fully vaccinated.

The location was the best! The hosts were great - although we never got a chance to say hello. The cottage was great and the location made for easy walking to dinner and town area. We enjoyed the stay very much.

Wine country getaway

This was our second time staying here and it was great both times. Walking distance to downtown Sonoma and many wine tasting rooms. The cottage is great and the owners are friendly and helpful. We even sat on the porch with them and drank wine our last night there. We look forward to returning, hopefully in the next couple of years!

Cute cottage close to everything

We loved our stay, the hosts were very helpful and the location was perfect for a Sonoma visit. We LOVED the fact that we got to see a mama deer and her 2 fawns in the backyard every morning. The host was attentive and let us know before arriving they were working on landscaping the property but it had no affect on our stay. It was very quiet yet close to everything. We can't wait to visit again!

Excellent location walking distance to the Square

This is our second time visiting the Sonoma cottage. It is perfect for two friends and the back Garden is lovely for morning coffee and evening wine. The cottages, old and quirky, but very inviting and very comfortable. We had a wonderful time

A true gem!

My 3-year-old and I were visiting Sonoma for a few days and landed at Kate Murphy’s Cottage. It’s well stocked, has real rustic charm, and is close to absolutely everything in Sonoma. We loved seeing our little visitors (see picture) in the mornings. We’d certainly stay again. One note that might matter to some who go to bed later than their travel partner: there’s no bedroom door. It wasn’t an issue for me, as I enjoyed quiet evenings and mornings on the screened-in porch.

The cottage and grounds are delightful. We stay there when we visit relatives in Sonoma. The cottage is completely comfortable, and we love to relax there and watch the many deer who visit the property. Books, magazines, and reading material are abundant. The smart TV has cable and it is easy to stream. The furniture and beds are inviting. We cook in the kitchen, which is perfectly equipped.The host and family take care of everything within minutes. All this and a 5-10 minute walk to the Sonoma square and its many delights. If you like to swim, Sonoma Splash pools are less than 1/2 mile away. This is our Sonoma home.

Great rental

The cottage is very clean and charming. It’s in a lovely neighborhood. Nice outdoor and indoor sitting spaces. Walking distance to Sonoma plaza. Larry is friendly and available if needed. Best place we’ve stayed in!

Cute Cottage and Great Location

We had a lovely stay at the cottage. Cozy and comfortable for the two of us. Very walkable to the plaza and all the restaurants and shops. Check in could not be easier and Larry left great notes and suggestions. Deer showing up every evening to play in the back yard is not to be missed.

Sister weekend

Just what we needed for a short but sweet weekend. Be sure to use the foam for the fold out as it made a big difference. Owner is gracious, kind, and very easy to work with.

Home Away From Home

I had a fantastic time. This wonderful abode is within approximately 2 miles from downtown Sonoma. Therefore, it is an ideal location for tasting rooms, vineyard travel tour(s), downtown Napa (less than 25 minutes), Muir Woods (45 minutes), and even the Golden Gate Bridge (60-75 minutes).

Cozy, Comfortable Cottage

We felt part of historic Sonoma because of the wonderful momentos in the cottage. Everything in the cottage: beds, chairs, lighting, kitchen, porch, deck was comfortable, cozy, and homey. The deer in the back yard were a special treat. We did not need a car. It was an easy walk to the Plaza, town wineries, the bagel shop and Whole Foods. We visit Sonoma often; we hope Kate's cottage is always available.

Charming, comfortable, and quiet retreat

We could not have enjoyed our stay more. Like staying at in a relative's house, except with an extremely comfortable bed! So many rentals these days are cold and generic - not this one. We felt completely at home and especially loved sitting in the adirondack chairs in the yard, watching a baby deer. Location is a perfect launching pad for exploring between Sonoma and Napa, and it's so nice to be able to walk into Sonoma square. Loved reading the guest book entries of people who have stayed in the cottage for over a decade! This will be our top pick whenever we return to the area.

Comfy cottage in perfect location.

My daughter and I stayed at Kate Murphy's cottage for a long weekend while enjoying Sonoma. It was the perfect home base for our trip. The cottage was clean, comfortable and we felt right at home. Check-in was super easy and Larry introduced himself as we arrived. The bed was extremely comfortable, slept great every night. The best thing about the cottage is the location! It's just a couple blocks from the square so we easily walked to dinner, shopping, coffee, park, wine tastings. And when exhausted from our busy days, we spent the evenings relaxing on the deck watching the deer come up and eat in the meadow. We would definitely stay again!

Perfect Sonoma Cottage

We loved our time spent at the cottage and would absolutely stay again the next time we visit Sonoma. The cottage was just as described, it is cute, quaint, and charming. Larry is an amazing host and we truly enjoyed chatting with him when checking in and learning about the history of the cottage. The location can’t be beat, we easily walked to Sonoma Plaza every day. The cottage is older but has everything needed for a several night stay. The kitchen was stocked enough that we were able to make breakfast each morning. The gas fireplace kept the entire cottage cozy. We would recommend to all our friends!

Perfect location

Great location- couldn’t be better for walking around Sonoma! Larry was friendly and made everything very easy. The sofa bed isn’t comfortable but the sofa itself is, so I slept on it without pulling it out. Place is a little musty and dated, which is charming but the bathroom could use updating- has some mold around the shower and doesn’t feel sparkly clean. The deer in the backyard were incredibly charming, mama and two babies, and Dutch bros coffee was amazing across the street

Lovely Get Away

The location couldn't have been any better! My husband and I stayed at Kate Murphy's cottage for a long anniversary weekend get-away to Sonoma. Larry immediately greeted us upon arrival to make sure we had everything we needed. We had a nice covered place to park our car and didn't even need to use the car for the first couple of days. We were able to walk and ride bikes everywhere we wanted to go. The bed was extremely comfortable, the kitchen well appropriated. We walked to Whole Foods to get breakfast supplies and anything else we needed. We will definitely return to Kate Murphy's Cottage on our next trip to Sonoma.

Perfect for two

This little quirky little cottage is the perfect place to stay when exploring Sonoma. It’s an easy walk to the square, has off street parking and is in a quiet neighborhood. The hosts were so nice and made sure we had all the information in advance of our arrival so check in was easy. Would highly recommend for a couple looking for a place to stay for a wine weekend.

Rose and Larry Murphy, both retired teachers, are long-time Sonoma residents, moved here from San Francisco with our 3 kids in 1975. Rose taught Irish and English literature classes at Santa Rosa JC, and was also tasting Room Manager at Buena Vista winery in the late 70s. Larry taught High School art, and served as Mayor of Sonoma in 1988 and 1992. In 1984 they established Kate Murphy's Cottage. After several trips to Ireland they founded the popular local Murphy's Irish Pub on the Plaza in 1993. They have traveled extensively in Ireland and have provided many Irish touches in the cottage. Murphy's Pub still offers the best pint of Guinness and fish and chips in Sonoma County.

Why they chose this property

The cottage is on our property, completely separate and private. We have owned the cottage since purchasing the property in 1975. The traditional East Side of Sonoma has beautiful old growth oak trees, conifers, colorful fall foliage, countless other landscaping delights, and graceful older homes most of which have protective historic zoning (including ours), it is indeed a treat to stroll through our neighborhood.

What makes this property unique

Unique benefits: the cottage is accessible by foot to historic Sonoma Plaza, downtown shops and restaurants and wine tasting rooms and historic St. Francis Solano Mission, the northernmost and last of the California Mission Trail. There are vineyards within 4 blocks, coffee shops, bakeries, all within a ten minute walk from the cottage front door.
