This charming, old-fashioned cottage with many Irish touches provides a cozy retreat—complete with wireless internet connection and flat-screen cable HD TV—where you can instantly kick back, unlace your shoes, and feel right at home.

Best of all, you are just an easy two-block stroll from the heart of historic Sonoma Plaza. Walk to your favorite morning coffee spot, explore local wine tasting rooms and casual eateries, or wander past Mission San Francisco Solano, all without ever needing to worry about parking.

At Kate Murphy's Cottage, you'll find everyday comforts & relaxed outdoor living:

Natural Grounds & Wildlife: A peaceful creek borders the property, where we are currently enhancing the grounds with water-wise California native and Mediterranean plants. The adjacent pasture brings daily visits from friendly local deer.

Porch & Redwood Deck: Settle onto the screened-in front porch with a good book and a glass of local Chardonnay, or step out onto the redwood deck off the bedroom.

Cozy Living Room: Warm up by the natural gas fireplace after a day out. Includes period-style furnishings and a sofa bed for extra guests at no extra charge.

Fully Stocked Kitchen: Cook favorite meals with ease—outfitted with everything you need for casual breakfasts or home-cooked dinners.

Bonus Room: A small, versatile space off the living area, perfect as a quiet work nook or nursery.

Our Family Story & Your Hosts: Established by Larry and Rose Murphy in 1984, Kate Murphy's Cottage is now lovingly owned and operated by their daughter, Monica, and her husband, Rick Alatorre. Monica and Rick are proud to carry on the family tradition of genuine Sonoma hospitality.

Rick is your primary host and loves connecting with guests from all over the world. Highly communicative and easily accessible throughout your stay, Rick enjoys helping all our guests settle in and find local destinations. Both Rick and Monica want to make sure that your visit is as smooth and welcoming as possible.

Stay Details: A wonderful base for anniversary getaways, remote work, or extended visits with family and friends. We have a 3-night minimum stay policy, with discounts available for stays longer than 7 nights.

This little cottage was perfect for our wine country adventures. Rick is a great host and full of local information. You can’t beat the location, just a couple blocks from Sonoma plaza. We were able to walk to some great restaurants, shops, and grocery stores. I’d stay here again if I’m back in the area!

Perfect for two

This little quirky little cottage is the perfect place to stay when exploring Sonoma. It’s an easy walk to the square, has off street parking and is in a quiet neighborhood. The hosts were so nice and made sure we had all the information in advance of our arrival so check in was easy. Would highly recommend for a couple looking for a place to stay for a wine weekend.

Kate Murphy’s Cottage was established in 1984 by Larry and Rose Murphy, long-time Sonoma residents and retired educators who moved here from San Francisco in 1975. Active leaders in the community, Rose taught literature and managed the tasting room at Buena Vista Winery, while Larry taught high school art and served as Mayor of Sonoma in the late 80s and early 90s.

Inspired by their extensive travels to Ireland, Larry and Rose filled the cottage with authentic Irish touches—and in the early days, Rose even baked fresh Irish soda bread for guests to enjoy every morning. In 1993, they went on to found Murphy’s Irish Pub right on Sonoma Plaza, which remains a favorite watering hole today for the best pint of Guinness and fish and chips in the county. Today, their daughter Monica and her husband Rick are proud to carry on Larry and Rose’s legacy of warm, personal hospitality and deep community roots.

Why they chose this property

The cottage is on our property, completely separate and private. We have owned the cottage since purchasing the property in 1975. The traditional East Side of Sonoma has beautiful old growth oak trees, conifers, colorful fall foliage, countless other landscaping delights, and graceful older homes most of which have protective historic zoning (including ours), it is indeed a treat to stroll through our neighborhood.

What makes this property unique

Unique benefits: the cottage is accessible by foot to historic Sonoma Plaza, downtown shops and restaurants and wine tasting rooms and historic St. Francis Solano Mission, the northernmost and last of the California Mission Trail. There are vineyards within 4 blocks, coffee shops, bakeries, all within a ten minute walk from the cottage front door.
